rlTTSlil IIGII POST-GAZEVTL: Aug. 17, 1981 23 Chall enge of Governor's School 4 if. i creative drama consultant Ed Lilley and retired head of the CMU art department, Wesley Mills. Last year's budget allowed for 328 students. In 1981, more than 2,000 students auditioned for the 250 scholarships.

For a time this year, the future of the Governor's School looked dim. But the PDE managed to advance $250,000 in time to notify winners, secure staff and crank up the program for its July 12 opening. "Due to cutbacks, we have 20 fewer bodies on staff," Gatty says, "but we can't complain. We're alive. That's a tribute to the kind of job we're doing." Cutbacks this year also meant fewer guest artists and fewer field trips.

And the Title IV-C federal grant that has enabled handicapped students to attend PGSA has run its limit. Next year's program still is in the minds of PDE planners. While North and South Carolina, New York and Connecticut are among the few states that offer similar arts programs for talented youth, Gatty says the federal Office of Special Education, finds the Pennsylvania Governor's School unique because it combines all the arts in a residential program for both handicapped and non-handicapped, and includes leadership and career training. At Bucknell, students and staff alike find benefits in learning with and from the handicapped "govies," and the PGSA tries to allow blind and deaf students to pursue their talents as thoroughly as the non-handicapped. The Moog Synthesizer has a Braille chart; there's a tandem bike so the blind students can get more exercise; sensitivity and Braille workshops are given to (Continued from Page 17) Esposito.

"Here, everyone has such good ideas." "Here, we're accepted and allowed to be ourselves," says Lori Freedman, a dance majortheater elective from Monroeville. "We don't have to be jocks or in cliques. We're appreciated for what we are. We don't mind making mistakes, because everybody does, and then gets up and tries again," The program is geared to impress these youngsters with the realities of making one's living in the arts. "We call it, 'Scaring Them Straight in the Arts'," says Arthur Gatty, director of the Governor's School since its first session in 1973.

Gatty, a former music educator in Forest Hills, says this year the program placed an even heavier emphasis on career education than in earlier years. Students heard the bad news mixed with the good from visiting artists such as Douglas Pickering, a sculptor and teacher at Carnegie-Mellon University; Barbara Sandanato, former prima ballerina with the Pennsylvania Ballet Com- fany and now a staff member at the hiladelphia College of Performing Arts; Clyde Hare, a professional freelance photographer; Kevin Bacon, mer PGSA student with recent successes on Broadway, in TV and films; Lucy Spiegal, a writer and research specialist from "60 Jan Eckman, of the William Morris Agency in New York City; and Bernard Goldberg, principal flutist with the Pittsburgh Symphony. PGSA's own staff includes artist-teachers such as dancer Alexi Yuden-ich, actress and writer Glory Van Scott, George Creegan and Crow. contribution has been that he "creates good will." Creegan, a portly man who doesn't sign his name to his creations, has designed all the characters made by the Creegan Co. since it started 22 years ago.

But George Creegan is not so much a promoter or businessman as he is an educator. He has written a handbook for puppetry that has been in use for more than 10 years. And there is his daily television show. "We don't need more than this," Creegan says as he leans back, rubbing his belly. "Besides, I want to be a big face in a little market." "I think we are going to get high ratings this summer.

Within the last three years we beat Phil Donahue and Mike Douglas." TV puppeteer makes learning part of the fun By the time they're 17, children have spent 5,000 more hours in front of TV sets than they have in school. "We've got to turn some of these hours into something meaningful," puppeteer George Cree-gan says. "My goal is to take a few hours and make it something nourishing and valuable. "My TV show I'Creegan and on Channel 9 in Steubenville, Ohio is an awareness show. I want to make children aware of what's around them.

It's education in a fun format." Creegan writes every script for his show. The format involves video-taped field trips to museums and landmarks, interspersed with cartoons. The children's reactions let him know how he's doing. "We asked kids to send us letters about the show and we got 70 in one week." In shopping centers, children rush up to his bigger-than-life-size marketing characters without hesitation to put their arms around them. Baron von Bird, PPG Peacock, Mr.

Dynamite, Sparkplug and other animated characters are treated like old friends. "And when we're setting up a display, a crowd gathers and the oohs and ahhs tell a lot," he adds. Creegan, who is also working on his Ph.D. in educational communications at the University of Pittsburgh, recently completed a videotape designed to ease children's fear of hospitals. It centers on the Crow, his popular sidekick, who has a tonsillectomy.

A national hospital organization is considering it for distribution. George Creegan started back in "the late '50s" with a show on Air Force Television in Germany. "At that time I was just a puppeteer and the studio wanted me to do a children's show. There was a big market for that because many of the officers' wives were there with kids. It worked very well," Creegan said.

He left the Air Force in the "early '60s" and went to Columbia University in New York. To support himself, he and his wife, JoAnn, traveled around to fairs and similar events with his puppets. He eventually worked as an assistant puppeteer on "Howdy Doody." Then he saw Steubenville, Ohio. "My wife is from there and we went to visit her folks. While we were there we said, 'Hey, why not raise our kids We didn't move back to New York." His simple tastes are reflected in his business, as well as his lifestyle.

