blacks interpreted by white authorities and the National Guard as an armed insurrection whites reacted by taking up arms Black Tulsa thought it was be ing invaded by whites and so it struck first White Tulsa thought it was be ing invaded by blacks and so it struck back only harder (These divergent perceptions evident in the accounts of the time echo now in and assessments The elevator incident The first filing you have to know Little john says is the incident that supposedly started the Tulsa riot never happened at all Most Tulsans who know any stliing about the riot know that it started with some sort of alterca tion between a black man and a white woman on an elevator in downtown Tulsa The most widely repeated ver sion is that on May 30 1921 a 19 year old bootblack named Dick Rowland went into the Drexel Building between Third and ourth streets on Main to use the fourth floor 1 rest room While leaving Row land somehow came into contact with the 17 year old elevator op erator Sarah Page She screamed he ran and a clerk from Clothiers called the police Police arrested Rowland the following morning and rumors that he would be lynched precip itated a confrontation between blacks and whites at the court house where Rowland was be ing held Shooting started at about 10:30 pm continued into the small hours of the morning then resumed with a vengeance at dawn on June 1 as whites swept into the Greenwood dis trict The alleged was al most immediately labeled a mis understanding Page refused to press charges and police said Rowland had simply bumped in to her Littlejohn however goes even further He says black Tulsans have long believed the elevator incident never even happened he said "The building was Almost certainly was May 30 was Memorial Day and an advertisement in the May 29 Tulsa World says the store would be closed in observance Whether an elevator operator was on duty is another matter The elevator served more than two dozen private offices on the Drexel upper floors Littlejohn said he believes Rowland was part of the plot to run black residents out of Greenwood and convert the ar ea with its easy rail access to industrial use had to have that Littlejohn said "It have mattered who lived there black or According to Littlejohn Row land was a pimp and Page was one of his girls Rowland Little john said was taken from the jail on the afternoon of May 31 before the crowd arrived and was transported to Kansas City with Page Pressure to sell: Littlejohn says Greenwood knew some thing was up even before Row land was arrested Pressure on black residents to sell their prop erty to certain real estate men both white and black caused members of a group called the African Blood Brotherhood to ask for help from surrounding communities In effect Littlejohn confinns reports in the white press of the time that heavily armed militants had moved into Greenwood just before the riot They did so he says to protect it It seems odd to some that if Greenwood were the ultimate objective Rowland was moved from the city jail at hirst and TULSA PRESS 111 PRESENTS CN HARCE 17 Millennial CI tdeln!
