it is a tension he said I play piano trying to relax trying to get away fromall the Maestro on the mat i Zhang is team captain and concert pianist By Jeff Capellini Staff Writer Yale Zhang is a maestro of moves The Woodlands se nior 138 pound wres tler lives a very in volved life Not only is Zhang a captain of the team but he is also a concert pianist Aconcert pianist? started taking lessons back in China when I was 6 years Zhang said continued to study at the Westchester Conservatory of Music in White Plains when I moved here from California back in There are many sides to the two time defending Woodlands Invitational champion There is the wrestler the pianist the honor student and the leader strikes me the many things involved Woodlands coach Spencer Davis said wrestling team has the highest average in the school It makes me feel good to know that we have a team winning in school as well as on the mat The kids have to look far for help and assistance very quick to lend a hand a silent leader not very vocal but leads by exam Zhang can play pieces from Chopin Beethoven Mozart Bach and Schuman Not bad for someone who used to play only because he was ordered to I first started playing piano I played because my par ents wanted me to Zhang said I got more advanced WRESTLING though I realized I really liked playing the And the people at the West chester Conservatory of Music appreciate his ability too ale is a very conscientious said Bob Arthurs the Dean of aculty and Students at the Conservatory very se rious and sets extremely high standards He was here reli giously He worked on solo pieces and performed at our student Zhang said there is a personal correlation between wrestling and playing the piano During wrestling all I want to do is win because it is a tension he said I play piano trying to relax trying to get away from all the Arthurs said one reason why Zhang is such a successful pianist is because he is able to switch his focus from the mat to the concert hall almost immediately the piano is really a thing you do by he said a much calmer experi ence It really demands all your concentration You are not try ing to beat someone out so the competitiveness Occupational hazards However each time Zhang steps out on the mat he risks doing damage to among others his hands and fingers the two parts of the body he needs more than any other as a pianist is one of my major he said let me join the wrestling team They said it was up to me They are always telling me to be careful When I wrestle I hardly think aboutit Ijustwantto His teammates jokingly ride him about his prowess on the piano but other wrestlers like Joe Parrello said nothi ng should stop Zhang froffiT doing something he loves he is really into it it is good to Parrello said your interests are you should go for it 100 percent or somebody to be so good at something and going out and taking a risk of possibly ruining it got a lot Ivy League bound Last season in the 132 pound class Zhang was 15 4 before a wrist inj ury forced him to miss the postseason tournament This year as a 138 pounder he is 9 4 He cut down his performance schedule to devote time to his college search He chose the Uni versity of Pennsylvania and will be enrolled in the pre med pro gram next fall Aside from wrestling and mu sic Zhang finds himself involved in many other school activities He is ranked third in his class is a member of both the National Honor Society and the Asian Heritage Club is involved with' the Key Club and is the captain ofthe tennis team Hesaidhe may appear to have a jam packed schedule but in real i ty lucky to have as much free time as he has think it is that hard being this Zhang said was brought up with values from my parents Kids in China have absolutely no free time 17 have the time to do the things I want to 7L Smaller field starts Shoreline rom staff reports Mother Nature proved to be the 32nd annual Shoreline Clas sic Wrestling toughest and meanest opponent Rain and gale force winds yes terday forced seven teams to cancel out of the 24 team field Sleepy Hollow was one of them and Hackley dropped out for an undisclosed reason Mount Tyga Maclin appeared unfazed by the situa tion The junior 119 pounder who was third at 112 last year at Shoreline dismissed Martin Wasserberg with a 15 0 technical fall win though there are less teams it still change the Maclin said is still a lot of good competition I came here focused on wrestling I wanted to go out and work a couple of moves but not use up a lot of RESULTS Team standings and key 1 Poly
