OBITUARIES OTHER DEATHS LARRY HATCH Founder of Eat'n Park chain and produced the first Chalone Vineyard vintage the next year. Chalone, with vineyards in Monterey, Napa, Sonoma and San Luis Obispo counties, was the first publicly owned wine company in the United States. John Wells, 61, British satirist who amused millions with his portrayal of Margaret Thatcher's husband as hen-pecked, golf-mad and gin-loving, died of cancer Sunday at his London home. Mr. Wells was a prolific writer, playwright and actor.

But it was through his portrayals of Denis Thatcher's life as the spouse of Britain's formidable prime minister from 1979-90 that Wells gained national prominence. Mr. Wells' play "Anyone for Denis?" in which he played Thatcher, was a hit in London's West End. Thomas Crawford Mayers, 88, a retired department store executive and former mayor of Stamford, died of pneumonia Dec. 20 in Stamford.

Mr. Mayers was nominated by the Republican Party as a fresh face in the 1963 Stamford mayoral election, which he won on a ledge to reverse downtown blight le succeeded in marshaling support for a revitalization plan and was credited with preparing the ground for the city's corporate boom of the 1970s. He also tried to improve conditions for low-income families who lived in substandard housing and those displaced by slum clearance. A backlash cost him re-election to a third term in 1967. Mr.

Mayers, who was bom in Dorchester, attended Boston Latin School and graduated from Harvard College in 1930. Opting for a career in merchandising, he started at Macy's, then went to work for Bloomingdale's, where he was manager of the Stamford store and director of branch store development Former U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Clyde Lee Conrad, 50, convicted of treason in 1990 for leaking NATO and American secrets to the Soviet bloc, died in the prison in Koblenz, Germany, where he was serving a life sentence. He was 50.

Prosecutors in Koblenz confirmed yesterday that Conrad died last Thursday, apparently from heart failure. An autopsy has been ordered Mr. Conrad was convicted in 1990 of masterminding an espionage ring that sold highly sensitive information to Hungarian and Czechoslovak intelligence agents from 1975 through 1985. Wallace J. Campbell, 87, a founder and former president and board member of the international aid and development organization CARE, died Wednesday of pneumonia at a nursing home in Los Angeles.

Mr. Campbell enlisted the help of 22 relief and service organizations in starting CARE in 1945 when he was director of the New York office of the Cooperative League of USA. CARE's first mission was to alleviate food shortages in Europe following the end of World War II. Over the years, the organization has helped 1 billion people in more than 120 countries. Mr.

Campbell also was public affairs director for Nationwide Insurance, then president of the Cooperative Housing Foundation. Richard Graff, 60, a vintner who co-founded the American Food and Wine Institute, died Friday after flying his private plane into a power pole. Mr. Graff, who was flying alone, was trying to land his single-engine Cessna at Salinas, airport when it crashed into a power pole and a greenhouse before bursting into flames. Though trained as a musician, Mr.

Graff took over a small, remote vineyard in Soledad on California's Central Coast in 1965 By Torsten Ove Post-Gazette Staff Writer He came up with the idea for chipped ham while an executive at Isaly's and later founded the Eat'n Park, chain of restaurants, one of the most visible corporate empires in Western Pennsylvania. But Larry Hatch didn't want any credit never granted interviews, never talked about an institution as locally recognizable as Kennywood, Heinz or the inclines on Mount Washington. He was so reclusive that even after his death Sunday, his family and his company refused to release information about him for his obituary. Mr. Hatch, of Ml Lebanon, died of cardiac arrest at St.

Clair Memorial Hospital, where he was admitted after breaking his hip in a fall. He was 91. At the grand opening of his first 13-seat store in 1949 on Saw Mill Run Boulevard, Mr. Hatch was so nervous he threw up behind a sign during the festivities. He needn't have worried.

With its 10 carhops rushing out to serve double-decker hamburgers and fries to customers in their cars, the caused such a traffic jam that it had to close and regroup six hours after it opened. From that auspicious beginning, the of the local restaurant business was born. Today, Eat'n Park controls an estimated 40 percent of the family restaurant market in the region. there were 30. Eat'n Park arrived before McDonald's and became a destination for generations of teen-agers in the era of poodle skirts and saddle shoes.

But by the 1960s, it was losing g-ound to the Golden Arches, so Mr. atch expanded its dining rooms and added hostesses. In 1971, the chain phased out its last carhop service, and the next year the company built a 200-seat restaurant in Butler and introduced its first children's menu. In 1973, Mr. Hatch hired Jim Broadhurst, a Pittsburgh National Bank executive, to run Eat'n Park's day-to-day operations.

Broadhurst is now chairman and chief executive officer. Basil Cox is resident a position that had been eld by Bill Peters from 1950 to 1971. Over the years, Eat'n Park has expanded cautiously, to Erie, Youngstown, Morgantown and Somerset. Always conservative, the company has also changed slowly to suit the times, introducing 24-hour service, nonsmoking sections, bakeries at the front of the store and light-menu options. But the chain has also kept one foot in the past offering grilled sticky buns and the traditional hamburgers, milkshakes and fries.

Arrangements, which were incomplete yesterday, are being handled by Laughlin Funeral Home, 222 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon. moved to Welland, Ont, when he was 7, and he grew up a fine tennis and baseball player as a teen-ager. After high school, he sold cars for a time, then moved to Lancaster, N.Y., when he was 22, to work as an assistant manager at G.C. Murphy.

In New York, he married Gladys Neff, who survives him along with their four daughters. At 25, he was traveling on a job interview when he got hisoig break. On a train from Buffalo to Cincinnati, he met Henry Isaly and impressed him so much that Isaly offered him a job in Pittsburgh as an assistant manager. He later became purchasing manager and general manager. His father had died in 1940, and Mr.

Hatch's sisters followed him to Pittsburgh. Only his brother stayed behind in Canada. Mr. Hatch wasn't yet rich, but he did have two big cars and a live-in maid, and he looked after his sisters. For years, he had talked about opening his own restaurant.

In the late 1940s, he capitalized on the California trend of catering to customers in their cars. He bought the rights to the Big Boy trademark for the Pittsburgh market Now he needed a name for the enterprise. At the time, "Park and Eat" signs were everywhere on American highways. Mr. Hatch couldn't copyright the slogan, so he decided to reverse it.

After the first store proved to be a hit, he opened a second in Avalon. By 1956, he had 10, and by 1965, The corporation, based in Robinson, employs about 5,500 people at more than 56 restaurants and rings up annual sales well above $100 million. Among the established favorites: Smiley Cookies and strawberry pie. The man behind the success story is harder to pin down. A few family members who agreed to discuss his life and his legacy said he was genuinely self-effacing, an intensely private man worth millions who was generous to his employees and his relatives.

But tie rarely talked about himself or the corporation, which is privately held. It reportedly took much cajoling just to get him to agree to nave his portrait displayed at company headquarters. Up until nine months ago, when he suffered a minor stroke, he went in to the office every day to work. Even before he started Eat'n Park, he had helped shape the eating habits of a generation of Pittsburghers. As the general manager of The Isaly Dairy another local institution, he made chipped ham a hit in the 1930s by shaving it razor-thin while customers watched.

He also had a hand in the creation of the Klondike, the chocolate-covered ice cream bar every child grew up Mr. Hatch was born Claire G. Hatch in Auburn, N.Y., the oldest of Lawrence and Mary Hatch's nine children. He didn't much like the name Claire and went by Larry.
