The Bible school on Sunday will offer a special Mothers' Day program. STALIN AS TRIP TOMORROW FOR LOCAL KNIGHTS We salute the war mother! We" salute the peace mother! The heart of American humanity beats for mothers at this season when the lyric of the hills and the bloom of the rose is in the heart of nature. We hurry our white carnations into place for it is more than greetings to the mothers. It is their coronation. We crown them queens today and in their jubilee' pro-cession every loyal son and daughter with a spark of humanity marches.

All the mothers live today for none are really dead. We realize so well now their immortality in the per-, fumed thoughts and turns and swings ol our souls. We are seeing mother again, no, not in the grave, but in the home when tve-came from school, or work, or when we came back from the war. The dreamy love in the soft brown or blue or gray eyes of mother still lingers with us as the spirit of a genial May day. The hair whitened by age and trouble and sacrifice seems to us eiderdown of paradise, and the furrows across her brow seem sanctified as the glory spots of heaven.

Yes we have wonderful mothers! We had good mothers be-fore the war, but when thcgwar Miss M-irjorie Sillier maae a nil leading the music. LATTER OH 9 -'If lb v'-n DAY J'V By FRANK M. STLSLEY with its tremendous shock and storm came, we were awakened to the realization that we had miracle mothers. They gave up their sons and daughters to the public service; they stitched and knitted late into the ner-vous. night; they conformed to a "fasting and self-denial program as to things to eat, all that right, and humanity, and little children and democracy might1 not perish from the earth, but live on freed from the cruel stab of bloody militarism and the menace of autocracy. We crown thee, Mother Hunt, for knitting 108 sweaters for the soldier boys.

And we see those war mothers still, as day after day they prayed that their boys' lives might be spared, but never if it meant disaster for the Allied Cause of Cod and humanity. Their will was the will to win. We see them writing letters to their boys over there, letters bathed with the love and tears as the cross of the Master was bathed with Mother-love. But those letters, ah, those' letters were not weak and simpering, they were dynamic, they were electrified by the grit and endurance of heroines. THE MUSTARD SEED AND THE TREE The Vitality of Mormonism 1 By Dr. JAMES E. TALMAGE Of the Council of the Twelve, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; Salt Lake City, Utah. written, if it be a truthful narrative, it will tell how the spirit of mother helped to inspire sustain the boys as they endured the literal hell of the trenches or heroically went over top to drive back the invaders. Do, you wonder that the dying American soldier gave his last thought and word to mother away back here in his distant California home, where the bird's song is sweetest! And the mothers in these peace times are wonder workers, too.

They are constructive geniuses to build the home. It is almost incredible how some mothers multiply the meal to keep the little home going. It seems like unveiling the heart of God to behold their sacrifices for their children. Yea, that which is most like the heart of Calvary in all this world is the sacrificial heart of the mother. And let us bring an offering to our mothers today.

Let us cast a flower on their sacred green-spot in our hearts. Let the stormy might of war agony be succeeded by the morryng with the rainbow of peace-promise. Let us so think and live and do as not to becloud the balance of their days. May the blessing of heaven be breathed upon the Mother heart. pastor's wife will conduct sPl.

True, at that time a few times six had associated themselves more or less closely with the new religious movement; hut, as the laws of the State specified six as the minimum reqWired procedure relis'ous only that number took part in the legal Today the "Mormon" Church is known by name at least throughout the civilized world as well as amongt most of the semi-cultured peoples ln the remoter parts of the earth and on lhe islands of the sea. Since 1830 every year has witnessed an increase in its membership and an extension of propaganda. The six have increased to ovex half a million adherents. The tiny mustard seed has become a spreading tree, whose branches fur-nlsh food and shelter to the earnest seeker after truth.

The vital character of the Church was evident from the first. It is not too much to affirm that the leaven of "Mormonism" Is leavening the world and its theology. Every studious reader of recent commentaries on the Holy Scrlptues, and of theological treatises in general, is aware of a surprising progressiveness in modern views of things spiritual amounting in many instances to abandonment of what were once rel garded as the fundamentals of orthodoxy. In the new theology "Monnon-ism" has pioneered the way. A few instances may be cited as illustrative.

(1) The unscriptural jyid repellent dogma of inherent degeneracy and the contaminating effect 'Of original sin, by which every child is born vile in the sight and judgment of God, long cast Its dark shadow over the minds of men. From tills conception sprang th practice of infant baptism and the perverted doctrine of assured damnation for babes who die unbaptized. It is cheering to know that practically al Christendom today repudiates belief in the eternal condemnation of unbaptized babes. Behold, baptism is unto repentance to the fulfilling the commandments unto the remission of sins. But little children are alive ln Christ, even from the foundation of the world." (Moroni (2) The one-time general conception of heaven and hell is regarded today as unreasonable, unscriptural and untrue. Belief in graded conditions In the hereafter is widespread, and in this rational substitution of ennobling truth for degrading error, "Mormonism" is again the world's teacher. Joseph Smith avowed that in 1832 he received a Divine revelation, in whichjt was shown that conditions beyond the grave are the direct result" of individual life in mortality, and that distinct kingdoms, each wijth lis own numerous gradations, are provided. (See Doctrine Cov- narKs-feec.

76.) (X) It was long taught that the body is a hindrance and a burden to the spirit. Carried to its inevitable extreme his belief led to the normality of asceticism, monastic Isolation, celibacy, and resultant evils. The spirit of the present age impels to healthful living, to the preservation of the body and the conservation of Its Ood-given functions, to the prudent obseravanceswof sanitation and hygiene, to abstinence from toxicants, narcotics and stimulants generally. As early as February, 1833 the Lord gave a revelation to the Church touching matters of hygiene -and diet. The "Word of Wisdom" it has been rightly called; and its precepta are now proclaimed by the teachers of men.

(See Doctrine Sec. 89.) The vital statistics of the- Latter-day Saints resident In the organized communities of the Church show the effect of even an incomplete observ- ance of the Lord's rules of hygiene, as these figures attest: Among the Latter-day In the country Saints resident in- at large so far-' BROOKLYN CHURCH (PRESBYTERIAN) 12th Avenue and East 15th Street "Church of the Friendly Folk HOWARD I.
