scale at less than the same weight of dressed beef or pork An insurance man in a recent address at a merchants association meeting in the west called attention to the fact that the annual fire loss in the United Stales Is about $150000000 In ten years enough property goes up in smoke to pay the national debt The greater part of this immense loss is due to carelessness In other words with proper foresight and cars upon the part of everybody in the United States the country would be rich er by $150000000 every year Kansas CftiTto" have the largest cot ton mill In the world with 500000 spind les and 12000 looms buildings will be 1450 in length by 750 in width three stories high and the total area of the ground covered by the plant will be 2000 acres To conduct this immense mill will require 4800 operatives with a pay roll of $2450000 a year More than $3000 000 capital has already been subscribed to the enterprise Tests have been made to determine the practicability of using oil as fuel on lake steamer instead of coal and the claim is made that a great saving of cargo space will be effected It Is claimed that three barrels of crude petroleum weighing 300 pounds will give the same amount of heat as a ton of coal and that the heat obtained from oil is found to be practi cally unlimited A great gain may be effected also in its use by the elimination of much of ths annoying smoke Incident to the use of coaL Possibly the recent discoveries of vast supplies of crude oil may mean great deal In the fuel prob lem of the world The frequency with which supreme courts recently have declared void laws enacted by the legislature should serve to sober the men who aspire to the po sition of lawmakers at the hands of the people Great inconvenience and heavy loss of money follows people's good And yet thia same people will deliberately vote money lavishly into ordinary private pockets out of their own for it must be apparent to nil that every dollar paid an official through fees above a fair salary is so much token from the public treasury and so much added to the burden of the tax payers The Populists have practically dissolved as a party One clement has gone Into the straight Democratic ranks and the other has joined tho Republicans A few years ago the Kansas leaders were writing magazine articles to riiow hnw their movement was to sweep the coun try and engulf the old organizations But a revival of business has ft the new party without an excuse for its existence and it dissolves under a natural law and from a position of control in a half dozen large states it gives up the fight with scarcely a member of Congress a state officer or a legislator to its credit One good thing illustrated by the party is that men may change th lr par ty relations promptly when they get tired of them and find new affiliations There is a good deal of independence in the American citizen after all and the polit ical movement that is to command his permanent support must command his re spect There Is nothing sacred about party ties that cannot be ignored at the demand of patriotism and good govern ment An interesting suit is in progress in the United States court at Indianapolis in volving the character of the Chicago Board of Trade The board brought uit against an Indianapolis firm of brokers for stealing its quotations for use in bucket shops The defendants make the counter charge that the Chicago board Itself Is operating a bucket shop on an extensive scale in violation of law and that it has no light to the protection of the court A decision of the United States court is also quoted to the effect that bucket shops are the offspring of the Chicago Board of Trade and kindred organizations to which they look for mis tuuance and life and that they can only be effectually suppressed by striking at the rout of the evil Tho federal court is again called upon to define the exact status of the Chicago Board of Trade and show wherein it differs from a bucket shop it it differs at all If its status as a legitimate trade organization is sus tained it follows that it has the right to control its quotations and limit their use to with the utmost familiarity and de mands the time of day The athlete walks the halls of learning disparts him self in the society of the most refined la dles and is the recipient of Mattering attention on every hand The pale spin dle legged collegian Is no longer the fa vorite with young American girls They demand chest measurement and a plent eous display of biceps and calves All physical strictly muscular prowess and skill never had such appre ciation and praise as now The man who thraahus the fellow who offers on insult to himself or to a woman is let off with the lightest reproof of the law if the courts notice the matter at all while he is surs of the warm commendation of the public This is the way It works among the people generally Now look at the mani festation of the same spirit 'by the gov ernment We are strengthening and for tifying the republic on the physical side as never before We are training armies and building nuvivs to match the world We me spending hundreds but the people are willing to hear it told and they are an xious to right the wrong where there is wrong As Americans we should rejoice in all we have gained and especially in that freedom of discussion and action which us to advance continually to higher ideals as a people The praise and the reproof the rejoicing and the sorrowing that may find expression on the ourth may therefore be all proper enough since they all tend to bring us to a justor way an to a more perfect unity as a nation The highest measure of good government is that which insures the greatest pleasure and happiness to the people and the ourth is a good time to compare notes to the end that the right may be strengthened and the wrong avoided bet every citizen reflect on how much he owes to our beneficent form of
