5U11, hardly anyone besides those intimately involved in the film-making process really understands people do. Last year, four men were announced as winners for the sound of "Raiders of the Lost Bill Varney, Steve Maslow, Gregg Landaker, Roy Charman. Each performed different functions. Varney supervised all re-recording, including dialogue. Maslow handled the music and Landaker did the sound effects- Charman recorded the sound on the set as Steven Spielberg directed the film.

"Steve, Gregg and I are involved in the final process of a film," Varney says. "For me, it's the most exciting time of -all What we do can determine the effectiveness of the movie." Varney works amid a mass of sophisticated gadgetry at the Goldwyn Sound Facility for the Warners Hollywood Studio. He can perform wonders, as with "Ordinary People." "When I got the sound track, it was literally unusable," said Varney. "In the end, 98 to 99 percent of the dialogue was from the original track. That was the highlight of my career.

I used all the magic tricks I could think, of to preserve the original." Like most soundmen, he abhors dubbing actors reciting dialogue on a soundproof stage after they have performed their parts f6r the camera. "Very seldom do you get the same quality, the same he argues. Most European films are totally dubbed after filming, and he scorns the sound as coming from "velvet boxes." "It was so rich and full and powerful that it was difficult to combine the other elements. "The toughest part was the truck chase. Musical notes: Pittsburgh's Roy Goldberg is currently producing and recording original material in a major recording studio in New York. He calls it "hi-tech pop with jazz influences." Roy has enlisted a handful of New York's top studio musicians, and sought out former Pittsburgher Eric Kloss for a guest soloist spot. Besides being composer, arranger, singer, guitarist and keyboardist on the album, Roy is also producing it "because I know the material best, I work real cheap and I have an excellent artist-producer relationship." Curtain lines: Pearl Bailey turns 65 today. Most Memorable Movie Scene No. 90: Win Fanning, who resides a couple of desks away, submits this memory.

"When I was in grammar school the weekly meeting in the assembly hall was devoted once a month to the showing of a motion picture all silents, of course, as this was more than half a century ago. Most of my favorite films starred Rin Tin Tin, the beautiful, fearless shepherd dog, but the scene that remains most vividly in my memory is from "The Black Pirate." It was a pioneer Technicolor epic starring Douglas Fairbanks Sr. as a nobleman-turned-buccaneer after meeting with foul play at the hands of some low-lifes. During an encounter with another ship, our hero looked down from the top of the mainmast and spied a damsel in distress (Billie Dove) amidst a battle royal going on on the deck below. He drew his dagger and plunged it into the topmost sail, lowering himself to the next yardarm as the knife sliced through the cloth.

He repeated this thrilling maneuver through sail after sail until finally reaching the deck. Years later I read that the feat had been accomplished with the aid of support wires. But even this revelation cannot diminish the excitement and wonder felt by an 8-year-old in the days when an image on the silver screen spelled magic." "Price" for the Public: Arthur Miller's "The Price" has replaced "The Show-Off" as the season's final production of the Pittsburgh Public Theater. "The production rights for 'The Show-Off nave been withdrawn nationally," according to Dennis A. Babcock, managing director.

"We are pleased that we will have an important Arthur Miller play in this season devoted to American authors," said Larry Arrick, artistic director. Harold Gary, who won the Outer Circle Critics Award and Variety's New York Drama Poll for the role he originated in the 1968 Broadway production, will repeat his performance for the Public Theater. The show runs May 12 through June 26. It's the second schedule change this season for the Public. Eugene O'Neill's "Long Day's Journey Into Night" had been scheduled to open tomorrow, but was replaced by Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" Coming attractions: "Flashdance," the Paramount film set in Pittsburgh, will have its local premiere on April 15.

Advance word from the screening room is good. The film has drawn an rating. To tide you over until the next Indiana Jones adventure, Paramount will re-issue "Raiders of the Lost Ark," starting April 29. The Disney Company's ambitious effort to make a high-class thriller, Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes," also opens April 29. On the town: Outstanding pianist Frank Cunimondo is working on a plan to add another jazz outlet to Pittsburgh nightlife Former Holiday House owner Bert Sokol and wife Patti have sold their Monroeville house and will be moving to Florida on April 23.

Their son John was married last Saturday. DiCesare-Engler Productions is changing from a general-admission to a reserved-seat policy on its Stanley Showcase concerts. Impertinent opinions: With all the publicity about the late Frances Farmer and with Jessica Lange's Oscar nomination, I'm surprised the movie "Frances" attracted such sparse audiences. He sometimes suffers when he watches his movies in neighborhood theaters. His months of exacting work can be ruined by poor projection, and bad sound amplification.

Year of Living Dangerously" gave up the ghost, despite MGM's best efforts to sustain it. The movie is all atmosphere and no characters or story. Fitting revenge: President Reagan's telegram to John Huston was edited out of CBS' telecast pf the American Film Institute tribute to the veteran director. Reagan's defense speech delayed the start of the two-hour special by more than 35 minutes. There's no program all year that I enjoy more than these AFI Life Achievement Award shows.

On stage: Not many student productions can boast the services of four Tony Award winners. The Carnegie-Mellon University staging of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Mikado," opening April 14, will have sets by illustrator Edward Gorey, a Tony winner for Broadway's "Dracula." Lighting director is Roger Morgan, Tony winner for "Crucifer of Blood." John Wulp, who won a Tony as producer of "Dracula," is a consultant on the production. The director is Mel Shapiro, a Tony Award winner for "Two Gentlemen of Verona." Closed circuit: An older reader wants to know why "Gandhi" isn't playing weekday matinees in the east suburbs. "A lot of older people don't like to be out on the road after 1 1 p.m. when it ends, and they would like to go in the afternoon," he said.

James Coco has joined Jason Robards and Colleen Dewhurst in the all-star revival of "You Can't Take It With You," which the Post-Gazette theater holiday group will see on Broadway in April.
