"He would strike out just about everybody in a game and nobody could score off him." Little has changed since Little League. Harriger, a 5-foot-llVi, 170 pound senior righthander at Ford City, has pitched 82 innings this year and struck out 148. He has given up only three earned runs and 32 hits while compiling a 10-1 record. And he has made most hitters look like they were still in Little League. "The kid just has phenomenal control," Mains said.

"The biggest problem is teaching him not to throw a strike. He has to learn how to waste a pitch sometimes." The New York Mets thought enough of Harriger that they selected him in the 18th round of last week's draft. No Division I colleges were interested in Harriger before the draft, but he said he still has not decided whether to sign with the Mets. He won't make up his mind until Ford City (19-3) finishes its season. Harriger has won four games in the WPIAL and state playoffs. Harriger, who also plays shortstop, will most likely pitch in the semifinals.

If he doesn't lead the Sabers to a win with his arm, he can do it with his bat. He is batting .409 with three triples and 25 runs scored. It seems just as easy as Little League. "I always played baseball," said Harriger, who has a 21-2 record the last two seasons. "I wasn't allowed to play football because my mom thought I would get hurt.

In basketball, I just play pickup games." And in baseball, Harriger would like to pick up a gold medal in Shippensburg. "If I sign with the Mets, I'll do the best I can and maybe make it to the majors someday," Harriger said. "But I'd like to win states first, that's for sure."
