Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Tuesday, July 30, 1991 Illusion made provocative in mime's fine performance- Grandparents take on a labor of love GRANDCHILDREN FROM PACE 9 impediment; her 2-year-old grandson, born with six fingers on each hand also has behavioral problems. "So far the baby seems to be normal," Blakey said. A graduate of Fifth Avenue High School and the Sawyer Secretarial School, Blakey says she needs to work but cannot afford child care. "It's difficult just buying shoes, clothes and keeping food on the table, plus paying my rent and utilities." What she would really like to do is write children's stories and poetry. She writes her allegorical tales and verse in longhand in a spiral notebook after the children nave gone to bed.

She is very proud of a certificate of merit she received from a poetry magazine for one of her pieces. When asked how she feels toward her daughter, who is again pregnant, for the financial and emotional predicament she is in, Blakey says, "I still love my daughter. She's in a program now and I hope she can get her act together so she coulatake some responsibility for her children." For those interested in additional information on the Pittsburgh Chapter of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, call Tony Gruen at 761-8702. their shot records that no one could seem to find." Her salvation was Bethesda Center, also in Homewood, which is a United Way Agency as well as a Pittsburgh Presbytery Mission Agency. Its director, Nathaniel Johnson, said that when Blakey came to Bethesda her immediate needs were a place to live and food for the children.

The Center provided her with a security deposit to rent housing and gave her groceries from its Food Pantry. When finally she started to receive money $294.50 every two weeks from Aid to Families with Dependent Children Blakey started to assess her other considerable problems. When she attempted to enroll the 7-year-old in school she learned he had never been to school and could not read or write. Again, the Bethesda Center provided the needed help by accepting the youngster in its pre-school program. Johnson said the youngster has made astonishing progress and Blakey proudly said he will be going to second grade this fall.

The problems with two of the other children, however, are more, acute. Blakey's 3-year-old granddaughter suffers from fetal alcohol syndrome and has a severe speech "Court-ordered child support from the child's father, goes to the one who has legal custody." But the most important reason, said Miller, "is to protect the heart. It is easy to fall in love in sue months." As Kirkland noted, gaining custody of a grandchild can be very expensive, and for some grandparents, it is not financially feasible. For Loretta Blakey, 42, of Home-wood, the process was also exhaustive and exasperating. She became the sole caregiver of four grandchildren, ages 7, 3, 2 and 17 months last September when the Allegheny County Children and Youth Services told her the children's living conditions were unacceptable and they were being taken away from their mother.

The mother of the four is Bla-key's 26 year-old, unmarried daughter who has a drug and alcohol problem. At the time Blakey was receiving unemployment compensation and living with an older woman who was unwilling to accept the youngsters into her home. "It took me 2'i months to get any money for these kids and in the meantime, to get custody, I had to produce their birth certificates which were all over the place, and By Tony Norman Post-Gazette Staft Writer "Confessions of an Illusionist," Dan Kamin's semi-autobiographical exploration of one mime's dark night of the soul is a rare thing performance art that is provocative, seriocomic and thoroughly entertaining. Well-known as an illusionist and a mime's mime, Kamin has achieved a level of success that has brought him roles in genre films such as "Creep-show II, a David Mamet play and gigs in high places like the White House and the American Embassy in London. With these achievements serving as the background for "Confessions of an Illusionist," the show opens silently with Kamin performing the classic mime rope routine he's performed "hundreds of times" in his career.

"My face is breaking out, I'm tired and sore," Kamin says after removing his makeup and speaking to the audience from the motel room stage left. The voices of an inane news anchor duo (Michael Jon and Susan Chapek) chirp happily from an unseen television, a bizarre reminder of Pittsburgh's own "Mike and Edye." Kamin is convincing as an existential fool who pines for his ex-lover-partner "Doris" in letters and phone calls to her answering machine from STAGE REVIEW his many stops on the road. "I don't need you, but I still want you," he yells at one point, promising "no more illusions" if she'll only come back to him. Like a Samuel Beckett character caught in the grip of cosmic Kamin is unable to reach Doris by phone and resorts to leaving comical messages on her answering machine. He punctuates his soliloquies with traditional center stage perfor-i mances, sleight-of-hand tricks and original mime skits, requiring audi- ence participation.

Like every self-respecting postmo- demist, Kamin good-naturedly in diets the audience for its unconscious to illusion" and lust for "cheap entertainment for its owir-sake" that makes it possible for him to create his illusions in the first place. As a "veteran of the domestic wars," Kamin makes it easy for the audience to identify with his charac--; ter because he successfully mirrors frustrations that are no doubt real to many people. "Confessions of an sponsored by the Three Rivers'z Shakespeare Festival, plays Aug. 1-4 i at The Pit, Bouquet and Sennottz streets, Oakland. Tickets are $9.

Miller, a specialist in family law with Reed Smith Shaw McClay, advises grandparents caring for grandchildren to seek legal custody of the youngsters. "The problem here is that although the hearts, souls and lives of the grandparents are tied up with their grandchildren, the supreme right to the kids is with the natural parents.

If sometime down the road the parents want the children back, without custody, it is very tough to sever parental rights." Further, Cohen said, grandparents need custody to have the nght to control and make decisions for the grandchild including those dealing with medical treatment. "Otherwise, while they may not have problems with minor medical problems, in a life-threatening situation, they might not have the legal right to seek treatment for the child." There is another compelling reason to seek child custody, Miller said, and that is to get child support. 263-1201 090 Schools-Instructions 451 Business Senices 090 Schools-Instructions 030 Help Wanted Crafts Now COUNTRY PIGS DUFF'S BUSINESS INSTITUTE WANTED CARRIERS for Delivery Bellevue Avalon Emsworth Area Making ta house deliverlet and collections.
