PITTSBURGH POST-OAZETTE THURSDAY, MAY 16.1996 TUI REGIOn fe-M a 1 Former investor to sue McClatchy By Jon Schmitz Post-Gazette Staff Writer William I. Snyder, the Sewickley metals dealer who pulled out of Kevin McClatchy's investment group before it bought the Pirates this year, has filed a notice of intent to sue McClatchy and the attorney who helped him consummate the deal. The notice, filed yesterday in Common Pleas Court, named as defendants McClatchy, who is now the Pirates' managing general partner, attorney David DeNinno and the law firm Reed Smith Shaw McClay, and three corporate entities that were set up as part of the transaction Pittsburgh Baseball Partnership, Pittsburgh Pirates Acquisition Inc. and Pittsburgh Baseball Holdings Inc. Snyder withdrew his $5 million commitment to the McClatchy investment group in January after a dispute over how much control he would have in the day-to-day operation of the franchise.

He later expressed displeasure with McClatchy's public statements about the withdrawal particularly an assertion that it had come at a late stage of the deal. Snyder had notified McClatchy of his intention to withdraw in mid-January. McClatchy did not reveal it publicly until Feb. 2, three days before a deadline to submit purchase documents to Major League Baseball's ownership committee. "Obviously, I'm disappointed he dropped out at this late stage of the game," McClatchy said at the time.

Snyder's withdrawal appeared to jeopardize McClatchy's effort to raise enough money to buy the team, but he found other investors. Diners receive crash course Car smashes through Strip restaurant door By Johnna A. Pro Post-Gazette Staff Writer Inside Papa J's Mercato in the Strip District yesterday, lunchtime diners were greeted by the sights and smells of an authentic Italian market pungent cheeses, colorful vegetables, fabulous desserts. At tables big and small, customers, chatted, ate and considered the menu choices, while the staff attended to them, all seemingly oblivious to the chaos outside on Smallman street where a cadre of police, medics, curious onlookers and witnesses milled about. 1 Just minutes earlier, an elderly man lost control of his car while backing up, slammed into a passing car then lurched forward and crashed through a custom-made glass garage door that opens into the cafe area of Papa J's Mercato.

That section of the 6-month-old restaurant was not open at the time and no one was injured. "He backed up real fast. He hit that car and boom! he came forward," said Wayne MialM, who witnessed the crash. Mialki and Mark Billings, employ- 1 Peter DianaPost-Gazette Workers at Papa J's Mercato in the Strip District sweep up debris after a car was driven into the building yesterday. went flying backward," Billings said.

"His head just snapped back and forth." Billings managed to jump out of harm's way before Galaleo's car hit a car that had been parked next to his. Galaleo declined medical treatment. City police at the scene, along with paramedics, persuaded him to allow them to tow his car and arrange a ride home for him. Police said they did not expect to file charges. ees of Budget Heating and Air Conditioning in Bloomneld, were inside the restaurant working when the white Ford Taurus driven by Rudolph Galaleo, 91, of the North Side, crashed through the window.

"My foot slipped off the brake," Galaleo said, describing how the soles on the black shoes he was wearing tended to get slick. He had gone to the Strip District to buy some produce, and was pulling out to leave when the accident occurred. Galaleo, who had parked his car perpendicular to Papa J's, had been backing out of the parking space when he slammed into a car driven by Meiyu Laing of Monroeville, an employee of pie China Palace restaurant. Laing and his companion, Lien Feng, had gone to the Strip to shop. They were driving away from Downtown as they passed the restaurant located at 19th and Small-man streets.

Both said they were wearing seat belts and were not injured. "He backed up and hit that car. Then he put it in drive and the car came right through the window. All we heard was this loud screeching and we saw the tires spinning," said Billings, pointing to a black tire mark on the restaurant floor. At that point, Billings said he tried to climb into the car to turn off the ignition and help Galaleo get out.
