Bike," says the 25-year-old Squirrel Hill resident. "I guess it was sort of like an honorary doctorate." Either way, the title derives from Chew's incredible mileage. Lately, he has been gearing up all the more for the race that marks his third anniversary as a professional. On June 14, Chew takes part in the nation's professional road racing championship, the Corestates, held in Philadelphia. Chew competes as a free agent, meaning he has no full-time sponsor.

He was the top free agent in the 1985 Corestates, finishing 12th, and the second highest free agent in the 1986 race, finishing 25th. "The bikers who have sponsors are sponsored the whole year and they're basically on salary," says Chew. "I'm not on salary at all." Indeed, instead of moving to a warmer climate to train year-round as other pros usually do, Chew simply stays here and rides all winter. To prepare for Corestates, Chew has been riding centuries (100 miles) at a clip of 20 mph every day for the pas two months. For this race, he has been given a new bike, a $1,500 14-speed by Cannondale and the Pittsburgh Pro Bycycles shop in Squirrel Hill.

"I've already worn out two headsets," says Chew. "The headset is the part that you steer with. Roads in the Pittsburgh area are rough on that part of the bike. It causes the bike to lean to one side or the other." So far this season, Chew has been racing only locally, winning the 44-mile Seneca Valley Road Race sponsored by the Allegheny Cycling Association and taking part in the club's Wednesday night circuit races in the Pittsburgh Zoo parking lot. Chew has been the club's champion the past three years.

In the Philadelphia race, Chew will have a 156-mile course that Includes a steep hill try 4- tm Mi? Birthday boy In good company. (AP) George Karl says it was a "sensational" move by the Golden State Warriors to land Don Nelson for their front office, dismissing the notion that he might feel threatened as "paranoia and negativism." "I'm elated," Karl said from Chicago after the announcement last week that Nelson will join the NBA team as part-owner and, in Nelson's words, "daily operations guy." Karl, a 1969 Penn Hills graduate who took the Warriors' coaching Job a year ago after Nelson recommended him, frequently cited the influence of the then-coach of the Milwaukee Bucks as a reason for the Warriors' vast improvement in 1986-87. But it has been widely speculated that he would not want the two-time league Coach of the Year looking over his shoulder in Oakland. "I realize that's the perception around the NBA," Karl said.
