PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE SUNDAY, MARCH 17, 1996 By Dennis B. Roddy Post-Gazette Staff Writer Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams had called for organizers of the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Pittsburgh to put a huge, green ribbon around the reviewing stand. Nobody put the ribbon up, but Adams and his visit to Pittsburgh last month, and the IRA bombing of London that came just days afterward, were on some minds as Pittsburgh's Irish community gathered for their annual holiday revels yesterday. Pittsburgh's St.

Patrick's Day Parade committee says its event is the second-largest in the nation, after New York's, and organizers are famed for pushing ahead with the event regardless of the odds. In 1993, when the snowstorm of the century closed roads statewide and created a major emergency across the northeast, Pittsburgh's parade went ahead. This year, the peace in Northern Ireland, broken by the end of an 18-month-long ceasefire, was on parade organizers' minds. "It's been on our minds, but it doesn't dampen the fact that we believe there will be peace in said Kevin Donohue, who heads the Allegheny County Ancient Order of Hibernians, one of the parade's organizing groups. Donohue had returned from a White House reception Friday honoring Irish Taoiseach John Bruton.

Adams, speaking before a crowd at the David Lawrence Convention Center last month, urged organizers to put up the green ribbon as part of a lobbying campaign to free IRA prisoners now in British jails. Donohue said many parade participants would wear the ribbons, but that one around the reviewing stand was impractical. What is still practical, participants said yesterday, is a peace settlement in Northern Ireland, where the IRA has fought a 25-year guerrilla war to unite the six-county province with the adjacent Republic of Ireland. "The momentum is toward peace," said Mayor Murphy, who co-hosted the Adams visit ana stood on the reviewing stand as unit after unit rolled down the Boulevard of the Allies in only slightly chilly weather. Crowd estimates varied, out appeared to easily top 25,000.

Murphy had just returned from a New York dinner, where he was honored as one of the country's 100 leading Irish Americans. He said the end of the cease-fire in Northern Ireland has put renewed pressure on Adams from both sides. Adams' oartv, Sinn Fein which is Gaelic for "Ourselves Alone," is the political wing of the provisional Irish Republican Army. Five days after Adams visited, the IRA broke its cease-fire with a massive bomb in London's docklands area that killed two men and injured dozens of others. Although refusing to condemn the bombing, Adams said he had no advance warning the IRA was preparing to break the cease-fire.

Murphy said American Sinn Fein supporters who helped organize the visit telephoned the mayor's office to apologize. While he has no regrets about helping to host Adams during his two-day fund-raising visit last month, Murphy said he would hesitate to issue an invitation to return. "I'd like to see a cease-fire declared first and the peace process move forward" he said. tor Emotions mixed a bn Oili onj as city celebrates nn.v eUit B-6 CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING Cont from pag B-8 ton Road, Patterson with her pastor, the Rever- JOHN F.
