C-10 PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE 0 THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1995 WILLIAM R. "BUCKY" McCLUSI HU' M.iiiniMU I II I .1. I Performer who became a salesman Kennametal founder and philanthropist i ri i in in inn- By Tony Norman Post-Gazette Staff Writer If playwright Arthur Miller had known William R. "Bucky" McClure, the main character of Miller's "Death of a Salesman" might not have been so melancholy. Mr.

McClure, who was born and raised in Oakland, became a salesman in Ohio after he had a career performing on stage in Pittsburgh and Las Vegas. "He originally thought being in a band would bring him influence, but he ultimately found happiness living quietly in Ohio," said Mr. McClure's son, William R. McClure II of Youngstown, Ohio. The elder McClure, 78, died of congestive heart failure Saturday in the VA Medical Center Oakland, just blocks from Schenley High School, where he graduated in 1935.

Since then, the younger McClure has been poring over his father's personal effects, piecing together who his dad was behind the sales pitches and congenial backslaps that were his tools of trade. Unlike Willy Loman, the character in "Death of a Salesman" who lived a life of quiet desperation, Mr. McClure had accomplished much before settling in the Ohio suburbs in the early 1950s. The elder McClure had been a soloist with the Maurice Spitalny Orchestra, which toured nationally, and performed with the Blue Baron Orchestra in the late '30s and early '40s. "He ran in some fancy circles once upon a time," the younger McClure said of his dad, who spent the last half of his life in Boardman, Ohio.

"He was best friends with Pittsburgh boxer Billy Conn and ran around with broadcaster Bob Prince. It was only later on in life that he became an average Joe and worked as a salesman." McClure described his father's life on the stage as a period Mr. McClure was proud of but not especially eager to talk about "He lived an unbelievable his son said after piecing together information from relatives, friends and news clippings. He said he was only now learning about his father's performances in Pittsburgh and Las Vegas and his work with such performers as Rose Marie, Sophie Tucker and Jackie Gleason. "Now his whole history is starting to unravel," the younger McClure said.

Just before he enlisted in the Army in 1942, Mr. McClure married Katherine Smith of Pittsburgh, the sister of local politician "Greenfield" Jimmy Smith. Before the war, Mr. McClure performed at the Bachelor's Club in East Liberty, which Jimmy Smith owned. "It was a club that had gambling, booze and entertainment He was a combination singer, master of ceremonies and pit boss," McClure said of his dad's job at the speakeasy.

In the Army, Mr. McClure ran a Special Services office and officers' club. After the war, he divorced Katherine Smith and moved to Ohio. In 1955, he married Eleanor Baer and gave up show business for the quiet suburbs of Boardman, where he sold planned developments for Albee Homes for years. After that, he sold a number of different products.

His wife died in July of this year. "My dad always remarked that she destroyed the one picture that he wished he still had, a photo of him on a yacht in Philadelphia with his arms around a young blonde he said was Grace Kelly," said his son, who laughed at the memory. "Dad was always trying to be one of the A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in St Luke Church on South Avenue in Boardman. Rossi Bros.

Funeral Home in Youngstown, Ohio, is handling arrangements. By Steve Halvonik Post-Gazette Staff Writer Alex G. McKenna was an industrialist who helped build Kennametal into a world leader in the carbide metal industry. He was also an active philanthropist who believed in a strong civic duty, whether it was in giving away thousands of trees to commemorate Arbor Day, overseeing two Latrobe-based family foundations or donating his time to the community. "He was a family-oriented man who was very unpretentious in his life," said William Boxx, a law who lives in Latrobe.

"He was very active in the community and had a strong sense of citizenship. He tried to promote the values he believed in that were best for the country." During his 52-year career with the Latrobe-based Kennametal, Mr. McKenna was general partner, executive vice president, president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of directors. Mr. McKenna, who lived in Ligon-ier, died of pneumonia Tuesday five days before his 81st birthday in Latrobe Area Hospital.

Born in Crafton, Mr. McKenna was one of 10 children. He graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie Mellon University, in 1938, with a degree in metallurgy. Shortly after graduation, he joined his cousin, Philip, in launching McKenna Metals the forerunner of Kennametal. Philip was chief executive and Alex was chief operating officer.

The company's sales grew from $30,000 the first year to $1 million by 1941. Today, Kennametal employs 7,000 and has annual sales of $1 billion, said Robert McGeehan, president and chief executive officer "Our traditions of business integrity, technological excellence and attention to customers are part of the legacy that both Philip and Alex McKenna have left us," McGeehan said. McGeehan, who joined Kennametal about 15 years ago, recalled Mr. McKenna as "a guy who always seemed concerned about his customers, his community and his employees." McGeehan said he was aware of labor disputes between Kennametal and its workers, including a 90-day strike in 1955, but did not believe they ever affected the respect employees had for McKenna. Among his other interests, Mr.

