E-5 OBITUARIES ELLEN CORBY BILL WENDELL PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTK SUNDAY, APRIL 18. 1999 Comic foil, announcer for Letterman, Kovacs 9 Emmy winner who played TVs Grandma Walton vacs, Nunziata said. "They were always playing practical jokes on each other," his daughter said. "One time Ernie was supposed to gulp a big martini, but it was supposed to be filled with water, only it was really filled with vodka. He spit it out and started coughing like crazy on live national television.

Dad and his cronies were laughing their heads off." Mr. Wendell was born William Joseph Wenzel Jr. on March 22, 1924, in New York City to William J. Wenzel a beverage distributor and an owner of several Manhattan fruit stands, and Mildred S. Wenzel, a housewife.

After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he worked in radio and early television. He had taken the professional name of Wendell "because he wanted to give his family some privacy and maybe a German name at that time wasn't that popular," Mrs. Nunziata said. Mr. Wendell then went on to work as a staff radio and television announcer for NBC, on call for network promotions, special news bulletins and network identifications.

By Anthony Ramirez The New York Times Bill Wendell, a radio and television announcer whose crisp authoritative voice provided an ironic foil to entertainers from Ernie Kovacs to David Letterman, died Wednesday at a hospice in Boca Raton, Fla. He was 75. The cause of death was complications from cancer, said one of his daughters, Francette Nunziata. Until his retirement in 1995, Mr. Wenzel was most recently known for the off-stage introduction of guests at the beginning of Letter-man's show at NBC and later CBS.

The introductions typically began with a municipal characterization like, "From New York, mountain fortress of the ancient Incas, it's 'Late Night With David Letterman' But Mr. Wendell also worked with Bob Hope, Dave Garroway, Jack Paar, Merv Griffin, Gary Moore, Alan King, Tom Snyder, Billy Crystal and Jerry Seinfeld. But what brought him the earliest and widest attention was his work in the 1950s as the on-air sidekick for Ernie Ko Humphrey Bogart's secretary; "Hush Hush, Sweet Charlotte," in which she was the town gossip; and "Please Don't Eat the Daisies," in which she portrayed Martha the maid. She also had an active career on television. As Hubcaps Lesch, she sold Barney Fife a bad car on "The Andy Griffith Show." She played Mother Lurch in "The Addams Family" and Miss Hanna the beloved acting teacher in an episode of "I Love Lucy" when Lucille Ball meets Orson Welles.

Miss Corby had a recurring role with Robert Culp in the Western series "Trackdown," which appeared in 1957-1959, and on the family comedy "Please Don't Eat the Daisies" which ran from 19G5 to 19G7. But it was as Esther, the matriarch in "The Waltons" opposite Will Geer who played the grandfather Zeb, that made her a fixture in the hearts of television viewers. She ByJonThurber Los Angeles Times LOS ANGELES Ellen Corby, who won three Emmys for playing the strong grandmother on the hit 1970s TV series "The Waltons," has died. Miss Corby died Wednesday in the Motion Picture and Television Hospital. She was 87.

In a career that spanned nearly 60 years, Miss Corby played modest characters in a rich and textured way. She appeared in nearly 100 feature films, including "I Remember Mama," playing Aunt Trina, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actress in 1948; "It's a Wonderful Life," in which she played a depositor who withdrew a small amount of money from the beleaguered Bailey Building and Loan; the original "Sabrina," in which she was OTHER DEATHS 1978 photo Ellen Corby won Emmy awards for her work on the series 1973, 1975 and 1976 and a Golden Globe in 1974. The series, a gentle saga about an extended family living in the backwoods of Virginia during and after the Depression, personified the notion of family values. The show was inspired by a 1971 Christmas movie for television "The Homecoming," which was based on Earl Hamner novel about his real-life relatives. The show ran from 1972 to 1981, but Miss Corby's participation was cut short by a stroke in the late 1970s.
