COHEN" Although imitation is sup pose! to be the sincerest form of flattery, it can make for troubled Theater. That's whv Mr. John Beal and Miss Carol Stone are wise in playing ine Jrour-poster" their own way instead of trying to parrot Mr. Hume Cronyn and Miss Jessica Tandy, who acted Mr. Jan DeHartog's two-character family album here so successfully last season.

Being married, the Cronyns were entitled to liberties and took them. Mr. Beal and Miss Stone have to tread lighter and more sottiv. But their blue print is good, too. and it works.

The theatrical stuat still comes off. Nobody else appears on the stage all evening, you know, and yet 35 vears in the married ife of Michael and Agnes are clearly, humorously and sometimes touchinglv stated. Onlv gifted people can put a couple of exclusive hours to entertain- use, and Mr. Beal and Miss Stone are gifted people. Some of the Cronyns' in candescent subtleties and performing unity may be missing, but their successors have sub stituted an instant personal recognition.

The occasional shrew that Miss Stone makes of Agnes and the storming dunderhead which filters into Mr. Beal's Michael are im pressively human. On the other side of the footlights, the nods are likely to become in creasingly knowing as the eve ning grows. For Mr. Beal and Miss Stone are not wearing their wedding rings in story-book fashion.

They press the gentle humors ever so tenderly but thev also show their claws and their teeth when the domestic storm signals are up. The rhythms of this performance must be quickly acknowledged where-ever a man and a woman live together under the same roof. Even at second glance, "The Fourposter" has the fragrance of a forget-me-not. While Mr. DeHartog's tale of marriage is quite commonplace, he has put an illustrator's brush to the iamnar crises oi an FROM HOME" Tech.

To accomplish this, the acting has to be Mr. Beal and Miss Stone are reassuring the moment the-' enter their 1890 bedroom, and three acts and 35 years later, they have wrapped an affectionate haze around "The Fourposter." Miss Stone's style isn't as soft as Miss Tandy's, but her wifely attitudes are straight to the point, and Mr. Beal's Michael strikes a neat balance between petulance and pompousness. Against Miss Stone's droll lovableness and womanly sympathy, Mr. Beal's husband whom she knows forward and backwards, is terribly amusing.

Don't let the bargain prices at the Nixon fool you. For the excellent production of "The Fourposter" Mr. Beal and Miss Stone have brought to town and which they are acting so diligently would still be a bargain at considerably more than two dollars.
