PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1997 A-17 OBITUARIES ruth McGregor coyiii FRANK CHISMAR 'Deadly accurate' bowler of '50s and '60s Sun-Telegraph reporter known for compassionate coverage Frank Chismar in 1987 By Phil Axelrod Post-Gazette Sports Writer When Frank Chismar was at the top of his game, he earned the nickname "The Big Train" because he usually was the final member of his team to bowl. "Frlnk was the anchor man," said Bob Wissman, who was a teammate of Mr. Chismar's on the former Wissman's Pro Shop team in Forest Hills in the early '70s. "He held the team up. You could always count on him." Mr.

Chismar, one of the top bowlers in the region in the '50s and '60s, died Thursday of pneumonia in St Margaret's Seneca Place in Penn Hills at the age of 76. A long-time resident of Forest Hills, Mr. Chismar most recently lived in Penn Hills. "Everybody knew who Frank Chismar was," said Buddy DeLuca of Churchill, a fixture on the bowling scene for the past three decades. "He was a big, stocky guy who was deadly accurate.

He threw the ball in the pocket all the time." Mr. Chismar rolled five sanctioned 300 games, three 299s and two 298s. He was the West Penn singles champion four times and the Greater Pittsburgh Traveling Bowling Association singles and doubles champion twice. The highlight of his career came in 1961, when he challenged the legendary Don Carter in a special televised match. Chismar bowled a 289, but lost to Carter's 290.

Mr. Chismar has been inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, the Greater Pittsburgh Bowling Association Hall of Fame, the Allegheny County Sports Hall of Fame and the East Borous Chapter of the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame. He was a retired production coordinator at the East Pittsburgh plant of Westinghouse Electric and he was a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Chismar is survived by a son, John F.

Chismar of Millvale; three daughters, Mary Louise "Debbie" By Caroline Abels Post-Gazette Staff Writer Ruth McGregor Coyne was working as secretary to the editor of the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph when her boss approached her one day in 1 950 and told her to go cover a story. "I know you can do this," the editor told her, according to Mrs. Coyne's daughter, Bonnie. So Ruth McGregor went, and when she returned to the newsroom she stared at her typewriter for an hour, not knowing where to start, until a colleague typed out her notes for her and let her take it from there. So began the journalism career of one of the Sun-Telegraph's few female reporters at least, one of the few who weren't confined to the society pages.

Mrs. Coyne of Allison Park, who died Tuesday at 78 of pneumonia, reported one of the biggest local news stories of the early 1950s: the gas explosion that killed the six Chismar of Penn Hills, Mary Frances "Fran" Chismar of Penn Hills and Roseanne Henkel of Florida; and one granddaughter. Friends can call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and tomorrow at the Patrick Lanigan Funeral Home, 700 Linden East Pittsburgh. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m.

Monday in St. Maurice Church, Ardmore Boulevard, Forest Hills, followed by burial in Good Shepherd Cemetery in Monroeville. children of Robert and Rose Moulis on Dec. 5, 1952. Her compassionate coverage of the North Side tragedy stood out on the pages of the Sun-Telegraph, a Hearst-owned newspaper.

"Suffer the little children to come unto me," her story began, according to Mrs. Coyne niece, Mickey Dillman of Allison Park. The use of the Bible quote led Dillman, who was 17 at the time, to realize that her droll and husky-voiced aunt was more sentimental than she thought Mrs. Coyne was also praised for her 1953 interview with Christine Jorgensen, the ex-GI who drew national attention the year before when he underwent an operation to change his gender to female. The interview began: "Christine Jorgenson sic is like a lot of gals she's waiting for the right man to come "Jorgensen wrote to her and mentioned how graceful and kind the interview and the article were when other people were poking fun or being rude or making fun of the whole thing," Bonnie Coyne, of Allison Park, said.

Jim Moore, a former Sun-Telegraph reporter, said yesterday that Mrs. Coyne was "a good reporter and a good writer" in a time when, according to Dillman, women weren't accorded bylines very often. Mrs. Coyne lea the "Sun-Telly" in 1954, six years before it was sold to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Before her stint on the newspaper, Mrs.

Coyne was a stewardess for Capital Airlines. Always stylish and impeccably dressed, she disliked the stewardess uniform cho sen by the airline and briefly got away with wearing her own uniform, picked right out of a local department store, her family said. She was born and raised in Craf-ton but moved to Aluson Park after marrying James J. Coyne owner of the popular Oakland Cafe on Forbes Avenue. She later majored in English at the University of Pittsburgh and was known for her wide vocabulary and ability to choose just the right words to describe things.

Dillman said children in the family who were having problems with their writing assignments were "always told to go see Aunt Ruth." After leaving the Sun-Telegraph and raising her children, Mrs. Coyne wrote book reviews for the Rocky Mountain News in Denver, where her best friend was the book editor. She was "crushed" when the Pittsburgh Press folded irt; 1992, having seen the Sun-Telegraph suffer a similar fate, Bonnie Coyne said. Mrs. Coyne was in Florida visiting her son Christopher M.

Coyne of Tampa when she died. She had been suffering from emphysema, he said. In addition to her son and daughter, Mrs. Coyne is survived by another son, James J. Coyne III of San Francisco; a sister, Betty Moran of White Oak; and a brother, Donald McGregor of Upper St.

Clair. Friends will be received tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at John A. Freyvogel Funeral Home, 4900 Centre A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St.

Ursula Church in Hampton. LAUREAN RUGAMBWA First African to become a Roman Catholic cardinal laam. Pope John Paul II described Cardinal Rugambwa as "the first cardinal among all Africa's children and a close colleague of myself and my predecessors." The Catholic Church in Africa has been growing steadily in size and influence in the past 40 years, and, according to Vatican estimates, is now home to 100 million Catholics. There are now 11 African cardinals. "We must be open-minded," he said during the 70th session of the Second Vatican Council.

"In the missions, where separation is a fact of everyday life, we have to be ready to cooperate with non-Catholics in all possible ways." He also stressed the importance of involving the lay community in the work of the church. In a condolence message to Bishop Polycarp Pengo of Dar-es-Sa- and of the growing importance of Catholic congregations in parts of the world that had once been the domain of European missionaries. Cardinal Rugambwa was an early and active participant in the Second Vatican Council, advocating the internationalization of the Roman Curia and the adaptation of the liturgy to local customs and music. He was also a strong voice for ecumenism, preaching collaboration with other Christian denominations. By Celestine Bohlen The New York Times Cardinal Laurean Rugambwa, who in 1960 become the first African cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church, died Monday in Dar-es-Salaam, the Tanzanian Episcopal Conference announced.

He was 85. His elevation to the College of Cardinals by Pope John XXIH was a signal of the church's recognition of its debt to its non-European clergy, CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING LATEST DEATHS To our readers: The Post-Gazette's comprehensive listings of recent deaths include two types of obituaries.
