PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE. SUNDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1993 B-7 SAM WANAMAKER, 74, ACTOR AND DIRECTOR crusaded to reconstruct Globe Theatre LONDON (AP). Actor and director Sam Wanamaker died at his London home yesas his long-held dream of rebuilding Shakespeare's Globe Theater finally neared reality. He was 74. Wanamaker died after a five-year fight against cancer, his family said.

Wanamaker, who was born in Chicago in 1919 and got his early stage training there, worked in Britain when he was blacklisted in the 1950s after 1 the McCarthy hearings. He lived in Britain for most of his In 1957, he created the New Shakespeare Cultural Center in Liverpool, northern England. Two years later, he performed a highly praised lago in "Othello" at Stratford-on-Avon. Although he played a wide range of roles on stage and in films in the United States and Britain, Wanamaker became best known for his tireless quest for a living memorial to William Shakespeare in London. In 1949, he visited London and went to the site of the famous Globe Theater on the south bank of the River Thames, where Shakespeare's plays were produced in his lifetime.

He was astonished to find nothing but a plaque, and the idea of establishing a new Globe was formed. It was not easy. He spent more than years overcoming bureaucratic obstacles and occasional hostility. Kimble Funeral Home, Princeton, N.J. (O) NEELY, Corona, 93, of East Liberty, died Dec. Moses Gunn, 64, award-winning TV, stage, screen actor GUILFORD, Conn. (AP) Moses Gunn, an award-winning actor of theater, motion pictures and television, died Thursday of complications from asthma. He was 64.

Mr. Gunn died at his home, according to the public relations firm Dale C. Olson Associates Inc. of Los Angeles. Once a nominee for a Tony Award as best actor for "Poison Tree," he won an Obie award as best actor for "First Breeze of Summer" in 1975 and a Moses Gunn Distinguished Performer award for plays with the Negro Ensemble Company in 1967- 68.

He also won NAACP Image Awards as best supporting actor for the film "Ragtime" in 1980 and for the play "Fool for Love" at the Los Angeles Theater Center. He was nominated for a supporting actor Emmy award for his television performance in Gunn was known for his Shakespearean performances at the Yale Repertory Theatre, Lincoln Center and the New York Shakespeare Festival, most notably in "Measure for Measure," "Titus Andronicus," and "Romeo and Juliet." Pierre Holmes, wartime broadcaster to Resistance AVIGNON, France (AP) Pierre Holmes, who used his nightly British Broadcasting Corp. program during World War II to pass coded messages to the French Resistance, died Dec. 7. He was 81.

Mr. Holmes died at L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, a village where he lived near the southern city of Avignon. Janet Margolin, 50, movie and television actress The New York Times Janet Margolin, an actress with a string of roles in the 1960s and '70s, including parts in two Woody Allen movies, died Friday at her home in Los Angeles. She was 50. The cause was ovarian cancer, a cousin, Ruth Malin, said. At age .18, Ms.

Margolin won her first professional role as the lead in "Daughter of Silence" on Broadway. But she was better known for her film and television parts, particularly as an emotionally disturbed teen-ager in they 1962 movie "David and Lisa" and Woody Allen's girlfriend, Louise, in "Take the Money and Run" in 1969. She also played one of Allen's former wives i in "Annie Hall," a 1977 film. Born in New York City, Ms. Margolin graduated from the High School of Performing Arts in 1961 and earned a role in "Daughter of Silence" that summer, after working for $9.65 a week building and painting scenery at the New York Shake- Sam Wanamaker, shown in one of his movie quest for a living memorial to William American," he once said.
