B-5 BASEBALL Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Monday, April 20. 1W3 Bucs' Young producing like a veteran. "Actually, I'm disappointed haven't driven in more runs bet cause I've had so many chances out there," Young said. In the fourth, he stepped in against Mark Portugal with King on third. He wanted to hit the ball to the right side, but wound up lacing a single up the middle.

"But, you know, the job got done," Young said. King scored. Houston led just 2-1. In the sixth, Young enticed walk, advanced on Slaught's single and scored on Tom Foley's sacrifice, fly. The Pirates led 5-2.

In the eighth, he lined a Brian Williams pitch into center field, where Rick Parker made a diving catch but came nowhere close to throwing out Merced at home. The Pirates led 7-2. "He robbed me of a hit; I was a little upset," Young said, smiling. Still, the run scored. His duty was complete.

He plays first base mostly, third base some. He bats sixth, in a run-producing position, behind Orlando Merced and ahead of Slaught. He bears far more of an offensive burden than fellow rookies Al Martin and Carlos Garcia. All this, and Young ranks second among Pirates regulars in RBIs (13) and home runs (1) and fourth in batting average Nice job, rook? "Pretty good," Young allowed. Officially, he went l-for-2 against three Houston pitchers.

He erased Merced with a fielder's choice in the second; singled in Jeff King in the fifth; walked and scored in the sixth; lined out to center field to score Merced in the eighth. Oh, and he fielded all 11 chances at first. "Under the pressure they've thrown at us, I think I've done pretty good." Young is 6 feet 2, 213 pounds. He was drafted from Southern Missis sippi in the seventh round of the 1990 draft. He batted .314 and was the American Association's rookie of the year last season.

He had four RBIs. two walks and a .571 average in just seven at-bats and 22 days with the Pirates last summer. "You could see early the man's got talent," Slaught said. "You're not going to hide that talent from anybody. Still, there's pressure to produce, and he's done that." On opening night, he collected four RBIs, a double and scored a run.

By the third game, he owned eight RBIs and a .307 average. You could say he went into a tailspin thereafter, driving in just one run the next 10 games. But he still hit .272 in that span. Look at him lately. In the past four games, Young has four RBIs and three walks.

He has increased his batting average to .291 with runners in scoring position. By Chuck Finder Post-Gazette Sports Writer Yesterday was no different to Kevin Young. He reported to work. He earned his major-league minimum wage. He batted in two runs.

Scored a run. Got a hit. Got a walk. Cleanly fielded his base. Just another day on the job.

No. 42, to be exact. "It's a tough situation," catcher Don Slaught said yesterday afternoon, after the rookie batting in front of him significantly prodded the Pirates to a 7-2 victory over Houston at Three Rivers Stadium. "They put a whole lot of pressure on him. 'There you He's playing every day.

He's been put in an RBI spot from the get-go. "And he's done an outstanding job for us." That word is associated freely with the 23-year-old Young job. 11,1 MAJOR LEAGUE STANDINGS NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST DIVISION Pet GB L10 Streak Home Away Philadelphia 13 4 765 73 Won 3 9l 2 Montreal 11 7 611 2'? 8-2 Lost 1 8-4 3-3 St. Louis 10 8 556 3Vs 4-6 Won 1 7-5 3-3 Chicago 9 8 529 4 6-4 Won 1 6 5 3 3 Pirates 9 9 .500 4' 3-7 Won 1 5-6 4-3 New York 8 9 471 5 46 Lost 2 47 Florida 7 11 .389 6Vi 5-5 Won 2 3-6 4-5 WEST DIVISION Pet GB L10 Streak Home Away Houston 10 7 iaii 64 Lost 1 24 6X3 San Francisco 11 8 .579 6-4 Won 1 5-2 6-6 Atlanta 1 1 9 550 Vi 5-5 Lost 1 4-3 7-6 San Diego 8 9 471 2 fr4 Won 2 34 55 Colorado 6 11 353 4 46 Lost 2 TI 26 Onannati 6 12 333 4v Lost 1 24 il) Los Angeles 6 13 5l6 5 37 Lost 6 33 IfTo AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST DIVISION Pet GB L10 Streak Home Away Detroit 12 5 706 91 Won 5 71 54 Boston VI 8 79 2 AS Lost 5 ifl 57 New York "l0 8 Hii 2v 5S Won 2 33 75 Toronto 10 8 56 2 5i Won 2 S3 44 Milwaukee 6 9 400 5 Lost 2 34 35 Cleveland 7 11 ili 5Vi 46 Won 2 43 Baltimore 5 Ti 3Y3 6i 46 Lostl 2S 3S WEST DIVISION Pet GB L10 Streak Home Away California 12 4 750 ifl Won 6 55 3l Texas 10 6 25 2 Won 2 2 64 Chicago 8 9 471 4VS 445 Lost 2 23 6M5 Minnesota 8 9 471 4VS 5i Lost 3 57 3l Seattle 8 10 444 5 45 Lost 2 65 Ti Kansas City 7 Ti 89 6 Won1 57 24 Oakland 5 10 33 6V4 ill Lost 4 5S 04 Candelaria placed on DLr lefty Robertson called up NATIONAL LEAGUE SUNDAY'S RESULTS Pirates 7 Houston 2 San Francisco 4 Montreal 1 Philadelphia 5 Los Angeles 2 San Diego 9 New York 8 St Louis 7 Atlanta 3 Chicago 2 Cincinnati 1 Florida 11 Colorado 1 TUESDAY'S SCHEDULE Pirates at Atlanta, 740 p.m. San Francisco at Philadelphia, 12:35 p.m.

