I B-8 PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE SUNDAY, AUGUST 27, 1995 Project protecting mussels from zebras Ljf i 34W A i1! 1 null Father, son meet after 20 years Tracing of lost son is girlfriend's gift to dad on birthday By Eleanor Chute Post-Gazette Staff Writer Vince Scimone of Sheraden told his dad he was afraid he'd miss his flight's arrival at Pittsburgh International Airport. "I'd have waited," replied his dad, Tony Scimone of Orange, Calif. The wait would have been short compared with the two decades they'd been apart. Vince Scimone, 22, hasn't seen his dad, 44, since he was a year and a half old and Tony Scimone walked out on his family. But the years melted away as they embraced at the gate yesterday, with the son helping to support his dad, who now walks with a cane.

Joining the teary-eyed group was Vince Scimone's mother, Linda No-velli; her husband, Robert; and their son, B.J., 13. "Now I've got two dads," Scimon-esaid. "This makes my life getting to see my dad." Tony Scimone said his absence had bothered him for a long time. Having married in 1972, about a year after returning from serving in Vietnam, he said he felt tied down and wanted to see places and do things. "I have regrets," he said.

"Not main in the hatchery pond until a suitable home can be found or until the zebra mussel invasion declines. In that case, the mussels will be returned to the Ohio River, Duncan said. The hatchery also plans to conduct experimental breeding of six freshwater mussel species similar to the endangered species, she said. If successful, the new mussels will be raised at the hatchery until they are about a year old and then placed into native habitats to help endangered populations recover, Duncan said. Freshwater mussels thrive, in lakes, creeks and rivers with slow to moderate current and clean water.

The continental United States contains the world's most diverse collection of freshwater mussels, including 297 recognized species and subspecies in rivers and lakes. Clusters of the tiny, rapidly multiplying zebra mussels have clogged water intake valves in several large U.S. cities along Lake Erie and the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. They also encrust other freshwater equipment such as dams, hydroelectric plants, ships, piers and locks. They are believed to have been transplanted from Europe through the ballast tanks of ships.

When the ships released their ballast in the Great Lakes, they released the mussels along with other foreign species of marine life. The mussel project will not affect trout production at White Sulphur Springs, Duncan said. The hatchery provides 1.7 million rainbow trout eggs to other federal and state hatcheries. Virginia Tech is helping state and federal authorities in the transfer. By The Associated Press WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va.

The six-foot chain link fence that surrounds a Greenbrier County pond is meant to keep out burglars, but not the human kind. Netting is draped across the top of the fencing around the 55-by-240-foot pond to keep raccoons and predator birds from the endangered freshwater mussels stored there. The mussels have been rescued from the Ohio River in a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service project. The service is scouring the river basin for 15 species of the mussels and shipping them to the federal fish hatchery at White Sulphur Springs.

In the river, the mussels are in danger of being killed by zebra mussels, a rapidly growing predator that attaches itself to the other mussels in such vast numbers that it kills them, Hatchery manager Kari Duncan said. Divers working for the service have been picking up the endangered shellfish and packing them in special containers to be trucked to this town along the Virginia line, Duncan said. In the pond, the mussels are segregated in special plastic racks Erovided to the service by Chi Chi's ic, a restaurant chain based in Louisville, Ky. A special shed was installed to disinfect boots and equipment workers will use at the pond. Jan Rowan, fishery biologist with the agency in Hadley, said the transfer would continue as long as the Ohio River remained warm enough to dive in, probably through mid-October.

The exact number of mussels that will be moved cannot be known. So as a birthday gift, she paid $400 to a private agency to find Vince Scimone.

The agency apparently used Social Security, because a letter from Tony Scimone arrived at the family's home from that agency, and the family agreed to allow information on their whereabouts to be given to him. Social Security handled 55,000 letter-forwarding requests last year for a variety of purposes, ranging from people trying to find beneficia to marry Robert Novelli. Novelli, now 48, knew some of what his stepson was feeling. He had learned at the age of 26 that he was adopted and had met his birth father, but their relationship fizzled. He and Vince say they are close.

They both work for Pittsburgh Mailing Assistance. Novelli welcomed Tony to stay with the family for a week. Vince said he planned to go to California next year. "What happened is in the past. Let it go.

This is the future," Robert Novelli said. Staff writer EUen M. Perlmutter contributed to this report. ries to others looking for a missing child, parent or sibling. The agency can handle such requests without a private firm at no charge for humanitarian reasons, or $3 for requests aimed at uniting missing people with money.

Vince Scimone's mom and step-dad, who were married in 1981, shared his happiness. Linda Novelli, now 44, long ago forgave her ex-husband. At the time he left them, she said, "I had so much hatred in me, but I knew I had to go on." She recalled that her son wanted a dad so badly that once, as a young child, he asked a priest to be his father. He encouraged his mother CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING late Clarence E.
