"When people tell you sex education ought to be taught at home, they are not teaching sex education at.

home," said Tatum, who designed and coordinated the Family Life Education Program in Falls Church. As a teacher of seventh through 12th grades, her classes include anatomy, sex in media and how to critique it, sex roles, sexual identity, communications skills such as how to assert oneself and how to say no, population and family planning and problem solving. In any sex education program, Tatum said, the community ought first to form a committee comprising faculty, religious leaders, health professionals, administrators and school board members. Schools and the community must work together in deciding what is and is not wanted, she said. By Lynda Guydon if ost-Gazette Staff Writer 5c Mary Lee Tatum helps take the i generation gap out of sex education 1 by assigning students to ask parents 1 about their births.

"Communication between parents and kids is a very laudable goal," the I Falls Church, teacher told her colleagues last week at a conference fori adolescent sexuality education held at the Downtown YWCA. i The two-day conference, which ended Thursday, was sponsored by Pittsburgh Planned Parenthood and attracted about 140 professionals from across the state. They included 4eachers, health care personnel, guidance counselors, clergy and oth- er adults who work with teen-agers. While Tatum's homework assign-I ment may get discussions started, she said it is often up to the schools to She recommended meeting opponents' panic and anger with understanding, then voting on a program and going from there. Finally, the children of sex education opponents should be allowed not to participate.

"Sex education needs to be matter-of-fact and comprehensive," she advised. For some communities, the program includes health clinics where teen-agers receive contraceptives. In Baltimore, the opening of one such clinic in conjunction with sex education was reported to have produced a 30 percent drop in teen pregnancies, Tatum said. In the final analysis, each community must decide for itself whether clinics will be included in a sex education program and what the clinic will offer, she said.
