I of W. I TAKEN IN DAYLIGHT BY BURGLAR Diamonds, pearls and other jewelry valued at over $500 were stolen in a bold daylight burglary at the fashionable Faustina apartments at Tenth and Oak streets, yesterday afternoon. They were stolen from Miss Edith Morgan, teacher at the Hawthorne school, Gertrude Morgan, her, sister, teacher at the Manzanita school, who live there. At the same time Mrs. H.

Hansen, 247, East Sixteenth street, reports the loss of a sable neck fur, also, valued ati several hundred dollars. The robbery at the Faustina apartments yesterday afternoon follows closely upon the sensational robbery at the Hotel Claremont last Friday when several hundred dollars worth of jewelry were stolen from the rooms of Mrs. Blanch Raas and Mrs. Emily T. Spring.

Miss Morgan told the police last night that the robbery of her apartments must have occurred between and 8 p. m. She left the room all o'clock to go downtown. When she returned at 8 she found it ransacked. Drawers were open and things turned upside down.

Inspectors Rossick and Sanderson, who investigated last the burglary must have been committed by some one familiar with the fact that Miss Morgan kept, valuable jewelry. The jewelry stolen includes one silver vase, one solid gold Elgin watch, engraved; one cameo, pearl edge; one fleur de lis gold pin; one diamond pin; one necklace of amethyst and pearls; necklace of sapphire and pearls; pearl ring with three pearls in hoop setting: one gold nugget; one pair of pearl earrings. burglar gained entrance by means of a half-inch jimmy. The police think that he must be somewhat of "society burglar," as his activities show considerable knowledge of the Labits and posses. sions of people who move in good circles.

The sable stolen from Mrs. Hansen was described as a particularly valuable specimen. It was a come piete striped Russian sable with and, claws attached. The value the articles IN the two burglaries is easily, do. say the police.

C.

Oullahan has turned over to the police a letter he received in the mail this morning from one whom he believes to be a weak -minded person. The writer says he killed Mrs. George D. Greenwood of Oakland and threatens to kill United States Senator James D. Phelan.

The letter reads: "I am a lone person. I have killed Mrs. G. D. Greenwood and will kill Phelan if he don't do as told.

Shortbefore the writ, obtained by Melly lincoff's attorneys, and directing the immigration authorities show cause why the prisoner's $10.000 bail should not be reduced, filed, the warrant was served and the order issued to take the man to Angel island to await deportation. This automatically places him under the control of the government without any question of bail entering into the matter. DENIES BOMB KNOWLEDGE.

Before Mellincoff was taken to the immigration station he was grilled Captain John O'Meara of again by the police neutrality bureau and District Attorney C. M. Fickert of San Their investigations disclosed the "death list" now being translated, and which, it is said, contained the names of George Greenwood Oakland, Fickert and number of wealthy San Francisco and Oakland residents. Mellincoff denies all knowledge of the Greenwood explosion, although he has admitted being in Oakland on the day it occurred and is unable to give an account of his movements. Mellincoff was also questioned in detail as to the school of Bolshevism in Seattle, which he he operated finally admitted.

He was also queried regarding the San Francisco and Berkeley schools he attempted to organize while: a student at the University of California. ARRESTED IN THE EAST. The move for a habeas corpus writ and the attempt to lower the prisoner's bail were made by John Lawlor, attorney for the "Workers' Defense League," on the ground that Mellincoff's constitutional rights had been violated. REPORT FROM A report from the Philadelphia authorities on Mellincoff has been received by Fickert as follows: "Mellincoff was privy to the bomb outrages in Philadelphia last December. He left some literature with one of his friends which called on all those who received it to rise up and murder the authorities and all capitalists. He is a teacher of anarchy and disloyalty lectures and by devising plays to inculcate anarchistic tendencies.

In New York he was known as the leader of the extreme anarchists, and not only has A large following, but is very influential with them. We expect at any time to get the evidence on him in the Philadelphia bomb outrages that will keep him behind a the bars for a long time, but he covers his tracks with a remarkable astuteness and few of his friends ever know where he resides. "Each major operation, actual or prospective, finds him with A different name. From what the Philadelphia police have found out the murder of a few thousand people for the cause is something he would regard as trifling. For, by Ballot's low, sectors of dry, cold winds blow into it from the northeast, the north and the northwest, and these do better without that with, rain. Suppose a storm enters thenorthwest, directed southeastward under a small azimuth, and the high pressures prevail from Oregon the Gulf of California, it is safe to say, it will suffer a delay of two or three days to Tehachapi. Suppose, contracoming, under the same conditions up north, that low pressures prevail in California, it may rain here on the very day of entrance. His case, on a book charge, was called this morning. Arthur is in the hospital under police guard and the inspector's office and the district attorney's office are still at odds over the filing of a complaint.

"We have done everything we can' do. We are satisfied we have a case against Arthur. We will ask for no more complaints," said Captain James Drew of the inspector 3 office today. William J. Hennessy, assistant district attorney, today made a further explanation of his position in refusing to issue a complaint charging manslaughter.

"I tried a case here some years ago where man while drunk and driving on the wrong side of the street killed high courts ruled testimony showing that the neutral was drunk. They held that a mat who was sober might have done the same thing, Willful carelessness and not drunkenness, the court held, was the element that would determine manslaughter. "I am willing to issue a complaint charging the driving of an automohile while drunk it.

the police bring me enough evidence. But so far there is no evidence, except that fact that liquor was smelled on Ar thur's breath and his incoherent ramblings at the hospital." Attorney Jesse Dunn has been acting as Arthur's adviser. Alameda bathing girls must beware! Enough enough, but' too little too much! It is thus that Chief of Police Jacoby of the Beach City epitomizes the situation along the velvety strand where the wavelets tickle the toelets of fair maida of the mer variety. In epitomizing the chief has reference to bathing costumes, and he has laid the weight of the law's majesty on one galaxy of scant clad maids since the bathing seaopened. No arrests.

son, brief the dictum of the chief 19 not to take away from the pleasure of those who go to Alameda beaches to see and not to swim, but he insists that there be a limit to the view, and 80 it is that the costumes that were considered recherche in 1918 but passe in 1919 must be the standard, fashion and desire notwithstanding. For, "back in 1918," said the chief, when he waved to their dressing rooms several youthful sirens from the rock upon which they sought to charm into somnolence the numerous Ulysses that, abounded thereby.
