30 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Tuesday, August 15, 1989 Guillain-Barre syndrome, a potentially paralyzing condition of the central nervous system that is caused by a virus. Gillis hopes to be ready for the beginning of the NHL season. Randy Barnes of the United States, who already owned the best indoor shot put dis- tance this year, threw the longest distance of the outdoor season (72 feet, 9V4 inches) at the Gugl International Meet in Linz, Austria. Roberto Duran boxed a three-round exhibition in Reno, last night against Danny Morgan of Bloomington, then clowned with Sugar Ray Leonard, who was at ringside. After the three two-minute rounds ended, Duran, more than 20 pounds over the weight he will be at when he fights Leonard Dec.

7, leaned through the ropes and said to Leonard: "No more champagne. The longtime rivals laughed. Carlos Yates, the leading scorer in George Mason University basketball history, was shot to death by an unidentified gunman time. We feel he can eliminate one a month." According to a spokesman for King, Tyson's next opponent is likely to be James "Buster" Douglas, and the title bout probably will be in October. Also under consideration is a bout with Michael Dokes.

College football Don't expect Big Eight Conference executives to root aloud, but there is no question that they will be pulling for a school other than Oklahoma or Oklahoma State to win the league's championship and automatic Orange Bowl berth this season. Why? Because if one of those two schools wins the title, it could cost the conference a minimum of $4 million in addition to the minimum of $500,000 the league is already out because of the schools' probations, which include bans on television appearances. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State rank with Nebraska as the league favorites, but if Oklahoma State or Oklahoma wins the Big Eight, the Orange Bowl has the contractual right not to take the runner-up. Steelers Two rookie free agents, running back Charvez Foger and safety Owen Bartruff, were cut. After reviewing the loss to Washington last Saturday, Coach Chuck Noll noted the good play of cornerbacks Rod Woodson, rookie David Johnson and Gary Richard, a Plan free agent from Pitt.

Rookie wide receiver Derek Hill, who hyperextended a knee Aug. 2, began running full-speed in drills. Linebacker David Little, who sprained his ankle Saturday, said it's still sore, but he plans to play Saturday night in Cleveland. Doc Daniels, the rotund agent for unsigned No. 1 pick Tim Worley, pointed to the team's 1.1-yard average per carry against the Redskins and said, "As big as I am, could do that." Daniels, by the way, claims the unsigned running back has sold two insurance policies, both to Los Angeles Raiders safety Eddie Anderson and tackle Rory Graves.

Worley said over the weekend he has not tried to sell any insurance, a career Daniels said the former University of Georgia star would pursue if he remained unsigned. Cleveland Browns A Sept. 18 trial date has been set for the cocaine trafficking case of Cleveland running back Kevin Mack, said his attorney, Gerald Golden. Mack remains free on $2,500 bond and recently rejoined the team for practice after finishing a monthlong drug rehabilitation program at the Cleveland Clinic. The Browns reacquired offensive lineman Darryl Haley from Green Bay for an undisclosed conditional draft choice.

Coach Bud Carson said he probably will move Pro Bowl cornerback Hanford Dixon to free safety. Several weeks ago, Carson said Dixon wasn't as good as his longtime running mate, Frank Minnifield. More pro football Top draft pick Brian Williams, an offensive lineman from the University of Minnesota and Mt. Lebanon High School, and veterans free safety Terry Kinard and quarterback Phil Simms signed with the New York Giants. Williams was the 18th player taken in the NFL draft.

He signed a four-year contract valued at about $1.98 million and is expected to play center this season. In the district Amateur Ron Skiles of Nemacolin Country Club and pros Joe Boros of Pittsburgh Field Club and Tony Perla of Merion Country Club fired 5-under-par 67s to share the first-round lead in the $18,500 Michelob Pennsylvania Open at the Country Club of York. Bob Ford of Oakmont Country Club, the 1977 and 1981 winner, and John Mazza of Connoquenessing were one shot back heading into the final round today. Elsewhere Michael Salmon of Pittsburgh defeated Peter Martin of Newton Center, 6-0, 6-0, in an opening-round singles match of the U.S. National Amateur tennis tournament at Kiamesha Lake, N.Y.

Winger Paul Gillis of the Quebec Nordi-ques says he is making a fine recovery from MORHiHG BRIEFING $100 million offered for Tyson world tour From local and wire dispatches Heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson was offered $100 million yesterday by a British sports promotions firm to make a yearlong world tour that would include a title fight each month. Winners Worldwide which promotes snooker and soccer as well as British rock bands, said the tour would start in the United States and move into Europe and Japan before finishing in Brockton, birthplace of the late Rocky Marciano, who also was an unbeaten heavyweight champion. Stephen Jones of Winners Worldwide said the firm has never promoted a title fight, but "We've done a couple of local shows which have been very successful." He said the company had sent information about its offer to Tyson's business manager, Don King, and was seeking to interest large corporations such as McDonald's and Burger King in sponsoring the tour. A news release from Winners Worldwide said "there is no reason why a world champion boxer cannot be taken on tour in the same way as pop groups, as the current opposition shouldn't take up too much of his in Washington, uu, sunaay. i nere are no suspects in the slaying of Yates, 27, who played for GMU from 1981-85 and in Italy for one season.
