AND MOB Girl at Gilman Dies rom a Criminal Two Killed and Two atally Wounded Gilmnu Aug 27 (Special) Two men are dead and two mortally wounded as a result of the resistance to arrest of Dr Mie Charlotte Wright on a charge of com mitting a criminal operation on the per son of Dessle Salter a girl sixteen years old of Leonard AUTOPSY HELD Sunday afternoon a corner's jury was empanelled to inquire into the cause of the death of Miss Salter The body was exhumed and an autopsy held The coro ner soon became convinced that enough testimony had been received to hold Mrs Wright for abortion WARRANT ISSUED A warrant was Issued by Police Magis trate Irelau and a constable with several deputies went to the lying in hos pital of Mrs Wright serve it MOB OLLOWS After demanding an entrance and re ceiving no response the othogrs kicked in the door and entered DEPUTY IS SHOT An inner door was opened slightly and a muzzle of a shotgun thrust out by some in mate of the house and a charge of buck shot emptied into the abdomen of Mike Ryan i RYAN DIES Ryan daggered out and was dead In 15 minutes The moo then went after their guns and tn a short time returned nrmod MORE DEPUTIES SWORN A large number were sworn in by Mayor Thompson as deputies to guard the house IRED THE HOUSE Repeated efforts were then made to set fire to the house and about 2:30 a they succeeded Mr OCCUPANTS SMOKED OUT When the flames and smoke became un bearable Mrs Wright and the man who lives with her by the name of John Meyers sneaked out into the dense shrubbery and underbrush that surrounds the house and Meyers fired and mortally wounded George Wlllougby and Peter Haner MYERS IS RIDDLED When it was nearly daylight Meyers was discovered coming out of a large ditch and the mob riddled him with bullets ANOTHER WOUNDED He fired wounding the brother of Mike Ryan slightly MRS WRIGHT OUND Mrs Wright was found near the house lying on a brush heap and she begged for her life THE WOMAN She had received a shot in the shoulder She was removed to the city hall about 5:30 this morning' THE MOB AGAIN The mob made another demonstration around the city ball trying to break the door down and mashing In the windows' Two shots were fired at Mrs Wright as she lay on a stretcher in the city hall but without hitting her HELD" WITHOUT BAIL The Inquest over the body of IVssie Salter completed Its Investigation this morning and held Mrs Wright to the 'grand jury without bail PRISONER REMOVED At noon today she was quietly put on a south bound train and taken to Paxton The jury Is still investigating the he had a patient for her He said Mrs Wright would not re ceive the Salter girl unless the request came by mail REMOVED THE BODY He said he did not know what the Salter girl was going to Mrs to be treated for said he had taken Miss Salter to Mrs in a buggy a week ago last Thursday night that be in company with Ray Salter a brother of the dead girl and Guy Humphrey an uncle of the deceased had gone in a wagon riday morning before daylight and hauled the body to Leonard BURIED IN BOX She had nothing but a blanket around her and did not have a coffin said he helped make a rough box in which she was buried DIED RHEUMATISM He said he supposed that the reason her parents did not get a coffin to bury her in was because the body was much swollen and in a very advanced state of decomposition He said that Mrs Wright had told him that the girl had' died of rheumatism of the heart A BOY Grob is a boy living a mile south of Leonard and is of respectable parents He seemed to be a very unwill ing witness answering questions guard edly The people of Gilman are sleeping tonight with a greater degree of security than they have for many years with the sure knowledge that this desperate place has been wiped out of existence Although it has cost dear In human life BEST CITIZENS SERVED The best citizens served on the consta posse and assisted in setting fire to the building by which Mrs Wright and her outlaw companion were smoked out like rats from a hole A GOOD WORK The desperado Myers met death by re sisting an officer and his principal Mrs Wright languishes behind the bars and the citizens feel that it was a good work A SMALL INSURRECTION The scene at the house last night when volley after volley of shots were ex changed by the armed citizens on the one hand and Myers and the Wright woman in the house and afterwards in the bushes resembled a small insurrection TEMPORARY HOSPITAL A temporary hospital was made of the residence of red Broadbent and the vic tims were carried from the scene of the conflict where they were treated by the surgeons KNOWN AT MELVIN The Salter family are well known at Melvin where they formerly resided and nave always oorne a gooa name REVOLUTION EELING The fact that they did not give the girl a Christian burial and kept her in an old stable before 'burial has caused a revolu tion of feelings toward them The girl was interred in one old blanket and a piece of old carpet and wearing only her underclothes The autopsy revealed that the uterus had been entirely removed probably to prevent detection by Mrs Wright IS DEAD Ulman Doctor I'xpirrt In Watseka Jail rom Her Wounds Gilman HL Aug Dr Mrs Charlotte Wright who was wounded in the shoulder while resisting arrestdied in the Watseka jail at 5 this evening shortly after her arm had been amputated She did not make any statement? bear ing on the ewe before she died Coroner Barnum with several witnesses from Gilman have gone to Watseka to hold an Inquest over her body DEEDED TO SON are buried in the lot MYERS' UNERAL The funeral ot John Myers the des perado wbo was killed Sunday night was held this afternoon' at Crescent City' where his abandoned wife had him taken yesterday THE Will Never Have Another Parade Equal to Tuesday PATRIOTIC AND PATHETIC Never to Be org ottrn Scenes Are Enacted in ront of the lie viewing Stand Chicago Aug 28 Along streets filled with a cheering multitude past towering buildings gay with the glow of stars and stripes through arches of honor beneath suspended banners and swinging portraits wof illustrious leaders 35000 members of tho Grand Army of the Republic marched today It was their greatest parade since that day In 1865 when ranks fresh from the triumphs of war they marched down Pennsylvania avenue In Washington with their faces turned toward home It was probably the last of the great parades upon which the members of the Grand Army will march on earth The average age of the veterans close upon the ave rage span of human life its ranks are thinning fast and its membership Is rap idly decreasing COOL BREEZE I The weather was all that could be de sired a cool breeze off Lake Michigan tempering the rays of the sun making the march of the old veterans endurable and pleasant Soldiers from every state in the union were in line and through out the line of parade 7000 posts had representations The parade which start ed at Randolph street and Michigan ave nue was about five hours passing a given point The line of march was short and from the start to tbe court of honor where it disbanded after passing in review be fore Commander in Chief Shaw it com passed twenty seven squares THE NOTABLES In the rrand stand erected down the slope of the Lake ront park near the Logan monument were gathered scores of officers who had won fame In the civil war and diplomats In the center box of the reviewing stand were Lieut Gen Nelson A Mlles representing President McKinley Commander in Chief Shaw Gen Joseph Wheeler Gen Dan iel Sickles Mayor Harrison of Chi cago and Harper To their left were Acting Governor Warder Speaker David Henderson of the house of represen tatives Bishop allows and Senator Shel by Cullom To their right Spanish Minister Duke with a party of friends stood as interesting spectators CHEER THE EAGLE The first cheers from the reviewing stand were given to the famous old War Eagle of the Wisconsin troop
