There has been some talk in Hollywood about the networks offering entirely new material during the hot months, although the total elimination of reruns is probably still a long way off. Several factors recommend August as a proving ground for experimental concepts.

Viewing levels are lower, meaning the networks have less to lose by programming such shows at this time. Shows in August can gear up the audience for the new season that is about to begin. If programs do well, they can be made ready for insertion into the schedule at midseason, or earlier if necessary. ABC's experience with "Call to Glory," on the other band, points up the potential dangers of such scheduling. In August when there was little other original programming to watch, the show got big ratings.

In September, when new episodes of all shows were available, "Call to Glory" faded fast. Still, television could be well served by having a reasonably noncompetitive period in which to try out new concepts. tent daily news operation and Sroducers. Program director Chris fitting remains the man in charge of KD's news department a job he assumed when former news director Gary Froseth was fired last year. Ava Gardner will join Jason Ro-bards, Don Johnson and Cybill Shepherd in next season's four-hour miniseries adaptation for NBC of William Faulkner's "The Long Hot Summer." Robert Stack and bis wife, Rosemarie, will serve as hosts of the daily program "It's a Great Life," part of the Inday package of daytime shows starting this fall, to be seen locally on WPGH-TV.

Showtime is the latest network to join the craze of turning drama into a contest Starting in July, the pay-cable channel will air an original film called "Murder in Space," with Wilford Brimley, Martin Balsam and Arthur Hill. Here's the catch: The final half-hour of the drama will not be shown. Viewers will be asked to solve the mystery with the incentive of $60,000 in cash and prizes for the correct answers. Not until September will viewers get to see the movie complete with ending. Saturday's premiere cablecast of a Huey Lewis and the News concert on Showtime will be simulcast in stereo on WDVE-FM.

Ebersol, who has decided to leave the show. His replacement has not yet been named, nor have the usual yearly cast changes been announced. Remember Angel Martin, the quirky recurring character from the old "Rockford Files" series? In an unusual move, Angel portrayed by Stuart Margolin is coming back to television on a different series. He'll be a regular character on NBC's "Riptide In Sunday's battle of made-for-TV movies, "Malice in Wonderland," a tale about Hollywood gossip queens Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons, got a bigger audience than the first part of ABC's true-life crime drama, "A Death in California." But both were bested in the Nielsen ratings by the network premiere on NBC of Sylvester Stallone's theatrical hit ''First Blood." NBC won the network ratings race, and "The Cosby Show" was the most-viewed program for the fifth consecutive week. Just how much does Cosby's success mean monetarily to NBC? According to Broadcasting magazine, a 30-second spot on the show next season is expected to sell for more than $200,000, among the highest rates in network television.

This By Ron Weiskind Post-Gazette Staff Writer August, a month heretofore distinguished mostly by heat, humidity and torpor, is starting to become a period of experimentation on the part of the television networks. In 1984, you may recall, ABC ran the dramatic series "Call to Glory" in August, capitalizing on the network's just-concluded coverage of the Summer Olympics. The series did so well that ABC put it on the fall schedule. CBS last August gave a limited run to an innovative show called "The Comedy Zone." NBC tried out another in its long-running series of short-lived prime-time news magazine formats, "Summer Sunday U.S.A." Similar gambits are planned by the networks this August For exam- CBS will give limited runs to our new series, including a new magazine show. Another of these programs, "Hometown," has already been added to the network's fall schedule.

At NBC, the latest news magazine attempt will debut in August This one's called "America's Almanac" and will be hosted by Roger Mudd and Connie Chung. The show will be seen monthly until January, when it will be incorporated into the weekly schedule. The network also plans to air a live, one-hour "Today Show" special in prime time on Aug. 26. Obviously, the networks no longer season, the magazine said, a spot on "Cosby" cost $115,000.
