PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE THURSDAY, AUGUST 17, 1995 C-7 TELEVISION RADIO WQED to expand children's and family programming it" iiu i. hi mm i i Km jt if A )ch While other Pittsburgh stations are getting ready to roll out reruns of "Seinfeld" or usher "Oprah" across the dial, WQED is playing to its strengths: children's and family programming. That means Big Bird, Barney, Mister Rogers and a dolled-up dog on a promising new series called "Wishbone." Come October, WQED will air children's shows weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Saturday mornings for five hours starting at 7 a.m.; Sundays from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and during a new family block Sundays from 7 to 9 p.m.

Chris Fennimore, WQED program director, who remembers watching "The Wonderful World of Disney" Sunday nights as a child, says of his Sunday lineup, "Here's two hours a week, at least, where families could sit down with children ranging in age from 4 or 5 up to teen-agers and get a kick out of all the shows or just one." On Sundays, 'QED will offer "Ghostwriter" at 7 p.m., a new series called "Wishbone" at 7:30 p.m. and "Nature" at 8. Fennimore predicts "Wishbone," featuring a family and (the real star) a Jack Russell terrier clad in costume, will be "the biggest hit in the fall." Every Sunday, the storyline will follow the dog, his family and a famous lit- "There was a time when we sort of gave up on Saturday morning, when there was so much competition, and there may be more with Disney" buying ABC, Fennimore says. "But that doesn't really exonerate us from our responsibility to children." "Mystery!" fans also may want to know it will air Thursday at 9 p.m. and Sunday at 11 p.m.

Changes at 'QED mean some shuffling at its sister station, WQEX. "Overall, we're trying to program channels 16 and 13 in a much more cohesive way," Fennimore says. "We think of ourselves now as one total programming service." So, as WQED tilts toward family shows, what does that mean for WQEX? That it's still the home of quirky comedies, dusty but beloved soaps, how-to programs and local shows such as "CullenDevlin." Jim Wiener, operations and program manager, likes to think of WQEX as a "PBS independent." Among the changes on 'QEX: The addition of an "imported soap hour" weekdays at 4 p.m., with a different drama each day. From Monday through Friday, the lineup will be: "Poldark," "Flambards," "Duchess of Duke Street" (which also will air Monday at 9 p.m.), "Love Hurts" and "Trainer." And from October through year's end, 'Yes, Minister" will air weekdays from 5 to 6 p.m. The station also will run double episodes of comedies from 7 to 8 p.m.

weekdays. Although the Thursday hole has yet to be plugged, the shows for Monday through Wednesday and Friday are, in order "Chef," "Mr. Bean" (a one-time HBO series with Rowan Atkinson from "Four Weddings and a "Mulberry" and "Keeping Up Appearances." Friday nights at 8, a comedy about three retirees in the country titled "Last of the Summer Wine" will appear, followed by "Are You Being Served?" Weeknights, "The Honeymoon-ers" is moving to 11:30 p.m., and "The Red Green Show" will air at 11. Wiener describes the latter as "a Canadian comedy, the Great White North meets 'Home done out of Ontario." On Saturday and Sunday, WQEX will program blocks of news-public affairs shows from noon to 4 p.m. "Polka Celebration" will air Sunday at 4:30 p.m., with those Lawrence Welk bubbles drifting in at 5 p.m.

During the month of October, the station will air a four-part series called "A Question of Equality," which Wiener calls a gay and lesbian version of "Eyes on the Prize," which tracked the civil-rights movement. Installments will run on Sundays at 10 p.m. from Oct. 8-29. TVRADIO NOTES 'SMU digs deep for cast members From staff and wire reports Faced with having to rebuild again, "Saturday Night Live" creator and executive producer Lome Michaels has decided to mine old, albeit successful, territory for next season's cast members.

NBC recently announced that Will Ferrell and Cheri Oteri, unknowns to TV audiences, will join the cast of the ailing "SNL" this fall. Both recently were members of the Groundlings, a Los Angeles-based comedy troupe that also served as a launching pad for former "SNL" cast standouts Laraine Newman, Phil Hartman and Jon Lovitz. Also added to the cast: Nancy Walls and David Koechner, both alums of Second City Northwest. The four join last season's holdovers Norm McDonald and Mark McKinney, the only confirmed cast members for the coming season. "SNL" is coming off of one of the most troublesome years in its 20-year history.

Michaels has vowed to make major repairs. ON THE MOVE: A bunch of reassignments have been made at CBS News, effective this fall: Barry Petersen, London-based correspondent, heads to Tokyo, replacing James Hattori, who goes to New York; Vicki Maybrey, the Dallas-based newcomer who distinguished herself at Waco, Texas, goes to London. BARBARA VAMCHERI PITTSBURGH PICTURE erary work intended to encourage children to read the classics. "Austin City Limits," now seen Sundays, will move into a week-night rotation Fennimore is calling "Music Till Midnight." Monday through Thursday at 11 p.m., 'QED will focus on jazz, pop music, country western and nostalgia, with that last category embracing everything from Glenn Miller to Nelson Eddy. On Saturdays from 7 a.m.

to noon, the lineup will be: "Pappy-land," "Kidsongs," "Sesame Street," "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," "Barney and Friends," "Lambchop's Playalong," "Shining Time Station," "Reading Rainbow" and "Storytime." Four hours of cooking snows will follow, and then three of how-to programming. Lome Michaels Picks new "SNL" cast members TITLE CHANGE: ABC has changed the title of its upcoming fall show, "Wilde Again," to "The Naked Truth," even though it already has been promoted on-air with the old title. It will air Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. KIDS IN THE HALL: WDVE's Michele Michaels and Dani Coates will file live reports from the opening festivities for the new Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Coates will be there Aug.

Linda Bloodworth-Thomason and Harry Thomason have made a deal with the SpielbergKatzenberg Geffen troika to combine the TV couple's Mozark Productions with the big three's new studio, DreamWorks. It's a combination of network resources: Mozark has a production deal with CBS; DreamWorks has one with ABC or at least it does if the Disney deal doesn't get in the way. What's it all mean, besides a lot of money changing hands? "It means DreamWorks is a partner with us in the CBS deal," says Harry Thomason, "and it also means we have an entry into ABC.

And this gives Linda a chance to do movies. She may decide to work on a screenplay before she does any pilots."
