To the editor, just been watching the cele- brations going on in Kabul, Afghanistan. The Taliban are cel- ebrating one year in power. But, not ev- eryone is celebrating, particularly women and girls. They have been stripped of their basic rights to educa- tion and equal status in the country. The country has become a hot bed for terrorist organi- zations, much as was and is the case in Saudi Arabia.

Once again we see the rise of the extreme right as was the case in Italy and Germany in the 1920s and If you can think that we are immune to this problem, think again. The same groundswell of extremism is alive and well in Conservative Party. If Pierre Poilievre be- comes leader of the Conservative Party next month, which would appear to be the case, we are head- ed down the road to creating our own ver- sion of the Taliban, right here at home. I call on moderate Conservatives to rise up to prevent the de- velopment of a slip- pery slope to fascism. Just as plans were laid out in his book, Mien Kampf, so too policies are there to see and take note of.

It is really true that those that ignore the lessons of history are condemned to repeat the mistakes. Moderate Conser- vatives, reclaim your party before it is too late. 9 Oops, here we go again The words we use matter To the editor, Canadian Centre for Child Protection is concerned that boys are being targeted primarily on social media giants Instagram and Snapchat as part of an on- going sextortion offender will then threaten to report the victim to police, claiming they are in posses- sion of child sexual abuse My understanding is that male victims of sex-related ha- rassment abuse are still more hesitant or unlikely than girl victims to report their of- fenders. Boys refusing to open up ask for help due to their fear of being perceived by peers, or others, as weak or non-masculine. Albeit perhaps a subcon- scious one, a mentality per- sists: Real men can take care of themselves, and boys are basically little men. noticed over many years of news media consumption that, for example, when vic- tims of sexual abuse are girls their gender is readily report- ed as such; but when boys usually referred to gender-neutrally as chil- dren. as though, as a news product made to sell the best, the child victims being female is somehow more shocking than if male.

Additionally, heard and read news media references to a 19-year- old female victim as a while (in an unrelated case) a 17-year-old male perpetrator was described as a Could it be that this is in- dicative of an already pres- ent gender bias held by the general news consumership, since news media tend to sell us what we want or are willing to consume? One might see some of that mentality reflected in, for example, a New York Times feature story, was a big hit on TikTok. Then a fan showed up with a published Feb. 19, 2022. Written by reporter Elizabeth Williamson, the piece at one point states that owned by Meta, formerly known as Facebook, accused of caus- ing mental and emotional health problems among teen- age female A couple paragraphs down, it is also stated that girls have been repeatedly targeted by child The plain fact is teen boys are also targeted by child predators. Another plain fact is that mental and emo- tional along with physical health problems are being suffered by teenage boys di- rectly due to social media use.

Revelatory of the latter is the extensive March 9, 2022, feature story headlined orexia: Obsession with muscle gain increasing among which originally appeared in the New York Times. With- out doubt, writes the author of The Highly Sensitive Man by Tom Falkenstein, societal conformity stub- bornly persists. Frank Sterle Jr. White Rock, B.C.
