'As, a result, his planned return championship: former boxing heavyweight champion of the world. For five weeks, Liston has been working and living among the legends of early American.

We doubt very much if Sonny knows too much about the Pilgrim fathers who landed there some 344 years ago, but unwittingly he has stolen a leaf from them. A Sonny Liston bout with Charles (Sonny) Liston here Monday night was called off indefinitely. The announcement Clay's hernia attack hit the press room at 46 Beacon St. like a around 8 p. in. It was first believed to be another of Clay's publicity-seeking motives with every one laughing It off.

A call to City Hospital confirmed that Clay, who likes to be called Muhammad Ali, was rushed to the hospital earlier in the evening. Local fans also will see Clendon Thomas, formerly a defensive safety man, playing the split end position. He latched on to four passes for 61 yards last Sunday in his debut with the offensive unit.

And his physical condition shows it. He is lean and, I might add, mean. He acknowledged the presence of the press with a curt nod but for the third straight day wouldn't talk to any of them. Respects Clay Now The scowling Sonny would be the last man in the world to admit he had any respect for the man who humbled him but his every move would indicate this. Today he worked the equivalent of 15 rounds, six of them actual fighting.

Remember, this was three days before the fight suddenly blew up. We remember, too, that in Miami, Lislon knocked off work a week ahead of time. Sonny's weight is a well kept secret around here but from one of his trainers we learned that he was down to around 208 after the stiff workout today. It was expected he would have come in between 208 and 210, a good weight for the ex-champion. From another man close as anyone can get to him, we learned that Sonny's private thoughts in the coming bout were that he has no easy assignment.

"The champ learned his lesson the last time," we were told. "He knows now that Cassius is no pushover, a guy who is all mouth and can't fight. He knows Clay can move with the speed of a lightweight and he's done everything to get himself in shape to go 15 rounds if necessary." Site Proof of Intention There were some experts here today who 'thought Liston was over-trained, that his efforts to make ready for Clay hurt him jmore than helped. We wouldn't know about this, jtot having the expert's eye in such matters. We 'do know this, Liston is in superb condition by comparison with the last two times we saw him prepare lor a title fight.

His training camp here atop Plymouth's white cliffs overlooking the Atlantic is further proof that Sonny meant business this time. It is as far removed from Las Vegas and Miami Beach as Liston would be making a speech before the PTA. In Vegas, where he drilled for the second Floyd Patterson battle, the drone of the croupier, the whirl of the slot-machines and dancing dolls offered a backdrop. In Miami Beach, the plush surroundings were enough to detract if nothing else. Liston chose this beautiful, quiet place, some 53 miles South of Boston, because he wanted to make sure he'd be right physically and mentally in his effort to regain the crown.

No greater tribute was paid Clay than this. 'ZJjtT Train' Forces Issue The whole training picture around Liston, aside from his ferocious scowl, appeared changed. His head trainer, Willie Reddish, was still around throwing the heavy medicine ball into Sonny's midriff until Willie, himself, cried uncle. And, the ex-champ still did his rope-skipping routine as rhythmically and beautifully as a ballet dancer. Aside from these, we offer testimony of changes.

There's a trim-looking, compact fellow dressed in blue, named Stanley Zimmering, who seems to have a lot to say about getting Liston into condition. He started the drill today by having Sonny and four sparring partners do calisthenics as would a football team before a game. Liston started out with 13 sparring partners. Only two remained. They were Amos (Big Train) Lincoln and Curtice Bruce.

Lincoln, who weighs 201, and like Clay, towers two inches over Liston, gave him three rough rounds. The "Big Train" forced the issue and, while he appeared to be landing often with his fists, he took a bad beating, especially in the last two rounds. Bruce, who weighs 175, emulated Clay for two rounds. He stabbed with his left and ran. He got away with it for a while until the stalking Liston caught up with him and fired a left and right combination that almost dropped Bruce.

The boys were fighting for keeps, no punches barred. Liston looked tremendous by comparison. But, then, he wasn't fighting Clay, and he won't be for at least three months, so say the doctors who examined Ali at the hospital. week but, as Panther Aid Walt Cummins put it: fight to him in a couple of selves off the floor arter lac the rounds. ing a lot of adversity early setting up goals and too often skates off the ice with a victorv.

The 12 defeat for Army was their worst since a 38-8 setback by Michigan three years ago. It was the only time they were shut out since 1050 when Syracuse beat them, 7-0. Coach John Michclosen had the squad quartered at nearby Rear Mountain Inn. They came over to West Point this afternoon for a short workout in Michie Stadium.
