Outlook Takes Brighter Hue By United Press PHILADELPHIA Oct 17 The University of Pennsylvania faces the major portion of its football schedule with brighter prospects than most of Its supporters expected when the com plete change in the coaching system was considered Harvey Harman and his aides have devoted the past four weeks to the teaching of football: fundamentals They have placed little stress on the attack or the defense insofar as the team is concerned but they have ever lastingly drilled the varsity squad in the rudiments of the game That the teaching has produced re sults was indicated in the improved play of the entire squad during the past practice The mistakes made in the opening game with Swarthmore were corrected and the players quickly adapted the new formations a 15 yard army penalty Harvard held the ball on 38 yard line Wood pulled the Army secondaries in with a line plunge and then flipped a long pass to White who squirmed 14 yards for a score drop kick split the middle and Harvard was out in front to stay Army wasted little time in moving into action in the first quarter The game was little more than under way when Ray Stecker (he young man who ruined Navy last year spun through his own left tackle hit the open country and raced 45 yards for a touchdown His try for the extra points was wide by yards Stecker Again Harvard kicked off and after an ex change of punts It was ball on Its own 36 yard line Stecker run ning behind perfect interference swept around left end to 30 yard line A pass Steeper to King placed' the ball on the 15 tyard quarter when Mike asco tophomore fullback carried the ball over on an off tackle play from the 15 yard line The score came as a result of a 57 yard drive by the St Lawrence team from the kickoff at yesterday It was their first loss for Dunkirk in 23 starts The Lackawanna school team piled tip a total of 19 points Dunkirk went scoreless The muddy field held no terror for the charges of Coach Dell isher 1 The Steel City players were not to be stopped The team has not been scored on this season and they were a determined bands of youths yester day The game was considered' the most difficult of a center The Dunkirk team found him a hard nut to crack It seemed that whenever the husky fullback ripping huge holes through the Dunkirk line Peewee Marcy was dashing around the ends for long gains Between the charges of Amorosi and Marcy and the great Lackawanna line the very little opportunity own plays into motion Paluch who played for Dunkirk is credited with saving his team from a greater were directly responsible for the 33 to 7 victory over the Hobart eleven here this afternoon Hobart scored in the last minute of the sec ond quarter when Union third string reserves were in the game Union gained 180 yards from scrim mage and 151 from passes while Ho bart advanced 67 yards from scrim mage and made 35 yards from its two completed passes out of its nine tries Union made 20 first downs to seven Lippitt and Cinella starred during the game Lippitt making one run of 34 yards which led to a touchdown and he passed 34 yards to Cinella as well as 20 yards to Murray but neither of Managers of varsity athle tic teams now receive their letters at the start of the season rather than at UNION NIPS HOBART 12 0 By LES CONKLIN International New Service Sport Writer NEW YORK Oct 17 not the ball that counts throwing it Before the world series started most of the fancy pitching was expected to be flashed in the games in which the deadened ball of the National league was to be used Yet the lively American league horsehide was the ball used in the two outstanding hurling performances of the the two hit games pitched by George Earnshaw and Burleigh Grimes These two feats coupled with Bfil three hit game in which the National league ball was used combined to make the 1931 classic one of the best pitched eWorld series in history Some Pitching in 1906 Certainly it was the best pitched series since the 1906 classic when three two hit games were hurled That year Ed Reulbach of the Cubs started the fireworks by holding the White Sox to a pair of singles Reul bach marred his performance some what by Issuing six passes He fanned only three batters The next day Big Ed Walsh Jumped into the spotlight by yielding only two hits both triples against the Cubs winning 3 to 0 k' The third two hit game of that series was contributed by Mordecai Brown of the Cubs Both were sin gles and the Cubs won 1 to 0 In the succeeding 25 years only three two hit games were hurled in world a dangerous aerial attack which was less effective because of the wet day Kenmore touchdowns were made by Stubbs and Engle with Stubbs also accounting for an extra point after touchdown Mastowski
