OPEN EARLY 8 AM MONDAY MORNINGS TO SERVE YOU BETTER! 70 Personals 160 Appliances 220 Miscellaneous 230 Sporting Goods With the help of about seven ingredients, two local businessmen have a product many are sweetening up to. I mean who can resist a cupcake? When people come up to our booth the look on their face is price- less. They instantly said Raj Singh, Penticton franchisee owner of Big City Cupcakes located in Cherry Lane shopping centre.

heard about this business and wanted to be a part of it right And so the whirlwind began. Within two weeks of having the idea to start a franchise Singh and his long-time friend Kelly Dhaliwal, who both grew up in Penticton, were off and running. Big City Cupcakes is a concept developed by Kelowna entrepreneurs Lisa Larue, Beverley Desmarais and Debra Kelly. The idea originated from the buzz created from the television talk show hostess Oprah Winfrey. During one of her more popular show themes, listing her favourite things, she named a bakery special- izing in cupcakes only.

The Kelowna trio found out quickly that the capital to start an already established franchise was astronomical. Since Larue already had her feet firmly planted as a entre- preneur with other ventures, she decided to team up with two friends and start Big City Cupcakes. In September they opened their first bakery storefront in Kelowna and a month later opened a kiosk in Orchard Park mall. Fast forward to the beginning of December and already their first fran- chise opened in Penticton. think the thing that makes an entrepreneur suc- cessful is as simple as find- ing the right product and that is what we seem to have done.

You also have to have a quality product and ours are made from scratch every day. It is the same recipes that my grandmother used for 50 years and that I have used for the past 20 said Larue of the cupcakes that are hand made from cre- ating the batter, into putting them in the trays to bake. makes a real differ- ence. Our cupcakes are made to be eaten, not made to look Since Larue had been devising the plan for the upstart business since she saw the Oprah broadcast two years ago, it made it an even easier transition for franchise owners to get started. With the first one established in Penticton, they soon hope to be expanding to Vernon, Westbank and even Vancouver.

For the duo of Penticton entrepreneurs they indulged in the moist treat regu- larly while earning their Bachelor of Business in the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. A cupcake speciality shop in English Bay was a regular haunt for Singh while living in Vancouver and was so busy it triggered the thought to start looking into a similar venture. The recipe for success was simple. The cupcakes are pre-made in Kelowna and brought fresh daily to Penticton they come in a Big City size or a mini size in all different cake and frosting types, some even inspired by the season. The mixture of old family reci- pes with a vision of offer- ing homemade taste with the finest quality ingredients has set the cupcake makers apart from the rest.

big part of this is that these are all hand made and are fresh. When something smells and tastes so good they pretty much sell them- says Singh. And, when there are left- overs at the end of the day, the two business owners are not shy about spreading the cupcake love. grew up here and love this community so anything that we can do to give back we will. We have taken cupcakes to the hos- pital, outreach groups, the SPCA and even the RCMP and firefighters have been said Singh, not- ing that they would even like to set up a scholarship for local students.

Random lucky Penticton residents and businesses will be the recipients of free samples just for being in the right spot at the right time, or, what is known as getting cupcaked. And is something they hope will soon become a common phrase in Penticton.
