B. Moreland funeral home. "Better?" he asked softly. She didn't answer. His arm was encircling her now.

"Connie, look at me!" She did. and before she knew it his lips were on hers, firm, hard lips, and he was kissing her. "That was wretched of you She pulled herself away into her own corner again. "Wretched "Was it? Sorry you didn't like It. I did.

I've been wanting to kiss you ever since that afternoon in your kitchen, Connie. I almost kissed you when we were talking in the library at Seahurst early Saturday morning. I had to keep a tight grip on myself to keep from kissing you. "Its raining We'd better be hurrying along "A moment ago we were pretending it wasn't raining, and I was kissing you. Do you forget so quickly?" There was a tight feeling in her throat, the kind she always had when she started to cry.

Silly wanting to cry here in the rain with Clive beside her Silly. "Angry?" Was she angry? She didn't know, but she told him she was very angry, and kept her eyes glued to the glistening, black road. "I'm not sorry, Connie, so I can't apologize. I'm not in the least sorry I kissed you, I'm glad. And it's really your fault that I did kiss you.

It wasn't Clive Douglas' kiss that had made her angry- Whe had well she had liked that, much as she hated to admit it even to herself. What made her angry was the fact that Clive was playing with her. "A miserable person to be in love with," she murmured aloud, when the covers were over her and the lights out.

"But I think I anj in love with him. It must be love. I've never feit this way before about any man. I hate him for what he is and then weak and foolish I love him, too. Before she finally fell asleep, she knew why she had heeu watching Janet and Clive so much this past week-end.

for Ned ir.nins around What an amazing person he was! Actually smiling when he was thanking her for returning the bracelets! Smiling and looking at the road. The smile lingered on his lips for a long time. Connie was watching it, her own face very grave. "You can't take anything seriously, can you?" she exclaimed indignantly. "Don't you think you take life too seriously, Connie? Let's forget about my visit last week to the Irving apartments, let's forget about the bracelets and let's just remember that "You're forgetting your visit tonight to the Irving apartments "Well, let's forget that, too.

Pretend I'm a nice young man. Pretend you don't know anything about me at all, except what is good. Tretend it's a starry, moonlight night instead of a cloudy one. "Fretend it isn't going to rain. It'll only take a little imagination, and I know you've got more than a little! What do you say?" She felt a raindrop on her lips, cool, soft, another on her cheek, another on her hand that was outside the blanket.

risrht, it's a glorious moonlit nieht, and we're riding to nowhere, and the air is balmy, and it isn't summer, it's spring, and there's a smell of lilacs in the Douslas laughed. "And of course, we won't put up the top, because it isn't raining. I love to ride in the rain, don't you, Connie?" "I do. More scattered, cool drops touched her face. "Now if you'll call me I'll le satisfied.

I'm a respectable young man, remember 'Clive." She must be crazy, but it was fun being crazy, pretending Clive Douglas was a decent person, forgetting what she knew about him "Thanks, my dear. We've been much too formal with each other, and on a glorious, moonlit, spring night a man and a girl should never be formal!" 'That's Easy' So that was why he kissed her! Curiosity. The tears which had been on the point of falling were checked abruptly and the tight, miserable feeling in her throat disappeared. Curiosity.

Kissing her when he was angling to marry Janet Ritchie Connie was furious at herself for falling for his pretense game. She should have known it would end disastrously. Playing with her when his interest lay only in Janet. Amusing himself with her! The remainder of the ride was made in silence, and without even a good night Connie got out of the car at the side porte cochere at Seahurst and ran into the house. When she was in her room with the door locked, she tore off the pink taffeta jacket and dress viciously.
