That hurled vengeance at thy word, Now blasts his well won fame Dbcatcr thy bravest son, Who bade the Rriton fall; Who Macedonian's colors won, Triumphant at thy call. Dehold him now in death expire, To passion giv'n a prey, Who the rage of battle's fire, Undaunted by He fell but not in cause, Nor for his fame He dt'd hut to transgress the laws, And stigmatize his name Ye gallant tars who mount the wave, And dare the foaming deep Preserve your fame, your honor save, Nor mate your country weep. PIHEN1X, the THE BUCKET. He to this heart are the scenes of my childhood. When fond recollection recals them to eidw; The orenard, the meadow, the deep tangled Wild wood.

And spot which my infancy knew. The wide-spreading pond, and the mill which stood by it. The bridge, and the rock where the cateract fell. The cot of mv father, the dairy-house nigh it, And the rude bucket that hung in the well. The old oaken bncket, the Iron bound bucket.

The moss covered bucket, which hung in the well. That moss covered vessel I hail as a treasure, For often at noon, when returned from the field, I found it the source of an exquisite pleasure 5 The purest, and sweetest that nature can yield. Row ardent 1 seized it with hands that were glowing. And quick to the white pebbled bottom it fell, Then toon with the emblem of truth overflowing, And dripping with coolness, it rose from tha well. The old oaken bucket, the iron bound bucket, Tlie moss covered bucket arose from the well.

How sweet from the green mossy brim to receive As on the curb, it inclines to my lipa 1 Not a full blushing goblet could tempt me to leave it. Though with the nectarthat Jupiter sips. And now. far from the situation, 1 1 he tear of regret will intrusively swell, As fancy rts to my former plantation, And sighs for the bucket which tatngs in the well. The old oaken bucket, the iron-bound bucket.

About 10 on Wednesday morning the President of the Convention, the Governor elect, arrived in town, attended by two troops of cavalry and a cavalcade of citizens, and after passing through the principal streets, was escorted to the State House. The Legislature was assembled, and the President of the Convention soon afterwards administered to the members the oaths required by the constitution. The Senate then made choice of the Hon. John Chandler, of Monmouth, as President of that body, and appointed Ebenezer Herrick, Esq. of Bowdoinham, Secretary.

The House of Representatives unanimously elected Judge Ames, of Bath, Speaker, and J. L. Child, Esq. of Augusta, Clerk of the House. About 1 the Legislature, accompanied by the President of the Convention, the officers of government and members of Congress from this State, were taken by a military escort, consisting of one company of riflemen and two of infantry, to the meeting-house of the first parish, where some musical pieces were tastefully performed by the Beethoven Society, and very fervent, appropriate, and eloquent prayers were offered to the Ruler of the Universe by the Rev.

Mr. Nicholls, of thistown, anti the favor of Deity was humbly invoked upon the commencement and progress of this new government. The meeting-house was thronged and the galleries were tastefully decorated with the beauty and fashion of Portland and the vicinity. The day began with showers, but towards noon, the weather became pleasant, and passed off to the satisfaction of our citizens and a large collection of strangers. We annex a list of the Governor and Counsellors, who were chosen on Thursday, together with the members of both branches of the Legislature.
