Humberlink service at Barton Bus-rail link 'A new concept' Bridge viewing area for a year has been there for a month Last week it dealt with about 2000 queries mostly from English tourists about 200 foreign visitors and between 300 and 400 local people "Most of the inquiries are about the Bridge and what sort of walks there are in the area and the places to visit" said Mr John Sunley supervisor FAIR AMOUNT "But we do get a fair amount of inquiries about toilets and there any down here except mi the playing fields or in Hessle square which is a good walk The lack of facilities has caused not a little distress to Mrs Elizabeth Gosling whose home in ClifT Road is closest to the Bridge She used to allow elderly people in need into her home until one Sunday when her hospitality was abused Now she lets no one in but desperation still leads people into her garden HESSLE residents greeted the opening of the Humber Bridge with cautious optimism and a certain grudging pride There was little sign of an excited rush to the foreshore to watch the first vehicles cross yesterday and several residents said they would wait for the ceremonial opening by the Queen Some shops which are normally closed all day or for a halfday on Wednesday were open in the hope of getting extra trade Fruiterer Mr Barry Thompson is among those who are optimistic (torn a commercial point of view about the effect the Bridge may have on the town He opened a shop in Preston-gate 10 months ago because of his belief that the Bridge would bring more custom "I think people will come from the Barton side and I years old are waiting' to take the long walk Mrs Dora Ballam of 98 Seaton Road Hessle was expecting to be driven across last night by her son-in-law Mr John KeaL who lives in Barton The tourist authority Humberside County Council has been planning public transport connections over the Bridge And yesterday seven years of talks with British Rail EYMS and the Lincolnshire Road Car Company came to fruition when Coun Mrs Stephenson opened the interchange NEW STATION The county council has financed tge bus-rail interchange which provides a single platform and a bus and coach park at Barton with help from Glanford Borough CounciL A new station at New Holland has also been built Humberlink will provide a frequent service between both banks allowing bus passengers from Hull to reach Scunthorpe in one hour and 10 minutes in a service jointly operated by EYMS and the Lincolnshire Road Car Company whose buses will now be seen in Hull Passengers from Hull to Grimsby and Cleethorpes
