outpointed the American Jetro Cason at the Royal Albert Hall London last night will have his next contest at Belle Vue i BEN STACK ODDS-ON ROMPS IT JJACING was resumed at Leopardstown this afternoon under overcast and showery Irish skies and with an appropriately-named first race winner 40th minute SPURS DEFENCE LET IN HARRIS hopes of having a clear pitch 1 for the start of their third round FA Cup-tie against Burnley at White Hart Lane this afternoon were dashed when light snow turned to a heavy fall half-an-hour before the start chairman of the British Boxing Board of Control last night Mr Fane is going to Paris next week and the European Boxing Union authorities are bound to raise this question mind where the fight is here or Itaily I am hoping to speak to the Italians sometime Manchester on February 25 Both Charnley and the promoter Mr Hanry Levene hope that it willl be a title fight against Maurice Cullen the Durham lightweight If that project falls through it will be against a leading American Charnley has agreed to defend his British title against Cullen on that date and Mr Levene has offered the Dunham boxer a four-figure sum to take the fight Mr Levene added: But at the moment Cullen wants the contest to go to purse offers I am surprised at this because if it does the offer may not be as high as the substantial one I have DRAWN-OUT AFFAIR Mr Arthur Boggis manager said: It would be a pity if Cullen insists on the fight going out to purse offers for it would mean a fairly long drawn-out Mr Boggis said that Charnley wants to keep busy and if Cullen did not want the fight he would still go ahead with his plans He added: Dave is anxious to defend his European title against the Italian Giordano Campari as soon as possible I talked over the matter with Philadelphia turns a snarling look of menace on the speed ball as he plies his busy fists But despite his energetic training he was outpointed by Dave Charnley lightweight champion last night The line markings were obliterated and the referee Mr Langdale (Co Durham) ordered a squad of ground staff men to sweep both sides of the lines and so leave the original markings standing out in relief against the colour of the pitch Just before the start with snow still sweeping the ground backed by an icy north-east wind there were barely 15000 spectators Burnley made a change just before the kick-off Jimmy Robson came in at inside-right in place of Ray Pointer who withdrew with a strained groin It was decided not to risk Pointer on the hard surface Tottenham Brown Baker Henry Smith Norman Mackay (capt) Jones White Smith Greaves Dyson Burnley Blacklaw Angus Elder Adamson (capt) Talbut Miller Connelly Robson Lockhead Mcllroy Harris Spurs eventually favoured Hat-soled footwear The snow ceased just before the kick-off when the crowd had increased to nearly 27000 Both goalkeepers wore track-suit trousers A flurry of snow biew off the pitch into Spurs' faces as they attacked but Talbut Angus and Elder threw them back with quick inter-passing Keeping a secure foothold was a matter of luck and pluck Gloves worn Greaves with a plaster cast on his injured right wrist and Bobby Smith were both foiled in another Tottenham onslaught Greaves and several of his team-mates wore gloves Adamson coolly marshalled his defence against the lively Spurs and neither set of forwards mastered the nasty conditions sufficiently to produce even one shot in the first ten minutes The crowd roared when burly centre-forward Bobby Smith was sent flying into touch by an over-vigorous charge Then front a free kick by Baker the Spurs centre-forward put the hall into the goalmouth It struck the underside of the bar and was scrambled away off the line with Spurs appealing for a goal The referee up with the play did not allow a score This was in the 15th minute: Clever exciting Spurs faced the and Brown the Spurs goalkeeper had trouble in kicking a third of the pitch For all the handicaps much of the football was clever and exciting Goal-scoring chances against determined defenders remained scarce though after play John Smith deputy let flv from 30 yards and was inches wide As the players became accustomed to the slippery surface more scoring opportunities were created Greaves wasted two by wild shooting but only smart goalkeeping by Brown kept but good efforts by Connelly and Robson for Burnley Loohhead was well held by Norman Burnley profited by a defensive slip and Harris scored in the 40th minute From an interception Miller swung the ball into the centre Lochhead headed it down the previous three seasons In the men's doubles event one naif of the draw followed its appointed course with the holders Major (Wilts) and A Osang (Middlesex) duly reaching the final The other half however was set alight by the progress of Beer and Wood (Combe Martin and Ilfracombe) who have only this season attained a regular place in the second team For fourth year They played a hard fast game with a very good defence and in reaching the final beat Scott and Chambers (Somerset) and Vincent IR AF) and Jones (Somerset) The latter pair were joint first seeds and all were players with several seasons of county match plav behind them Major and Osang proved too good for the Devon boys in the final but they gave a good account of themselves even here This was the fourth consecutive year that Major and Osang had won the title and the first time for many years that a Devon pair had reached the final There were also upsets in the ladies' doubles where Mrs Brandie and Miss Gerrish (Somerset and Gloucestershire) first beat the holders Mrs Corrall and Mrs Perrott and then won a close final against Miss A Brooks and Mrs Mayo (Somerset) The latter pair in their semi-final had beaten the
