-POST-GAZETTE: Nov. 6, 1984 ObituariesWeather- MUM 1 School drug funds may be used for staff W.L. Hurst, ex-mayor of Irwin 4 'hi 2 William L. Hurst, 93, former mayor of Irwin and a retired investigator for the state, died Monday in Boldoc Health Care Center, Irwin. He was a councilman in Irwin IlllliiiSf 'Mil JT II ft-l John BealePosl-Gazelte Brian Boris, 3, son of Mr.

and Mrs. Wayne Boris, blows bubbles with a friend on his grandfather's porch inOverbrook. St. Francis Regional Alcohol Program and St. Francis Drug treatment program and five others are already licensed, Homer said it would be easier for the county to pay them directly.

Council member William Scho-field III of Shaler, and a former school board member there, said he didn't like Homer heading the Pittsburgh school program. He said Homer was not qualified for his job and had a criminal record. But the council's chairman, Herman Mitchell, said his group wanted to provide services to the 45,000 children in the district. "We aren't interested in the personalities here," he said. "How do you explain to a group of parents with kids in trouble that they are being advised by a fellow who, while a legislator whose job it was to create public law, breached the public trust?" Schofield asked.

Homer was convicted in 1975 of extortion and perjury on charges of shaking down to two McKees Rocks companies for $10,500 in political contributions, and later lying about it to a federal grand jury. "I don't know Mr. Schofield and it would be unreasonable for somebody who does not know me to question my ability," Homer said. He has maintained he is innocent of the charges. Homer said school officials had complimented him for the job he had done, and that he had attended a number of seminars as part of his preparation for the job.

By Donald I. Hammonds Post-Gazette Start Writer The Pittsburgh' school district may not get the $30,000 it needs for a drug and alcohol program but that's just the way Max Homer, director of special programs for the district, says he wanted it. Yesterday, the Drug and Alcohol Planning Council recommended that the Allegheny County Commissioners cancel the county contract with the school system and give money for the school's Chemical Abuse Program for Students to the agencies that will train staff for the The $30,000 dollars are federal funds passed down through state and county governments, Homer said. And the council makes recommendations on programs that use such funds, based on recommendations of Charles Peters, director of the county's mental healthmental retardation, drug and alchol abuse program. Had the council not taken the action Homer said he recommended, the city schools would have had to obtain a state Health Department license to receive the funds, Homer said.

Only after the license was obtained could the county give the district the $30,000. Fulfilling the licensing procedure would have meant a delay of up to a year in starting the program, Homer said. Training for the program is to begin later this month. Since the training agencies which include i from 1950 to 1954. He served as Irwin burgess from 1954 to 1959,, i when the title was changed to may- or, according to council president Jerry Vernail.

Mr. Hurst served as mayor from 1960 to 1965 and again from 1974 to 1977, Vernail said. Mr. Hurst was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Irwin. He officiated in Western Pennsylvania i for years in various sports, includ- 1 tag the first Westmoreland County High School basketball tournament.

He was a board member of the Irwin unit Of the Salvation Army. Survivors include his wife, Julia; a son, Joseph of Manor; two daugh- ters, Ruth Fabian of Hillsdale, and Florence Anthony of Manor; two stepsons, Richard and John Sabo of Irwin; a stepdaughter, Jean Smith of Irwin; 14 grandchil- dren; eight step-grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. Organs of Scott man, 19, donated gans could result in several trans-plant operations at Presbyterian-University over the next few days, but none were in process there last night, administrative assistant Ann Mathias said. McAuley's eyes were sent to the eye bank in Charleston, W.Va., Ohio Valley spokesman Paul Burig said. McAuley, of 241 Segar Road, died of head injuries at Ohio Valley Medical Center after a Jeep in which he was a passenger Theodore Garman, 20, of 4720 Wallingford Squirrel Hill, remained in serious condition yesterday with chest injuries at Ohio Valley. Both men were passengers in a Cherokee Jeep driven by Susan Trice, 21, of Manassas, W.

Va. Trice was charged with drunken driving in the crash at about 11 p.m. on Route 67 near campus. A third passenger, Roger Brown, 20, of 3020 May Castle Shannon, was treated at Wheeling Hospital. The death of a 19-year-old Scott man, who was fatally injured Friday in a car crash near Bethany, W.Va., will bring new hope to transplant operation candidates here.

Yesterday doctors from Presbyterian-University Hospital, including liver transplant pioneer Thomas Starzl, went to Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling, W.Va., to remove David McAuley's heart, kidneys, liver and eyes, a hospital spokesman said. He had been declared brain dead Sunday. The harvesting of McAuley's or Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the First Presbyterian Church of Irwin. Burial will be in Irwin Union Cemetery.
