Cablevision of Westchester the largest cable television service has elimi nated a popular public broadcast ing channel and will drop three more early next month to eliminate duplicate broadcasting Ira Birnbaum general manager of the New Rochelle based compa ny said WLIW (Channel 27) a Long Island based PBS station was dropped from the UA Colum bia airwaves Wednesday and WNYE WWHT and WEDW will follow suit Nov 5 WNYE a PBS station out of New York City and now offered on Channel 1 will be replaced by CBN the Christian oriented Cable Broadcasting Network WWHT is a Newark NJ station that will be replaced on Channel 23 by Bravo And WEDW a Connecticut PBS station will be replaced by Span In addition out of the 40 chan nels offered by UA Columbia 14 will be switched around to accom modate the losses of the PBS sta tions and the additions of new services Birnbaum however insisted Thursday that UA Columbia view ers would lose few programs be cause of the changes Most of what is offered on the eliminated PBS channels he said can be seen on other cable and UH stations or example said Birnbaum most Channel 27 shows can either be seen on Channel 13 (WNET) and Westchester viewers with spe cial aerials can pick up most PBS programs on the UH Channel 21 idea is to get more variety and more value on the cable tele vision said Birnbaum are not at all cutting back In fact we are expanding
