Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Saturday, September 17, 1W OBITUARIES Jean Childs Young, educator, rights activist dies at 61 r, By The Associated Press ' '- ATLANTA - Jean Childs Young, 61, an educator, civil and human rights activist and the wife of former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young, died here yesterday. She died of liver cancer at Crawford Long Hospital of Emory University. Mrs. Young, a native of Marion, Ala., was diagnosed with cancer in early 1991, not long after her husband's unsuccessful 1990 campaign for governor and Atlanta's successful bid to host the 1996 Olympics. - She played a major role in both efforts, campaigning for her husband in 1990 and traveling to Africa, the Middle East and Europe to gamer support for Atlanta's Olympics' bid. Mrs. Young received the 1989 NAACP Distinguished Leadership Award and the 1993 YWCA Woman of Achievement Award. Professor Richard Russell of Pitt biological sciences .Richard Lawson Russell, professor and assistant chairman of the department of biological sciences at the University of Pittsburgh, died Sept. 9 of cancer at Presbyterian University Hospital. He was 53, and lived in Point Breeze. ;Besides his teaching and research activi-' ties,. Dr. Russell served for five years as commissioner of the Dynamo Soccer Recreation League, in which 650 youngsters participate. A graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard University, he received a doctorate in genetics and physics from the California Institute of Technology. He had previously taught at Cornell University and Cal Tech before he came to Pitt, where he was employed for 17 years. .Surviving are his wife, Dr. Barbara At-tardi Russell; two daughters, Kerstin Arushna of New York City and Dr. Laura D. Attardi of Cambridge, Mass.; two sons, Daniel A. and David S., both of Point Breeze; his mother, Dr. Elizabeth S. of Somesville, Maine; his father, Dr. William L. of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; a sister, Evelyn R. of Minneapolis; and two brothers, Dr. John S. of Howell, Mich., and James J. of Northeast Harbor, Maine. A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Oct. 17 in Heinz Memorial Chapel on the Pitt campus. Arrangements by Burton L. Hirsch Chapel. W. Clyde Simpson, 94, retired teacher, coach W. Clyde Simpson, a former high school principal, football and basketball coach and schoolteacher died yesterday of a heart attack at Baptist Homes Nursing Center, Mt. Lebanon. He was 94. He was principal of Franklin Township High School, where he also coached football and basketball, from 1925 to 1936. For the next two years, he taught English at schools in Teaneck, N.J., where he also coached football and basketball. He then returned to the Pittsburgh area, where he taught English at Mellon Junior High School, Mt. Lebanon, from 1939 until his retirement in 1965. A native of Parnassus, Westmoreland County, he was formerly an elder at Parnassus Presbyterian Church and also at Mt. Lebanon United Presbyterian Church, where he was a member for more than 40 years. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Anderson Simpson; and a son, Jeffrey of New York City. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 !i.m. Monday in Mt. Lebanon United Presby-erian Church, Washington Road. John Saladiak, 76, retired Internal Revenue agent John Saladiak, a retired Internal Revenue Service field agent, died Thursday of complications of Parkinson's disease at his home in Ross. He was 76. He was employed for more than 20 years with the IRS, retiring in 1984. A 1963 Duquesne University graduate, he served as Air Force officer during World War II, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.' Surviving are his wife, Dorothy, four sisters, Ann Birdy of Mt, Lebanon, Mary Drevna of Avalon, Rosella Doyle of Green Tree and Stella Newman of Springfield, Mo.; and a brother, Stephen of Mt. Lebanon. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in Bock Funeral Home, 1500 Mount Royal Blvd., Glenshaw.
