meeting in the assem blv hall of the Hotel Severin last night when resolutions were adopted and a committee of fifteen members was ap pointed to carry the resolutions into ef lect The meeting was enthusiastic the appearance of Bookwaiter in the hah at o'clock bing the occasion for prolonged applause The candidate in a brief address re viewed the Republican platform denied that he would yield must not be condoned or connived at by city officials as has been the practice in the past it entails untold misery upon posterity as well as upon those guilty of its defiling practice Extermination not segre gation or commercialized vice must be the attitude of good government toward this evil 14 A I We favor the granting of public franchises onlv upon such terms as will safeguard the interests of the people in parting with valu able rights keeping in view the fact that all franchise values are the common property of all the people We favor the holding of all public utility companies to the and which have been ignored for pear ly a quarter of a century should le vitalized and should control the city administration No competent employe now serving tho city should be discharged because of his political belief and no incompetent person should he employed or retained on account of party membership A system of promotion should prevail in all departments especially the fire and police to the end rhat the highest posi tions may be open to those whose service has shown that they are worthy of them We favor tin immediate application of the merit system to al) the departments of the city
