Oaify Facts Dec. JB, 1962 7 Christniastree farms expand in California SAN FRANCISCO A lot of tender lovirig care may have gone into that Christinas tree in your living room. That's for if. it.came from one of California's growing number of Christmas tree farins, says the Council' of. California Growers.

Fifteen years ago there were only a few such farms. Today, there are dozens, with plantings running up to liie hundreds of thousands of trees. Because they are about as fragile as-lettuce, Christmas trees call for extremely tender handling whether they come from planted seed or from native forests. Seedlings are first grown in beds from one or two years, and then transplanted to the fields. In the transplanting they are treated like valuable bric-a-brac to preserve uniform shape.

After cutting, the trees must be carried, not dragged on the ground, to prevent damage to the wa.xy coatmg on the needles. Fmally, they are placed in refrigerated storage to keep the needles from drbpiping. Californiahs each year buy four million Christmas trees, with a value of $20 million. However, only about 20 per cent of those are harvested in California. The balance are imported from Washington, Oregon and Canada; and even some Scotch pine from Michigan.

Greatest production in California stUl comes from young trees growing in natural stands, usually in cut-over timber areas of the Sierra Nevada. Owners of such stands often harvest more than one tree from the same stump. Here the bottom branches are left at harvest time. After a year, one of the branches is selected to become another tree, while the others are pruned. The dancing the curtain raiser at actress Debbie Reynolds' nightclub debut at the Riviera Hotel. Some people laughed and some people didn't and the odds were that the skit would not last out the full engagement because it was thought by many observers to be in questionable taste. For example: As the president gazed at a I scantily-ciad chorus gurl he said, "I have nothing against the dairy I Industry." And while ogling another show girl he quipped, "Do you give green stamps."
