t-l I attUKUn lJU i-UAh I If, I UbMMY, JANUARY 23, 2U0U OBITUARIES JAYC. LEFF WILLIAM J. LANE 'Your friendly Cadillac salesman' His love of art turned Uniontown bank's lobby into a gallery CSS frl By Mary Thomas Post-Gazette Arts Writer People told Jay C. Leff, the youngest bank president in the United States at the time, that he was crazy when he turned a large area of prime business space in the lobby of Payette Bank and Trust Co. in Uniontown into a gallery.

But the town had no museum, and thousands of people enjoyed the exhibitions he selected, said his son, Scott Brian Leff of Squirrel Hill. Mr. Leff was the first president and chief executive officer of the bank that his family founded in 1947, and he held that position until his retirement in 1986. He also was an avid collector of the arts of many cultures, and pieces from his collection have been exhibited at the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Frick Art Museum. He was the second chairman of the Pennsylvania State Council on the Arts and it was "under him that it began to grow wings and receive significant funding, his son said.

Mr. Leff died Sunday of an apparent heart attack in Squirrel Hill at age 75. He was born in Brownsville and lived in Squirrel Hill. His son said that collecting art was Mr. Leff 's "primary interest after his retirement." He began collecting chess sets and Oriental decorative arts in the late 1940s.

Then his attention turned to "what is typically called primitive art, a term he 1993 photo William Lane felt was disparaging to some very talented artists. He preferred the term exotic art," his son said. His collection was very strong in pre-Columbian and African art, most of which he acquired through American dealers and at auction. At one time, his son said, he was bidding against Nelson Rockefeller at a SotKeby auction. He was especially pleased later when a large number of artworks from his collection were selected to be shown at Rockefeller's Museum of Primitive Art in New York in the late 1960s.

At one point he became interested in Native American art and purchased from and sold to Four Winds Gallery in Shadyside. Owner John Krena said Mr. Leff had "an exceptional eye for fine quality." Mr. Leff took delight in his own eclectic tastes, which were evident in the mixed display of many of his finest pieces that he kept in his bank office. He disavowed the notion that "you can't blend styles," his son said.

"He had a diverse body of work from all over the world and all of the pieces were complementary with one another. The underlying measure was their aesthetic quality." He also "instilled a love of arts in his family. He took joy in the art in general. I remember being a very small boy and traveling to New York with my family, being immersed in that culture," his son said. His collection contained more than 4,000 pieces at its peak, his son said.

Over the years, he sold pieces and contributed several to the Carnegie, so that by the time he moved to smaller living quarters in the 1980s, he had fewer than 1,000 pieces. In addition to his son, Mr. Leff is survived by a daughter, Erin Hillary Leff of Olney a brother, Mark D. Leff of Escondido, and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m.

today in Temple Israel, Uniontown Jewish Community Center, West Main Street, Union-town. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. preceding the service. Lane was likely on the other end of the line. Mr. Lane, 71, was in the automobile business nearly all of his adult life. He started selling cars at a Kaiser Frazer dealership on Baum Boulevard in Bloomfield in the early 1950s. At the end of his career, he was a partner in All Star Cadillac on Route 51 in Whitehall, formerly Boyle Lane Cadillac.

"He lived and breathed the car business," said Robert Arnoni, Mr. Lane's partner and president of All Star. "I was very dependent on him. He had a wealth of information and knowledge about the business." Mr. Lane of Upper St.

Clair died Sunday of a heart attack he suffered at home. He put in six days a week at the dealership and worked on Saturday, the day before he died. Arnoni said Mr. Lane rarely took time off and was miffed a few years ago when Arnoni suggested that he take a vacation. "He worked because he enjoyed it," Arnoni said.

Mr. Lane grew up in Wilkinsburg, where his father, William Earl Lane, was a plumber. Mr. Lane attended Wilkinsburg High School, where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. He retained a love of sports all his life.

His wife, Katie Jo Chivers Lane, said he was renowned for his knowledge of sports trivia and was once a talk-show guest of the late Pirates broadcaster Bob Prince. The Lane family left Wilkinsburg for Cradock, a suburb of Portsmouth, in 1940 after Mr. Lane's father took a job at the Navy yard in Norfolk. der the ownership of Cliff Heath. Mr.

Lane was sales manager there for over 20 years. In 1981, after a stint at Bob Smith Ford, Mr. Lane and the late Charted "Rocky" Boyle purchased the Sam-; son Motor Co. and began their park; nership in Boyle Lane. A few1 years ago, Arnoni joined the dusk! ness and changed its name to AJk Star.

Mr. Lane belonged to a number pf: community organizations including; the Syria Temple and the Wilkins; burg Elks. One of his favorite pastimes was the St.Clair Country Club, where he! folfed and played cards with lends. l'2; His son, J. Calvin Lane of UppeC; St.

Clair, said people would often tell Mr. Lane how lucky he was. He said; his father would always reply, "Th harder you work, the luckier you get." Despite his dedication business, his wife and son Calvin said family was Mr. Lane's most hrK portant concern. "He worked for his family," said Calvin Lane, who worked alongside his father the last few years.

"I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. I got to see how well-liked rii was and how much he liked peopled In addition to his wife and sou Calvin, Mr. Lane is survived by another son, Col. William Earl Lane qf Fort Huachuca, two daught ters, Virginia Ann Lane of Milwaii kee and Rachel Anna Lane of Upper St. Clair; a sister, Verna Jean Varchetta of Murrysville; his stepmother, Lily Petrovic of Swissvale; two grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

Lane went to Cradock High School and then the Augusta Military School on a sports scholarship. He was an all-state basketball player at Augusta and was called "Wonder Boy" in news clippings of the day, his family said. He enlisted in the Air Force after graduation and was trained as a radio gunner. He served in Europe during World War II with the 12th Air Force B-26 Marauder Group. He flew 50 missions and recalled living in a tent, shaving from a helmet and participating in bombing missions.

Mr. Lane briefly attended the University of Pittsburgh after the war. He transferred to Waynesburg College, where he played sports and graduated in 1950. After graduation, he worked for Kaiser Frazer before joining San-ford Motors, also on Baum Boulevard. Sanford eventually became a Ford dealership in Mt.
