4:30 p. m. Afterschool Special. "Rookie of the Year." (Repeat). Highly recommended show for the youngsters, full of dramatic appeal, and especially timely.

It tells the story of an 11-year-old girl whose athletic prowess wins her a place on her school's all-boys' baseball team, the first time a girl ever made it. The girl, beautifully played by Jodie Foster holds your attention throughout as she's plunged into a controversy involving not only her teammates but their parents as well. 8:00 p. m. T3J Bill Movers' Journal.

"Stuart Mace." In this energy-crisis time with automobiles lining up for gas, Mr. Moyers' visit to naturalist philosopher Stuart Mace's mountain home near Aspen, Colorado, filmed by the youthful filmmaker Wayne Ewing, whom he took along, provides an extraordinary contrast in life styles, that hardy viewers may envy. 8:30 p. m. Wednesday Movie of the Week.

"The Morning After." (1974). A shocker about alcoholism that benefits from an honest approach to the subject and well defined characters. Dick Van Dyke is very good as Charlie Lester, the seemingly happy-go-lucky public relations man, who won't admit he has a drinking problem until it all but destroys him and the ones he loves. Lynn Carlin is touching as Charlie's wife, who watches her husband climb into the bottle for keeps. A disturbing uncompromising film about the nightmarish world of alcoholism.

8:30 p. m. (TJ Theater In America. "Antigone." (Repeat). Powerful, demanding and dramatically exciting evening in the theater.

In performance, it breathes a contemporary feel into the ancient Greek classic by Sophocles, as playwright Jean Anouilh, who adapted it, intended. Introduced by Stacy Keach playing the Greek chorus in a quiet, yet intense conversational tone, he sets the stage for the tragedy to come following King Creon's order that the body of Antigone's brother must lie on the ground unburied for the vultues to dispose of. The rest of the play is a battle between young Antigone, pure in heart and strong in courage, and her uncle King Creon, cultivated and analytical, but tyrannical in his love for power. Genevieve Bujold and P'ritz Weaver are simply magnificent as the play's antagonists, Antigone and Creon. 9:00 p.m.

TTJ -Wednesday Night at the Movies. "The Great Escape." (1963). Part II. (Repeat). Those of you who watched the first half Monday night, won't want to miss the conclusion of this high quality suspense epic.

Amid some pulse-pounding action and tension, the escape plan is executed. Watch for Steve McQueen's mad motorcycle dash for safely, one of the most hair-raising action sequences ever filmed. i i lit mi uti ii i in if uti ii it 1 1 1 1 ii ii ri 1 1 1 ni 1 1 tf 1 1 in 1 1 1 1 i 1 1 1 KDKA (CBS)-Pittsburgh WTAE (ABC)-Pittsburgh (TT) WIIC (NBC) -Pittsburgh (H) WQED (PBS)-Pittsburgh S3 WPGH (Independent) Pittsburgh WJAC (NBC-ABC) Johnstown fj) WTRF (NBC-ABC) Wheeling WSTV (ABC-CBS) Steubenville WTAJ (CBS) Altoona Black and white 6 A. 18 at 4 p. m. TWO NEW series made their debut on CBS within the past few days. One is the new Bud Yorkin-Norman Lear "Good Times," a spin-off from "Maude," which airs Fridays from 8:30 to 9 p. m.

The other is "Apple's Way," a one-hour series on Sunday nights at 7:30, which was created by Earl Hamner. In the premiere the all-black "Good Times" cast, headed by Esther Rolle, formerly the maid on "Maude," handled a well-written script with great skill. The setting is a Chicago housing project and the family breadwinner, played by "Maude" alumnus John Amos, wages a constant fight against unemployment. In this battle he is joined by his wife, Miss Rolle, his 11 and 17-year-old sons and his 16-year-old daughter. In remarkably short order all of these characters were introduced and sprang engagingly to life.

I felt as if I'd known them for years. RALPH CARTER plays the younger son; Bern Nadette appears as the daughter; and Jimmie Walker came perilously and hilariously close to stealing the show with his characterization of the older brother, whose facility for "finding things" on trips to the supermarket is obviously a source of constant distress for his God-fearing mother. The major achievement of this comedy is its sympathetic presentation of family life. If the ghetto setting seemed at times a mite too prosperous, Miss Rolle and Amos are obviously the kind of parents who would make the very best of whatever they have. For me, at least, this quality made the whole thing believable.

There appears to be small doubt that Little Washington's Yorkin and his partner in Tandem Productions Lear have kept their string of hit series intact. THERE WAS an appealing quality about "Apple's Way" which is difficult to define in the face of the asinine script provided for the opener. The idea of a 40-year-old architect taking his family from Los Angeles to the small Iowa town where he was born to establish a new and better life is certainly valid. But attractive as the family members are, especially the four children, we'll have to wait for at least another outing to pass judgment on this series. her debut as a "live" stage entertainer, and began a new dimension in her career.

"I want the audience to listen as well as look," she says of her special, "and this time I believe they will." One highlight of the program is a monologue in which Miss Welch reviews her life and debunks much of the gos-s i that has followed her throughout her career. In a lighthearted, intimate "conversation" with the audience, she offers rebuttal to some of the Raquel Welch myths. On "overnight stardom," example, she says: "When I was about seven, I was producer director, writer and star of plays done in my garage. I once i 'South playing every part, including the entire U.S. Navy." On being "born sexy," she says: "I remember my first interviews for acting jobs.

I had this one suit. It was seersucker, two-piece, with a very sexy Peter Pan collar topped off by a plastic carnation." resignation lo HIM personally!"
