8D riday September 16 1994 YK MV College ootball Gannett Suburban Newspapers Iona begins title defense at Marist The MAAC champion Gaels look to repeat last 9 2 mark ByGregVenuto StaffWnter Iona College battled to get to the position it enjoys entering this season The Gaels will have to do more of the same to stay there Iona is coming off a best ever9 2 season in which the Gaels won the inaugural Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion ship in their first year on the Division I AA level quest to stay on top begins tomorrow as the Gaels face host Marist at 1:30 Marist (0 1) was beaten by Central Con necticut 24 22 in its season open er last Saturday know everybody will be coming after junior quarter back Tom Proudian said I like being on top We have that added confidence be cause we won a championship and we know we can do it If history has any bearing on the season opener then it will be a close contest according to se nior Vm Santeha of Yonkers has come down to the final seconds when played them the last three said Sante lia last MAAC defensive player of the year we have to do is stop their running game what they do best and people are writing that our defense is the question mark We lost all of our linebackers but I feel our defense is a ques tion lOth year coach Harold Crocker said the defense is an area of concern have a lot of young play ers on Crocker said have a good nucleus of play ers on offense and we have our top offensive lineman Emory Moody The offense is almost entirely Jntact The talent starts with Proudian who last season threwfor 3127 yards and 27 touch downs out of vaunted run and shoot The Gaels will alsowelcome back top tar get senior wide receiver Tim Silo The 6 foot 150 pound Silo made 47 catches for 832 yards and 12 touchdowns think our team will be very similar to last Crocker said put the ball in the air for a living like 1o see us run the ball a little better than we did in some Proudian who broke 12 school passing and offensive records last year expects the Red oxes to blitz often like to blitz and put pressure on the said Proudian who is from New Rochelle be successful early against their blitzes and have to stop blitzing That will give me more time to throw a big year for us the defending champions there are two new teams in the league (Duquesne and Marist) and ev erybody is gunning for Proudian is not ready to concede that Iona is the AAC favorite know if you could call us the he said guess you could if you go on last year but there any easy Santelia agreed with Proudian predicted to win it can work against Sante lia said program keeps getting better and I think getting a little more respect Our goal is to win the MAAC and get into the postseason and win ordham (0 2) at Hofstra (2 0)
