Manager Chuck Tanner said he made the move because the Pirates play only five games In the next eight days, eliminating the need for a fifth starter. Tanner said Tunnell's next start will be May 7, when the Pirates play the San Francisco Giants at Three Rivers Stadium.

Tunnell (0-1) has a 3.27 earned-run average. Rookie Mike Bieiecki (1-1) will remain in the rotation. Me is scheduled to pitch Sunday against the Met3 in New York Catcher Tony Pena did not play last night because of what Tanner called "Bumps and bruises." The Bucs play an exhibition game tonight against their Class A Carolina League farm club In Prince William, Va. The Pirates will use minor league pitchers Chris Ritter, Todd Hansen and Ernesto Santana. Prince William, managed by former Pirate catcher Ed OH, will start Robby Russell.

Spirit: Coach John Kowalski was not mentioned when The Baltimore Sun recently conducted an "Informal" survey of all active Major Indoor Soccer League general managers and coaches to pick the best coach ever in the 7-year-old league. Kowalski, who has coached the Spirit four years, is one of only four MISL coaches with 100 or more career victories (119-109).
