Lynch, 58, and his son, Daniel 19, were killed Saturday in a three-vehicle accident on icy Route 220 in Blair County. Six others were injured in the accident, including Lynch's wife, Kathleen, 47, who was in.

stable condition yesterday in Tyrone Hospital after twice undergoing surgery there. The Lynches were headed for Penn State University to attend graduation ceremonies for their daughter, Kelly, 22. They had planned to return with her to their home in Penn Hills for her party that night. The accident occurred shortly before 9 a.m. on an ice-covered highway five miles north of Tyrone. Trooper Thomas Marshall of the state police barracks in Hollidays-burg said Lynch, of 10139 Clair Penn Hills, and his son were pronounced dead at 8:55 a.m.

at the accident scene by Blair County Deputy Coroner Richard Goertz. Goertz said Lynch died of a skull fracture and his son of trauma. Marshall said Lynch's wife and a family friend, Paul J. Och 46, of Fieldcrest Drive, Whitehall, and four people in another car involved in the accident were taken to Tyrone Hospital. The hospital refused to release information about any of the victims.

Pittsburgh Police Cmdr. Ronald Freeman said Mrs. Lynch, who suffered multiple fractures in the accident, underwent operations at Tyrone Hospital on Saturday night and again yesterday. "Her condition went from grave to stabilized. She has improved considerably and is expected to make a slow recovery," he said.

"It's anticipated she will be moved to Shadyside Hospital on Wednesday, but her condition will dictate that." Others injured in the accident were David A. Ammerman, 72, of Lock Haven, Clinton County; his wife, Pauline, 64; Dorothy Ammerman, 65, of Mackeyville, Clinton' County, and her daughter, Vivian 32, of MacKeyville. can't remember Chuck ever complaining; no matter how difficult the assignment, he did it and did it well. I can't think of any higher compliment than to say he was a good newspaperman." Freeman of the Pittsburgh police said Lynch "had complete access to us. He was not restricted in any way, which is simply a measure of how we treated and accepted him.

I've had a lot of detectives call me to provide their services or act as pallbearers. Everybody who knew Chuck is so saddened." Vince Gagetta, a former Post-Gazette staffer and a longtime friend of Lynch's, had planned to attend Kelly Lynch's graduation party in Penn Hills. "Some of the decorations were already in place, and my wife was doing some of the cooking for the Saturday night party," said Gagetta, who said graduation services at Penn State were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Gagetta began work at the Post-Gazette in 1966, the same year Lynch did, and sat at a nearby desk.

"He was just a very competent reporter whose heart was as big as a house," Gagetta said. Bruce Wright, a county deputy coroner, said: "Chuck not only would come down to do his job but often brought coffee. He didn't pester us like some of the other guys. He was an all-around nice guy, and we, in turn, would tell him what we could." Lynch was chairman of the Post-Gazette unit of the Newspaper Guild, Local 61, and was a member of the local's executive board. He had worked earlier as a news writer for WTAE-TV and as a reporter for the Pittsburgh Catholic.

His son, Daniel, was a freshman at the Boyce campus of Community College of Allegheny County and had worked at Dirty Harry's Bicycle Shop in Verona. Kelly Lynch was a graduate in administration of justice at Penn State. Mr. Lynch also is survived by a sister, Claudia Delandro of Whitaker. Pitt to study osteoporosis University of Pittsburgh researchers have received a three-year, $500,000 federal grant to determine whether women can reduce the risk of osteoporosis by exercising regularly. Osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones, pri-mariy affects women in their postmenopausal years. Rivka Black Sandler, professor of gerontology at Pitt's School of Health Related Professions and the study's primary investigator, said regular physical activity causes bones to increase in mass and strength.

The researchers will recruit 300 female volunteers between 35 and 55 to be part of the study. For information, call the university at 624-0300. Apprenticeship training The Western Pennsylvania Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program will accept applications Feb. 6-17 for apprenticeships in its heavy-equipment program. Applicants must be 18 to 26 and at least 5 feet 4 inches tall, have good eyesight and coordination and possess high school diplomas or GED equivalents.

The Lynch car slid into the side of the rig and then collided head-on with Ammerman's car, which was southbound. Daus was not injured, and his rig had only minor damage. The Lynch car, a 1988 Buick sedan, and the Ammerman car, a 1978 Ford LTD, were demolished. Lynch and his son were in the front seat, and Kathleen Lynch and Och in the back seat, state police said. Marshall said none of the people killed or injured was wearing a seat belt.

Firefighters had to use power tools to pry open both cars to free the victims. William E. Deibler, managing editor of the Post-Gazette, said: "Every profession has its stereotypes, and one of the enduring ones in ours is that police reporters are hardbitten cynics. But Chuck Lynch, a police reporter for more than 20 years, was one of the kindest, gentlest men I've ever worked with. "He had a tough, unglamorous, demanding job, but he loved it.
