They also like to blitz. "The Oilers have given me the most problems so far," said Kosar. He must have a good day for the Browns to win. The Oiler replacements beat the Browns during the strike in Cleveland, and the regulars have since taken games in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh for a 3-0 division record. The Browns' division record is 2-1.

Thus a loss tomorrow would not only drop them a game behind tbe Oilers for the division lead, it also would put them two games behind in the first tiebreaker. So the Browns have a little more on tbe line than the Oilers. They also have slightly more experience in pressure games than the young Houston team. Houston hasn't played a meaningful division game at this stage of the season since 1980. Because they are more likely to be at their peak for a big game, Browns by 3.

Both teams are 6-3. The game shapes up as a battle of the Oilers' wide-open passing offense against the Browns' defense.

The Oilers, with quarterback Warren Moon and a bevy of receivers in the nin-and-shoot offense, rank seventh in tbe league in total yardage. Tbe Browns' defense ranks No. 1 in least yardage allowed, No. 1 against the pass, and No. 1 in fewest points.

Tbe critical match-up is probably Oiler receivers Ernest Givins and Drew Hill vs. the Browns' outstanding cornerbacks, Prank Minnifield and Hanford Dixon. Tbe Browns have had trouble running the ball this year, and the Houston defense has been tough in that department, ranking seventh. But the Oilers are just 15th against the pass, and the Browns' Bernie Kosar leads the league's No. 4 passing attack.

Season record: 52 -31-1 Lockbaum now waits to hear from pros Statistics say Steelers worse than they look BOSTON (AP) The fabulous college career is ended. The records are in the books. Gordie Lockbaum of Holy Cross, though, still is thinking football.

First, there's the coming Heisman Trophy balloting. Then there's the possibility of playing in the pros. Lockbaum, a throwback to the old days as a two-way player, finished fifth in the Heisman voting last year. It was a major surprise. The trophy is just about reserved for the big boys, Division I-A players, not Division I-AA heroes.

The senior from Glassboro, N.J., has received whopping attention Now, he isn't sure whether the pros will consider him for offense or defense. "I'd love to play pro bailout we'll have to wait and see," he said start looking around and seek some input about whether I'll be projected on offense or defense. Right now I'm not sure where I fit, but I'll start asking." Like his teammates, Lockbaum is disappointed that Holy Cross, top-ranked nationally in Division 1-AA, cannot participate in the playoffs. School officials began de-emphasizing football a couple of years ago, joining the Colonial League, which bars postseason play. The Crusaders also were disappointed when the school also cancelled the traditional windup with Division I-A rival Boston College.

"Since I've been here, we've looked forward to playing BC at the end of the season' Lockbaum said earlier this week. "It's always been the way we've ended up. There.was always a lot of hype before the game and a lot of lost tempers and emotion during the game. Now it's not here." Noting that Villanova was the Crusaders' season finale, Lockbaum called it "our bowl game." "We knew before the season we'd play only 11 games and we'd have to prove ourselves over those 11 games," he said. "And that's what we've from tbe national media this season, but he didn't think he was in the Heisman running until the Crusaders showed a national television audience its 39-6 victory over Villanova Thursday.

So, after a brilliant performance in the only primetime television appearance of his intercollegiate career, Lockbaum reassessed the odds. "I think it helped my Heisman chances," he said. "Before the game I didn't think things could change, but maybe they can." Lockbaum piled up 259 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns, leading Holy Cross (11-0) to its first unbeaten-untied season since 1918. He caught 15 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns, carried seven times for IS yards and one score, and had 45 return yards. While scoring 22 touchdowns for 132 points this season, he set a flock of Holy Cross records, including: Most career touchdowns rushing, 27.

Most career touchdowns receiving, 16. Most career receptions, 135. Most career receiving yards, 2,012. With Holy Cross averaging better than 46 points a game while holding opponents to 10, Lockbaum wasn't needed as much on defense this year. Flames at a glance running back James Brooks, who sprained an ankle in the same game.

Tim McGee and Stanford Jennings will replace them, respectively. Also, both starting Bengals cornerbacks are hurting, Lewis Billups (back) and Louis Breeden (ankle). They could be replaced by Ray Horton and rookie Eric Thomas. Fullback Larry Kinnebrew is in coach Sam Wyche's doghouse and has been running behind Bill Johnson in practice. Kinnebrew told Wyche during practice on Wednesday that he had a cold and couldn't work out.

Wyche ordered him off the field. Kinnebrew returned on Thursday and found himself running behind Johnson. The Steelers will have other changes besides Pollard for Jackson. With Louis Lipps (hamstring) and John Stallworth (ankle) out, the starting wide receivers will be Charles Lockett and Calvin Sweeney, although Weegie Thompson and Joey Clinkscales will play often. If rookie comerback Delton Hall (toe) cannot start, rookie Rod Woodson will make bis first pro start.

Hall also injured his ankle in practice yesterday. "We have a lot of injuries from last week," Pollard said. "That seems like the time when guys pick it up a notch. Guys are hurt and other guys pick it up. That's when everybody goes a little bit extra.

I think that's what's going to happen Sunday." Tonight's gam: Penguins vs. Calgary Flames, 6:05 p.m, Olympic Saddledoma, Calgary, Alberta. Radio-TV: KOKA (1020 AM) and the Penguins Radio Network; KBL Cable-TV. About the game: The Penguins conclude a three-game western road trip agalnat the Ramos. Entering last night's game at Edmonton, the Penguin were 2-7-1 on the road this year.

About ttto Flamee: First-year coach Tarry Crisp, once the leading candidate for the Penguins' coaching Job, has the Flame In second place In the Smythe Division with 22 points. Rookie Joa Nleuwondyk and Brett Hull lead the team with 1 1 goals apiece. Nleuwondyk scored four times In a 0-1 romp over Quebec Thursday. Goalie Mike Vernon left that gam after being struck on the front of his helmet by a shot from Quebec' Alain Cote. FROM PAGE 11 to improve on where we are right now.

Right now I don't think we deserve to be in the playoffs." But Dunn and other players agree on one thing if they are to entertain any thoughts about the playoffs this year, they must win tomorrow. "This is probably one of the most important games we'll play," said Prank Pollard, who will replace the injured Earnest Jackson at fullback. "Let's put it this way," Dunn said. think it's way high on our list. It has to be.

It's a division game and we've already lost to Cleveland and Houston. We have to beat "Cincinnati." Said linebacker Robin Cole: "I wouldn't put it all on just one game because we have six games left. But far as we're concerned, yeah, this is a game we have to win. We don't even want to talk about not winning this game." Another loss and the Steelers will be two games behind the division leader. But if the Steelers are not in great shape, where does that leave Cincinnati? Tbe Bengals are the flip side of the Steelers.

They have wonderful stats and few victories. In the six union games, the Bengals rank second in the NFL on offense with 401 yards a tgaine and second on defense, allow-Sig 276.7 a game. Yet they are last in -be AFC Central with a 3-6 record. Both the Bengals and the Steelers enter tomorrow's game in poor phys--Ical shape.