"He has above-average Leyland said. "I like his stuff. He's i young left-hander with good stuff1. How he's going to do, I have no idea." Robertson had no idea why Assistant General Manager Cam Bonifay telephoned his apartment at about 11 o'clock Saturday night, either. "When I heard his voice, I kind thought he just wanted to know what was going on at Buffalo," Robertson said.

"Come to find they wanted me to come to Pittsburgh Lyesterday morning. I could barely answer him but eventually I did say OK. "It was a pretty big shock. Things' happen when you least expect them. And I wasn't expecting this." Robertson made three starts for the Bisons.

He had a loss and two no-decisions, working 17' 3 innings and allowing 18 hits, seven walks and eight runs. In his last start, Thursday against New Orleans, he yielded five hits, a walk and three runs in six innings. Robertson, an All-Southwest Conference pitcher for Texas in 1990, will be used in relief by the Pirates, but he's been a starter throughout his minor-league career. By Paul Meyer Post-Gazette Sports Writer The Pirates placed pitcher John Candelaria on the 15-day disabled list yesterday and called up left-handed pitcher Rich Robertson from Buffalo. Candelaria has a strained intercostal muscle in the back of his left rib cage, which occurred April 15 while pitching in San Diego.

Candelaria will not throw for a week, then probably be put on a throwing program designed to have him ready to pitch when he's eligible to come off the DL May 10. Robertson, 24, was the Pirates' ninth-round draft pick in 1990 and reached Class AAA Buffalo this year after impressing Pirates Manager Jim Leyland during spring training, his first in the major-league camp. Robertson remained in the big-league camp through the first several roster cuts. "He's got a chance to develop into a good pitcher," Leyland said. "That's why we held onto him.

We wanted to give him a chance to face some better hitters. We think he has a future." Robertson appeared in three spring training games. He pitched 7V4 innings and allowed nine hits, Al FuchsPosl-Gazette Jeff King beats the tag by Houston catcher Scott Servais to give the Pirates a 6-2 lead in the sixth inning. The Pirates did that in the eighth inning on a walk to King, Merced's infield hit, third baseman Ken Ca-miniti's throwing error and Young's sacrifice fly.

By then, Tomlin's day had ended a lot later than in his previous two starts when he pitched a total of 7 innings. "In my opinion," Slaught said, "he Tomlin did a lot better throwing his breaking balls for strikes. He wasn't getting behind and having to trick people. When you can get your slider and curve over, it takes a lot of the pressure off everything. And he was locating his fastball with good sink on it.

"When a pitcher does that, it's hard for the hitter to cover all three pitches." NOTES The Pirates will begin a two-game series in Atlanta tonight. The importance of Tomlin's play was magnified moments later when Jeff Bagwell smoked a ground-rule double that bounced over the right-center field wall. Biggio had to stop at third, but had Parker gotten his bunt down successfully, the Astros would have had two runs on Bagwell's double.

Tomlin then got Chris James to fly to right, and a potentially large inning for Houston turned up empty- Tomlin did allow Scott Servais' first major-league home run with two outs in the fourth inning, but that was it. The Pirates went to work against Portugal in the bottom of the fourth. Jeff King doubled, moved to third on Orlando Merced's bouncer to second and scored on Kevin Young's bouncing single through the middle. The Pirates took the lead with three runs in the fifth, which Tomlin began with a single to right. Al Martin singled Tomlin to second.

Jay Bell bunted in front of the plate, and Portugal threw the ball past first base, allowing Tomlin to score and Martin to reach third. Andy Van Slyke's single to right put the Pirates ahead, 3-2. And Bell scored on Merced's tap to Bagwell. In the sixth, a walk to Young, Don Slaught's single and Tom Foley's sacrifice fly made it 5-2. "Pitching picks everybody up," Leyland said.
