OMAHA WORLD HERALD LIVING RIDAY NOVEMBER 6 2009 3E Musty odor may signal problem Dear Heloise: I recently bought a house and the linen closet in the hallway has a musty smelland damp feeling I placed bak ing soda in it to absorb odor and dampness but not working Help! I have to crack the door open sometimes to it out and all my towels smell musty and damp CM Jerger via mail Yuck! Baking soda is a great odor neutral izer but first concerned that you have to open the door to dry it out If that works that tells me either there is a water leak or moisture coming from somewhere You can try these hints: 1 Charcoal either plain bar becue briquettes or activated charcoal found in pet stores Charcoal is great for neutraliz ing odors 2 Cat box filler clay type cat box filler in a margarine tub Litter is wonderfully absorbent and sometimes works as a lastresort If these hints help need to be a detective and try to figure out what the dampness is and where coming from If it persists you should call a profes sional not going to go away on its own! Also if left alone it could get worse and grow into black mold which is extremely hazardous to your health Heloise Dear Heloise: Wednesday is leftover night and we clean out the refrigerator because Thurs day is garbage day If food is not eaten it is tossed No chance of anything going bad or being for gotten Nancy via mail Dear Heloise: Tackle boxes just for fishing equipment! They make great organizers for facial care products makeup dusting powders perfumes etc Just store under the vanity or grab and go! This is especially nice if several girls share a bath room Hayes Schertz Texas Dear Heloise: or a quick change place an extra sheet set and blanket under your mattress When time to change them the replacement is right at your fingertips Between a mattress and box spring is also a great place to store several blankets (lay flat) during warmer months Cheryl via fax Dear Heloise: Our family nev er seems to finish a box of cereal We always end up with several boxes with just a little at the bot tom I mixed all the extras togeth er then I used approximately one bag of marshmallows and a stick of butter (both melted) to make a crispy bar snack for the family It was a big hit and I have to throw away the cereal Mary in Texas Dear Heloise: Hang a long piece of chain on a hanger in a hall closet near the front door Using clothespins this makes a great place to collect gloves scarves hats just clip to the chain until needed again Erin via mail Dear Heloise: My husband has a problem with colorblindness I write the color with a permanent marker on the inside pocket of his trousers The pockets usually are white This makes it much easier for him to match with shirts May Universal City Texas Dear Heloise: I love my liquid yogurt but I hate to throw away the cute little plastic bottle So I found another way to use it They make lovely little vases for small bouquets of flowers Now they are all over my house Madeleine Adams San Antonio Contact the writer: HeloiseHeloisecom A tOPSIMBAB The Top singles as they ap pear in this week's Billboard magazine: 1 Blueprint 3" Jay Roc NationAG 2 BeBe CeCe Winans 3 Look To Whitney Houston AristaRMG 4 ar Gone (EP)" Drake Young MoneyCash MoneyUniversal MotownUMRG 5 Mario JRMG 6 Of An Imperfect Angel" Mariah Carey islandIDJMG 7 Trey Songz Song BookAtlanticAG 8 "BLACKsummers'night" Maxwell Columbia Sony Music 9 Me ree!" Two of my cous ins are having showers because this time around going to be a girl instead of a boy I already spent plenty on the showers for the first kids and feel it is right to ex pect people to spend any more your take? Out of Money Dear Out: According to Peggy Post it is OK to give showers for subsequent children but only if the guest list is limited to very close relatives and friends and any remaining guests in clude those who already attend ed a shower for the first child And you can of course decline the invitation Dear Annie: I want to add an other perspective to in the nonreligious wom an who is considering marriage to a minister As a young wife I learned that is de fined differently by each mem ber of the congregation It take long to realize I going to live up to most of the expectations Some found it inconceivable that I sing in the choir or play the pia no Others felt I should be more capable of leading a prayer group Some thought my inept ness in the kitchen was proof my husband married the wrong woman My response? married for And apparently it shows because after 40 years people say they can still see the spark in our eyes when we look at each other Meant for Each Other scene Dear Meant: Members of a congregation somehow feel en titled to pass judgment on the spouse It comes with the territory You have handled it well Dear Annie: Hurray for Some Clothes the man who objected to the trend of women wearing clothing push up bras and plunging I teach at a community col lege and am routinely barraged by students with practically half their breasts back at me It distracts me from the sub ject matter and a happily married female! I imagine what it must be like for my male colleagues let alone other stu dents trying to get an education no prude Some of these styles might be nice in another setting I wish I could tell my students to button up but probably be sued Cover Up and Learn Contact the writer: anniesmailboxcomastnet fl Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Annies Mailbox i'JUW OPEiJI (12:30 PM 2:45 5:05) 7:15 (DP) i 12:00 AM LAYI a Reserved Your Seats atmarcustheatrescom LjWATBraJ MARCUS' nmc ravemotionpictures I OPEN!
