Why anybody in these last years of the teenth century could write such sense as the following that we copied in The True Republican from the DeKalb Review and entitled Astonishing The Universalist minister at the county seat preached on Religious Indifference of Svon last Sunday If as theUniversalists say everybody is going to be saved what is the being otherwise than Of course this was intended as a fling ai me universalists but its author only succeeded in revealing his own ignor ance and moral stupidity What is salvation but moral perfection and how can you attain unto that perfection without personal effort without faith and repentence and growing in grace? Uni vers alists believe that everybody is going to be saved but in that faith are included all the means of salvation They believe that all will be saved be cause they believe that all will repent and seek salvation so they are very ear nest in inducing men to repent and seek salvation Now here is this DeKalb editor Thsv believe he will be saved Of course it will take time for he is very opaque and ordinary light rays may not reach nis soul but since the discovery of the rays we know that very small things can be found in very dense darkness So be hopeful brother you will be something in eternity but you had better begin to work up right away for evidently you have a long road before That CLOSE CALL OR ED BEACH COAL! Swedish American Without Apparent Cause Plunges a Knife Into His Heart With atal Effect A Woman Drowns Herself In a Cistern DeKalb has been having a strange and terrible epidemic That city like most other cities of its size has gone' for many years without a single case of sui cide But this winter DeKalb has suff ered from what seems to be an epidemic of suicides There have been no less than thirteen attempts at self destruct ion there since Christmas it is said and seven people have been killed The first was the case of Harry Bow ers who killed himself and wife The latest two we have not before recorded An attempt at suicide was made week Wednesday by a innish woman who tried to smother herself with pil lows In this she was unsuccessful but on Saturday following she was fmind arowned in a cistern The latest suicide was committed Thursday night of this week when John Beckstrom a well known and res pected Swedish American citizen killed himself He went to bed early in the evening about 8 and an hour later when the family were ready to he was found lying in bed soaked in his own blood and dead He had plunged a knife into his breast No cause for the deed is known Mr Beckstrom had been a resident of DeKalb for many years He was about 50 years of age I of good habits possessed of considera ble property and was in good health so far as known He has a daughter who is a public school teacher These suicides have been committed by people in most all conditions of life and under different circumstances and there seems to be no accounting for them except on the hypothesis that sui cides are contagious like some diseases Dexter Sackett THE MASONIC SCHOOL INSTRUCT ION A GREAT SUCCESS Al Total Attendance During The Three A ays or Over Six The Grand Master and Others High In
