A 20 TULSA WORLD SUNDAY MAY 19 1996 Woman inds Parents Can't Locate Her Own By Patti Weaver World Correspondent STILLWATER Doris Walton has helped other adopted people find their families of origin However Walton a sort of history detective has had no luck in finding her own birth parents Despite 30 years of unsuccess ful searching the 82 year old given up hope of learning the true identity of her birth mother who probably was un married and using a false name when Walton was adopted in 1914 is hard if your mother used a different explained Walton who also teaches geneal ogy to adults in Stillwaters Con tinuing Education Program have searched every direc tion hunting based on the name her birth mother used on her birth certificate and adoption papers Walton said see my mother would be 100 years old now it would be just said Walton who wants to know the identity of her birth parents regardless She was born in an Oklahoma City hospital she suspects was for unwed mothers It disappeared from the telephone books around 1928 she said She was 6 months old when she was aooptea Lincoln county in October of 1914 almost seven' years after statehood when adop tion records sealed had a copy of her adoption papers since the 1940s but she now sus pects that her birth mother used a false name Her birth mother signed her name twice on the document The second time at the bottom while writing her last name "She start ed to make a then crossed it out and put a over Walton said though I haven't found (my parents) I try to give (other adopted people) encouragement I can advise them where to look the only thing you can tell someone to find their original parents is go to the courthouse and get a court order from a judge to obtain a copy of your original birth certificate the judge will want to know what the adoptive parents think of this My parents were gone when I got a court order to get my birth Then the search for family his tory involves looking at such things as and places births marriages deaths wills land records census records books already written on your family she said Walton a past president of the Payne County Genealogical Soci ety spends much of her day por ing over records She is so well known to Stillwa ter librarians that they often re fer calls for family research to her charge anything for anything I do for anyone Just the last few years devoted time to helping other people 25 or so adopted people search for their original families lot of times already learned who their parents were and are searching for grandpar ents and other such as the case of the out of state man she helped find his grandparents is a kind of loneliness to being adopted you have a feel ing there is somebody you should know and you find she said She is extremely protective of the people she helps as well as the identity of her own adoptive parents even though they arenow deceased i Walton admits that a few years ago she helped a young out of state woman whose birth mother came from a prominent family in Stillwater girl knew her name and had corresponded with her She just wanted to know what her mother looked like her mother send her a pic ture Her mother where their child is and how the child is School Official Is Linked To Missing Lunch Money By Brenda Kilby World Correspondent ROGERS Ark A school offi cial suspected of stealing more than $10000 in school lunch reve nue from the Rogers district was charged with theft of property on riday Rebecca McCutcheon 40 of Rogers was arrested on Thurs day at Rogers High School after she allegedly was seen taking money from a box that contained school lunch money At a hearing riday McCutch eon was released on $5000 bail from the Benton County Jail in Bentonville where she had spent the night She is being repre sented by her attorney WH Tay lor of ayetteville McCutcheon was hired in 1986 as food service director and was responsible for the food programs at all schools in the district School district officials con tacted police on April 28 and said they suspected McCutcheon of taking money from the cash box or several days she was watched by an undercover police officer cording to the charge against McCutcheon David Cauldwell business manager for the Rogers School District said Saturday that the annual budget for the food ser vice arm is approximately $23 million The student meal budget takes up $118 million of that to tal Approximately 7500 student meals are served daily in the dis trict Payment comes mostly in the form of checks but a portion of the funds is received as cash Cauldwell said is cash handled primar ily at the secondary he said Cauldwell said accounts can be traced to determine how much money should be deposited in a given period of time However he said he could not comment on the specific case involving McCutch eon She is set to be arraigned on a felony charge of theft of property at 9 am June 24 in Benton Coun ty Circuit Court If convicted McCutcheon