McKenna served for many years as chairman of the Philip M. McKenna Foundation and Katherine Mabis McKenna Foundation, both of Latrobe. The Philip M. McKenna Foundation is named for Mr. McKenna's cousin and business partner, and promotes economic education and good-government policies.

Boxx, who is married to Mr. McKenna's daughter, Linda, now serves as chairman of the McKenna Foundation. An avid gardener and conservationist, Mr. McKenna gave away thousands of trees to commemorate Arbor Day. He was a member of numerous civic and business panels.

He belonged to the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry, and sat on the Latrobe Area Hospital's board of directors for 43 years. He also Alex G. McKenna in 1985 served for nine years on the board of the Latrobe Area Chamber of Commerce. Among his honors were honorary doctoral degrees from St Vincent College of Latrobe and Seton Hill College of Greensburg. In 1980, Gov.

Dick Thomburgh selected Mr. McKenna to serve on a five-member panel that screened state judicial candidates. Mr. McKenna was chairman of Kennametal's board of directors from 1979 to 1986. He retired from the board in 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Fitzmaurice; a son, David Elliott of Pendleton, three other daughters, Zan Rich of Ligonier, Kim Kennedy of Champaign, 111., and Beth Hall of Pittsburgh; 11 grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Edith Elliott of Camp Hill. Friends will be received in Snyder Funeral Home, Bell and East Church streets, Ligonier, from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.

A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Trinity Church in Ligonier. Burial will be in Ligonier Valley Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Latrobe Area Hospital Charitable Foundation Community Education Fund or to St. Vincent College.

DANIEL VICTOR FRANCIS Chemical engineer, head of his own firm COL. GEN. DIMITRYVOLKOGONOV Soviet general who changed his views, exposed past, By Michael Newman Post-Gazette Staff Writer Daniel Victor Francis was an engineer until the end. When friends visited him at Shadyside Hospital, where he died Tuesday of lung cancer, he would quiz them about the construction project he could see from his window. "When you visit someone at the hospital, you don't expect an exam," said a friend and colleague, Martin Hess.

"But Vic was like that. He was the kind of guy who had to know how everything works, and he usually did." Mr. Francis, whose career spanned four decades and three continents, was 68. Known by everyone as 'Vic," he received his bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1950, and worked for Koppers, Sinclair-Koppers, Arco and finally his own consulting firm, D.V. Francis Associates.

ed with five sons. All of them came home to visit their father in Crafton in the last few weeks, over Thanksgiving or later. -In addition to his wife, Mr. Francis is survived by his sons, Daniel of Cape May, N.J., Steven J. of Elyria, Ohio, Martin V.

of Vineland, N.J., Christopher A of Naples, Fla, and Rafael W. of Moon; and four sisters, Norma Grubb of Columbus, Ohio, June Johnson of Las Vegas, Joan Keane of Mt. Lebanon and Donna Schreiber of Strongsville, Ohio. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 E.m. today in Beinhauer funeral ome, West Liberty Avenue, Brook-line.

The funeral will be at 11 am tomorrow in Beinhauer's. Burial will be in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 241 Fourth Pittsburgh 15222. While at Koppers, Mr.

Francis would travel often to Europe. For four years he was a production manager at a Koppers chemical plant in Argentina. It was there that he met his wife, Gladys Berro Francis, who teaches English as a Second Language at the Community College of Allegheny County. Mr. Francis was an expert on chemical and cogeneration plants, and held several design patents in the chemical industry.

Hess, who worked with him at Koppers, said Mr. Francis knew not only how such complicated machinery worked, but also why. "He was the rare guy who combined both a knowledge of mechanics with an understanding of theory," Hess said. Mr. Francis was also close to his family.

He used to kid his mother, asking why he never had any brothers; she would tell him to be careful what he wished for. He was reward Passionately outspoken about Russian history, Gen. Volkogonov occasionally caused a stir in the United States as well. In 1992, he wrote a letter saying there was no evidence in KGB archives that Alger Hiss was a spy, which was read as an exoneration by the defenders of Hiss. The attendant furor in America forced the Russian historian to retract his statement and concede that he had not examined all the files.

The New York Times MOSCOW Col. Gen. Dmitry Volkogonov, a Soviet army historian who lost his illusions about communism and helped strip his countrymen of theirs, died yesterday in Moscow of stomach cancer. He was 67. Gen.

Volkogonov's biographies of Stalin, Trotsky and Lenin, based on secret documents to which he had unique access in the 1970s and '80s, as chief of the military's psychologi cal warfare department, forced Russians to face the harsh truth about their leaders. Gen. Volkogonov began his career as a loyal party member, teaching Marxist-Leninist propaganda, and ended it as a ferocious anti-communist. A liberal member of parliament and a military adviser to President Boris Yeltsin of Russia, Gen. Volkogonov lost favor in the Kremlin by opposing the war in Chechnya.
