Protopresbyter Michael Hanas was a pnest in the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Diocese. He was pastor emeritus of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church on the North Side, serving as pastor there for 22 years, until his retirement in 1991.

"He has devoted his life to his church. In life, he was a spiritual man, and this was displayed in the way he associated with people," said the Very Rev. John S. Brancho, the current pastor of the North Side church. Even in his retirement, Brancho said, Father Hanas remained active, always ready to help care for the 100 families in the church when Brancho took vacations or was on a medical disability.

Father Hanas, 80, died Saturday of complications from cancer. A resident of Cranberry, he died at the Lutheran Affiliated Services St. John Speciality Care Center in Mars, where he had been living for about two months. Father Hanas completed his theological education in Carpatho-Russian Diocesan Seminary in Johnstown in 1943, the same year he married Anna Bilchak in Bridgeport, Conn. She died in 1993.

From 1943 to 1961, he served as pastor of St. Nicholas Church in Elizabeth, N.J. In 1961, he was transferred to St. Michael Church in Freeland, Luzerne County. In 1969, he came to St.

Police early yesterday arrested Joseph Matthew Mrozek, who had been sought since he failed to appear for trial in September in Fayette County Common Pleas Court.

Mrozek, 46, formerly of Chestnut Ridge, is charged with homicide in the death July 3, 1990, of Danette Lynn Ritz, 28, of Redstone. Ritz was found shot to death near a remote lake in Redstone. In September 1993, a Fayette County jury found Mrozek guilty of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole, but his conviction was overturned on a technicality in 1995. His new trial was to have begun Sept.

10, but he failed to appear. A segment about Mrozek aired Saturday night on "The New America's Most Wanted: America Fights Back." Within a short time, authorities in and around Nashville began receiving tips that Mrozek was living with a woman in Lakewood, and that the two had been working at a restaurant in Good-lettsville, since late September. (103 pages.) By Jan Ackerman Post-Gazette Staff Writer John James Jaffurs III, 73, whose success as a Wilkinsburg high school football player led him to a career as a college coach, died Thursday at his home in South Park. The cause of death was not immediately known. Mr. Jaffurs, the oldest of seven children of Greek immigrant parents, grew up in Wilkinsburg. He was the the first in his family to go to college, said his brother, Alexander J.

Jaffurs, a lawyer and former mayor of Wilkinsburg. "John was my first hero," said Jaffurs, who was seven years younger. "He skipped a grade. He graduated from Wilkinsburg High School at age 16. He was a football player.

He won a scholarship. He became a hero to a lot of kids around Wilkinsburg." Mr. Jaffurs, a guard, won a football scholarship to Perm State University, where he was a second-string Ail-American and was chosen to play in an East-West Shrine game. His college career was interrupted by World War II, where he served as a second lieutenant in the Army and received two Purple Hearts. He suffered one of his wounds in the Battle of the Bulge.

He returned to the states in 1945 and married Mary McCurdy. "He came home on a hospital ship from England on July 1, my birthday, and we were married on July 7, 1945," said Mrs. Jaffurs, his wife of 52 years. After the war, Mr. Jaffurs finished his degree and played professional football with the Washington Redskins for one year with the great quarterback Sammy Baugh.

Then he took a position as an assistant football coach at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. From there, he went to Ithaca High School in Ithaca, N.Y., where he coached three championship football teams in five years, said his daughter, Patricia O'Neill of South Park. Then he went to Cornell University, where he was a coach for about six years. O'Neill said her father frequently was the recipient of honors, most recently at a Penn State banquet. A scholarship fund was established at Ithaca High School last year in honor of him and another coach.

After leaving Cornell, Mr. Jaffurs became a salesman for GATX, a Chicago-based company that located him in New Orleans, New Jersey and New York City. He was an Eastern regional sales manager before retiring in 1986 and returning to Western Pennsylvania. Since then, he and his wife had traveled extensively. "He was the sweetest man in the whole world, not what you would expect of a football coach very soft-spoken, mild-mannered, polite and kind," O'Neill said.