"My business is wholly owned and we take up a half a block on the main street of downtown Steubenville. My wife and my daughter he has two others and my son do a lot of work." Puppetry as a sales device is a booming business, he finds. This Christmas, he will have "traffic builder" displays featuring his characters at 15 malls throughout Western Pennsylvania. He has also animated showrooms in Dallas, Miami, Los Angeles and Atlanta. Creegan developed Sparkplug, a 9-foot-tall mascot who looks just like his name, for Auto Parts of Carrick.

"He has been a very effective sales tool," sav' re owner Steve Luncinski. "He's probably the bifcr sparkplug in the world and if he's handing ou, i.yers or something, people really pay attention." Sparkplug has been around for two years and cost $1,100. Luncinski says Sparkplug biggest sighted students. Classes in sign languages are offered as a full elective course, and are taught by deaf students as well as staff interpreters. Hearing students are so interested in learning to communicate with the deaf that 35 of them this year took this class instead of concentrating on another art area.

"The handicapped kids just happen to be different," says Eric Harrison, a violin majorsign elective from Greens-burg, "and that's how they're treated. We just have to learn to communicate in a different way." Eric chose his elective in sign language because he knows some deaf persons at home, and because he feels he should know as many ways to communicate in the music profession as possible. He may study music therapy. Gerry Hare will be a junior at Hampton High School. He is a photography majorart elective whose work has been published in local newspapers, the Columbus Monthly and National Geographic.

He patiently and gently describes the physical handicaps from birth defects that slow his walking to a limp and Erolong his speech. With the same ease, discusses his 8 mm. works-in-progress and the sense of responsibility he feels in being able to help his family, particularly his father, free-lance photographer Clyde Hare. Gerry's excitement at being able to work long hours solving problems of light and shadow, design and depth of field, is echoed in the comments of all the students who take time to talk with a reporter. Many just want to be back at the easel, or piano or barre.

Chamber groups concentrate intensely on each other and their reactions to playing all morning. Typewriters click compulsively, as if challenged to a duel. "The hardest part so far," says Mt. Lebanon ceramicist Ian Lally, his hands camoflaged in a large revolving swirl of gray clay, "is the discipline of repeating an assignment. Last week we had to do six bowls that were identical.

This week we're doing four types of lids." Students work a full morning at their major, spend the afternoon studying their electives, and are urged to spend two hours daily in recreation. Many ask to return to work instead, and in the evning they again work on their major. "There's a lot of 8 to 8 work," says Gatty. As the five weeks progress, so do the hours at the Art Barn, on stage, and in quiet corners where poetry and prose are "tried out" on responsive critics and friends. "We give them a well-planned schedule because we don't want them to burn out," Gatty says, "but they just don't want to quit.

This year's group is days ahead of where we were last year, and the staff has a running gag that in a few years, we won't even have to show up." Dr. P. J. Steincrohn For Mr. You are not alone many are tired of hearing of the dangers of high cholesterol levels in the blood.

Yet, when there are new developments, I believe you should be aware of our changes in thinking. For example, most doctors agree that elevated cholesterol levels are associated with increased risk of heart attack. For example, the Framingham study, developed over at least a 20-year period, indicates that if your total cholesterol is 260 or thereabouts, you have three times the risk of having a heart attack, compared with the patient whose count is under 195. And the risk becomes five times greater if the cholesterol is over 310. What's new? The total cholesterol count isn't the sole risk.

Patients who have a form of cholesterol known as high density lipoprotein (HDL) have a decreased risk of heart attack. Therefore, ask your doctor about your HDL levels, Mr. M. Also, your LDL low density lipoprotein levels, which increase the likelihood of heart attack. example that even stubborn and "untreata-ble" illness may improve.

Dear Dr. Steincrohn: Several years ago my neck had become so painful I was afraid I would have to give up driving a car. I was continually uncomfortable, no matter what I was, doing even during ordinary conversation. My doctor sent me for X-rays which revealed spurs on my cervical vertebrae. When aspirin and heat didn't help, an orthopedist prescribed traction.

So, for about an hour a day I "hung" from a device slipped over a closet door. I also had to stop sleeping on my stomach and use a cervipillow like a small bolster under my neck in place of a pillow. At first the traction made my neck feel worse. But within about three months I improved. I abandoned the traction almost entirely, though I still sleep with a roll in the back of my neck in place of a pillow.

When I travel, I rollup a bathtowel. I hope my experience helps others who suffer "pain in the neck." Mrs. L. Dear Dr. Steincrohn: Only a person with cervical arthritis and constant pain and stiffness recognizes the aptness of the description of some people as being a "pain in the neck." It's a miserable state.

Not bad enough to keep you home from work, but forever nagging discomfort wherever you are, or whatever you are doing. The pain never seems to leave one entirely. My doctor has sent me to an X-ray specialist who found that I have arthritic spurs on my neck vertebrae. He has prescribed the usual aspirin which dulls the pain somewhat. Also application of hot towels at night.

But there's really nothing else to do, is there? It has been so bad lately that I've had a few near accidents while driving because I couldn't turn my head sufficiently to some oncoming traffic. Is there anything else you can suggest? Mr. N. Dear Mr. I suggest consultation with -an orthopedist.

He may devise some workable scheme of treatment that will bring at least some relief. The following letter is an 600 Legals 800 Legals 800 Legals 600 Legals 800 Legals 800 Legals 800 Legals HAROLD A. Gold; BajKm which was oroanized under! FRANK E. Yourick. the Professional Corporation! J.
