A CMU spokesman gave this account: The mishap occured shortly after 1 p.m. as six to 12 members of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity worked on the buggy, sitting in a rented truck.

Mass of Catholic Christian St James Church, Monday at 10am HUDSON Cella, on Wednesday April 16, 1986; beloved wife of the late Claude Hud. son; mother of McAllister of Los Angeles, Witness tells inquest crash survivor 'high' By Carole Patton Smith Post-Gazette Staff Writer The Good Samaritan who stopped to help two people after their cars crashed on Route 28 wondered yesterday whether he aided the right person. Herbert Miller testified at a coroner's inquest he was driving north on Route 28 March 26 when he saw Mark Hammond's pick-up truck cross the center line and crash into the car in front of him. Miller stopped his car and ran to the truck, pulling Hammond out.

As he and another man were helping Hammond, 28, of 19 Mineola West View, Miller said he heard Colleen Ann Sundo screaming for help in the other vehicle. Miller said he could tell that Hammond was "high," noting, "If we'd known he was loaded, we would have tried to get the lady first." Sundo was burned to death at the scene. Following the brief hearing, Hammond was ordered held for court on a charge of homicide by vehicle by Deputy Coroner Arthur Gilkes for the death of Sundo, 27, of 407 Short Canal Sharpsburg. Sundo, who was months pregnant with her second child, was returning home from her job as a nurse at Mercy Hospital when the crash occurred. Hammond also was ordered by Shaler District Justice James Bowen to stand trial on charges of driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.

Bowen presided over the inquest with Gilkes because the accident occurred in Shaler. Assistant District Attorney Lisa Vincler said about three hours after. the midnight accident, Hammond's blood-alcohol level was .25, or times the legal limit. Miller, 35, an employee of Hills department store, said the impact of the crash forced both Sundo's car and Hammond's truck onto the road tracks. That was when he stopped his car: "I pulled Hammond out of the truck and dragged him away from the truck.

I asked him if he was all right. He said, I'm all right. Every. thing's cool. Everything's I told him it wasn't cool because he was' just in an accident," Miller said.

When asked what he thought of Hammond's condition at the time, Miller said, "In my assumption, he was high. Cut and dried. Period. He was high. "It could have been marijuana, it.

could have been whiskey. It could have been anything," Miller After dragging Hammond from the truck, he ran over to Sundo's car. "When I tried to help the lady, her legs were burning and she was screaming. It was burning faster: than anything I had ever seen. It was too hot to get in," Miller said.

An autopsy revealed Sundo died at the scene of extensive burns over her entire body. Travelers' roundup began treating the wheels with hexane, an oily, flammable chemical. Hexane leaked onto a radio and burst into flames, filling the truck with smoke. Fraternity members grabbed the buggy and pulled it out of the truck to free the woman. Injured in the rescue effort was James Angelo, a 21-year-old CMU sophomore from Uniontown.

He was listed in serious condition in Mercy Hospital with burns of the legs, face, neck and right arm, covering 10 percent of his body. Also hospitalized was Lee Andre, age unknown, a CMU graduate and fraternity member, who suffered a burn on his right arm. He was taken to West Penn Hospital, which would not release his condition until his parents are notified. LATEST DEATHS Bayer, Theodore F. late Square WalA. 'Lona sister of 0.A. Duquesne Light dividend cut, power plant to close (Continued from Page 1) von Schack could not give an estimate of the total savings from the six-point restructuring plan, dubbed the "Duquesne Plan." He did say that closing the Phillips plant would save $150 million over five years and a previously announced partial shutdown of the Brunot Island plant will save another $15 million annually. The shutdowns will reduce Duquesne Light's generating capacity by 575 megawatts, or about 18 percent. The new nuclear plants, when they come on line during the next two years, will add back 279 megawatts in generating power 1 for the company.

Duquesne Light reported net income for 1985 of $176 million, equal to $2.26 per common share after preferred stock dividends were paid. von Schack said 1986 earnings are expected to be in excess of $2 a share. Yesterday's announcement was not the company's first effort to trim costs. In February, it announced the layoff of 100 employees, a salary reduction for top management and a number of other measures. In the annual report to shareholders, Duquesne Light noted a reduction in capital spending for the next two years.

Duquesne Light currently has the second highest rates of any electric utility in the state. By making its rates more competitive, it would put Duquesne Light in a better position to compete with other electric utilities in attracting industrial customers. Yesterday's announcement was made after the close of the stock market. Duquesne Light's common stock ended trading yesterday at unchanged from Thursday. von Schack said he expects the' stock price to fall initially, but would not say by how much.

After shareholders and stock analysts understand the restructuring and its long-term benefits to the company, the price will recover, he predicted. The $2.05 dividend paid last year is equal to 95 percent of last year's net income. To retain the 11.1 percent yield the stock had at the higher dividend rate and yesterday's closing price, the price would have to drop to $10.90 a share. Services held for slain elderly Approximately 100 neighbors and former co-workers yesterday attended funeral services for three elderly North Side residents who were slashed to death Monday in what police believe was a fight over money with a teen-age neighbor. Services followed by private interment were conducted for Edward Kalberer, 73, and his wife, Mary, 74, at the Novak Funeral Home at 3313 Brighton Road, North Side.

A 10 a.m. Mass was celebrated at St. Gabriel Archangel Church of North Side for Ann Jacobs, 92, the A mother of Mrs. Kalberer, who ed with the couple at 3409 Simen Ave. Burial was in St.

Joseph: Cemetery. Donald Zoller, 14, of 3505 Simen who did yard work for the Kalberers, has been charged with. three counts of criminal homicide for the killings. An inquest into their deaths is set for Tuesday. Another student, Frank a CMU student from Maryland, suffered a hand burn but declined a ride to the hospital.

Bierny is from Wellesley, Mass. CMU spokesman Matt Maguire said the races continued after the accident. CMU engineering and computer students compete annually to design buggies, which are pushed by hand at the start of the race, then coast down a hill. Lottery numbers Yesterday's daily number 768.
