PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE I SUNDAY, MARCH 16, 1997 B-9: OBITUARIES WAGNER Minister related to Pirates legend By Ellen M. Perlmutter Post-Gazette Staff Writer As a great-nephew of Pirates' baseball legend Honus Wagner, Robert Wagner was a Pittsburgh Pirates fan. He even had a chance to buy a baseball card of his famous greatuncle for $10,000. His wife, Marian, however, thought that would be too much money to spend when they had five boys to educate. The card recently sold at an auction for more than $600,000.

Marian Wagner said her husband, who died of cancer Wednesday at his home in Lakewood, Ohio, never regretted the decision. As much as he liked baseball, Mr. Wagner, 67, had more fun on skis, at the golf course, playing tennis and cycling. "He his preferred participatory wife said. Mr.

Wagner, who grew up in Mt. Lebanon before moving to the Cleveland area in 1957, had recently retired as a regional sales manager for the Shields-Wright Rubber Brooklyn Heights, Ohio. He was a lay minister for St. James Catholic Church in Lakewood. In addition to his wife, Marian Englert Wagner, Mr.

Wagner is survived by five sons, Richard, David, Edward and John, all of Cleveland, and Peter of Goffstown, N.H.; his mother, Sarah C. Wagner of Mt. Lebanon; a sister, Barbara W. Ehland, of Mt. Lebanon; and four grandchildren.

A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church, Lakewood. ROBERT SAUDEK Producer, director of award 1950s TV series Robert Saudek, 85, Emmy winning producer and director of the 1950s series "Omnibus," died from a heart ailment Thursday at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. As director of the television-radio workshop for the Ford Foundation, Saudek helped create "Omnibus," an Alistair Cookehosted show that became the longest running cultural series in commercial television.

Mr. Saudek won several Emmy awards as a result of the show, which presented dramas based on the literature of writers such as John Steinbeck, T.S. Eliot and Ernest Hemingway. Born in Pittsburgh, Mr. Saudek graduated from Harvard University and did postgraduate work at Duquesne University from 1935 to 1938.

Mr. Saudek's career began at a radio station in Pittsburgh. He joined ABC television in the 1940s and moved to Washington in 1983. There he served as chief of the motion pictures, broadcasting and recorded sound division for the Library of Congress.
